The association is seeking a dynamic and driven individual able to think critically and support a seasoned President (Chief Staff Officer) in implementing key MTA programs. About the Minnesota Trucking Association Since 1932, the Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) has been a powerful voice for the trucking industry with more than 675 member companies. With a thirty-two member Board of Directors and staff of six, MTA continues to influence policy, support education, and advance the success of Minnesota's trucking industry. MTA is committed to developing innovative and research-based policies that promote highway safety, educating policymakers and the public about the essential role that trucking plays in the economy, and promoting responsible policies that advance the trucking industry's environmental goals. Position Description MTA is eager to identify a dynamic individual who is prepared to lead MTA staff and support the President in leading MTA into the future. The successful candidate will assist the President in the execution of the organization s mission and strategic objectives. He or she will have primary responsibilities for overseeing MTA s support staff, retaining and recruiting members, overseeing MTA s outgoing communications and publications, ensuring successful execution of meetings and events, and managing the Political Action Committee. This is a full-time position and reports to the President. The successful candidate must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills able to foster understanding, facilitate decision-making, and guide and develop a young staff of talented individuals. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Under the direction of the President, the Managing Director has the following duties and responsibilities outlined below, as well as all other duties as assigned: Board/President Support In partnership with the President and Board of Directors execute MTA s strategic plan and where appropriate implement new processes and approaches to achieve it 2

3 Lead a collaborative process with the President, Board of Directors and its committees, executing decisions effectively and ensuring that the President, Board of Directors and its committees are informed of critical developments in a timely and effective manner. Assist President with development of the strategic plan as requested Administration/Operations Assist the President in monthly review of financial statements and budget monitoring Lead, motivate, manage and develop a team of five staff; direct oversight of MTA s Manager of Member Services, Manager of Education and Events, Manager of Marketing Communications and Administrative Assistant. Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence and support an open-door policy among all staff Execute all other reasonable duties as assigned by the President Provide leadership and direction to management to ensure organizational compliance Develop update and maintain a dashboard for the President to monitor the operations of the organization Government Affairs Create and maintain a current member/legislator database At the direction of the President, coordinate in-district visits with policy makers and members Implement fundraising initiatives as directed by the President Create and distribute periodic donor updates as directed Manage the daily operations of the Political Action Committee including accurate reporting Membership Recruitment and Retention Develop and manage a program for recruiting new members into the organization Actively sell MTA membership, products, services and educational opportunities Track and report all sales activity against key targets set by the President In conjunction with the Manager of Member Services, develop and manage a program for retaining members Conduct periodic member group meetings across the state Conduct regular face-to-face visits at member facilities to determine needs and concerns Serve as liaison to all member organizations and perspective member organizations Maintain robust and regular communications with members to enhance their participation and experience Serve as staff lead on designated membership committees and task forces Respond to member inquiries for information and assistance, including regulatory compliance support Assist in delivery of general MTA programming, including staffing MTA functions Foster high level of member involvement in organization programs and initiatives 3

4 Education Oversee Manager of Education and Events in assessing member education and training needs Oversee Manager of Education and Events in developing relevant educational content for: o Safety Conference o Trucking Management Conference o Annual Conference o Other educational offerings as identified Communications and Publications Source content for Trucking Minnesota and Weekly Dispatch Oversee Manager of Marketing Communications in development of MTA publications Direct Manager of Marketing Communications in development of a communications schedule including social media outreach, member communications, Web updates, etc. Business Development/Endorsed Programs Oversee and grow the organization s year-long sponsorship program Manage and grow the organization s portfolio of partnership endorsements and programs Develop and manage related for-profit subsidiaries Managing Director Profile The ideal candidate for this position will be a confident, analytical thinker and self-starter able to partner with the President in achievement of MTA s goals and objectives through innovative thinking and inspiring leadership. She or he must demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for MTA s mission and bring a variety of experiences and attributes to the association including: Excellent communication skills including the ability to articulate the value of MTA to its members and stakeholders Ability to build and cultivate strong relationships with members, staff, volunteers and key stakeholders Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with the President, Board, staff and stakeholders Excellent managerial ability to cultivate, motivate, empower and guide a team of five staff members Ability to execute and implement an annual work plan to achieve the association s goals and objectives as directed by the President and Board Respectful, honest, transparent, and ethical management style Entrepreneurial, innovative and critical thinking ability Able to manage all aspects of financial operations, including sound budgeting, cash flow, recordkeeping, reporting, audits, accounts and all other activities to maintain financial integrity Ability to adapt to changing work environments, work priorities and organizational needs 4

5 Qualifications Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include: Required: Bachelor s degree or higher Trade, professional or other membership organization experience Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven and self-directed Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people Ability to think strategically and analytically, synthesize complex issues and information, and manage change Demonstrated administrative and supervisory skills and experience Demonstrated effectiveness and experience in building partnerships Demonstrated commitment to MTA s mission and the value of its members Preferred: Advanced degree, MPA, MBA or similar Minimum of 5 years of management experience Working knowledge of the trucking industry Experience managing a team of 5+ Successful track record in securing sponsorships and grants, and in building partnerships with sponsors and industry contacts Financial management in a nonprofit organization, including budget preparation and implementation Has perviously served in a similar role (Assistant Executive Director, Managing Director, Deputy Director, etc.) Demonstrated success in growing membership Experience in corporate development A record in growing organizations from a revenue and value perspective Proven track record working with a Board or Directors Legal knowledge and/or experience Application Send cover letter, resume and salary requirements by July 29th to the Stacey Barnes at recruitment@associationoptions.com.
