2 This presentation will enable participants to identify and understand the characteristics and traits of the four generations currently in the workforce Course Overview & Expected Outcome The concepts discussed will allow payroll management and payroll staff to effectively work with others to achieve goals; develop and maintain relationships with others; and adjust approaches to suit different people and situations In addition, participants will be taught to respond appropriately to the needs, feelings and capabilities of others along with best strategies to achieve maximum productivity from members of each generation

4 Generations Traditionalists Born before 1945 The GREAT Generation which built America Influenced by Great Depression and Two World Wars During this Era, Most families moved to the Suburbs

5 Generations Traditionalists Profile o Outlook: Practical, Optimistic o Work Ethic: Hard Working and Dedicated Work Preferences o Created Union Movement o Satisfaction for a job well done vs needing meaning in their jobs o Uncomfortable with, but adapted to Technology

6 Traditionalists are: o Dependable o Loyal o Wise Generations Traditionalists Managers should: o Keep them engaged and productive o Recognition their efforts o Get to know them and earn their trust o Respect their experiences Generally do not respond well to: o Disrespect o Profanity/Slang o Disorganization

7 Preferred Methods for Learning: o Classroom learning o On the Job Training, handled with sensitivity to experience and age o Printed Book for study Generations Traditionalists Motivators To Learn: o Respect Authority o Appreciate Consistency, Logic and Discipline

20 Susan who is 39 yo and was recently promoted to Payroll Manager works in a one person Payroll Dept for a small Doctor s Office Susan has a small child and needs to be home with her on holidays since the daycare she uses is closed What Would You Do? Due to critical payroll processing deadlines, Susan usually has to work on most holidays

21 Tracy was born in the 1970 s and is a sharp Payroll Analyst working for Electric Company Tracy is dedicated to the Payroll Department but has a very long commute and would like a more flexible work schedule What Would You Do?

23 Generations Gen Y Profile o Outlook: Hopeful o Work Ethic: Ambitious Work Preferences o Teamwork ethic and can do attitudes o Education System has prepared them well for the workforce

24 Gen Yers are: o Tenacious o Technologically savvy o Teamwork Oriented Generations Gen Y Managers should: o Send them plenty of motivating messages o Make sure to gender blend o Assign them to a credible and seasoned Mentor Generally do not respond well to: o Sarcasm o Unfairness o Condescension

25 Generations Gen Y Preferred Methods for Learning: o Collaborative learning environments with peer interaction o Thrive on reinforcement and reaffirmation o Like it short and sweet o Expect Technology to be used Motivators To Learn: o If a direct benefit is clear, motivation will be high o Education is a direct link to advancing careers and making more money

26 Jason who is a 19 yo College Freshman is interning for the Payroll Dept at Sam s Bookstore during the Summer months Jason comes to work on time each day, completes all his work assignments but enjoys listening to loud music which may be distracting to others What Would You Do?

XYZ Inc. has doubled in size over the last year and is tasking the Payroll Team to automate any manual payroll processes
