4 Excerpt from WKU s Action Plan OBJECTIVE 1.5 PREPARE STUDENTS FOR LIFELONG LEARNING AND SUCCESS. Strategies Enhance retention/placement initiatives at baccalaureate level Expand leadership training and development opportunities for students

5 Option #1: Student Employment More than three-quarters of college students today are employed while taking classes. Many of these students work at campus jobs. Institutions employing students on campus realize multiple benefits: On-campus employment can be an effective way to engage students in campus life and increase their sense of identity with the institution. Students who work perform better academically than their nonworking peers. Campus jobs help prepare students for their post-collegiate career. With tight budgets, employing student workers can help leverage resources.

6 Student Employment Examples Review Job Descriptions and Complete Salary Surveys Complete job audits with departments Provide guidance in development of job specifications and descriptions Complete research on benefit comparisons and other HR needs Research new technology solutions Develop communication skills and tools for assisting employee benefits communications Offer unique perspectives on social media usage Develop and Conduct Staff Training Programs Enter information into databases Participate in workplace investigations for accidents/injuries Plan and organize events

7 Option #2: Internships Paid or unpaid internships are mutually beneficial to the student and the institution: For the student: Building a network and gaining resources could pay dividends later Great opportunity to build on classroom learning Enhances a resume and adds credibility in an interview (ability to speak on more than what is learned in a classroom) For the employer: Inexpensive recruiting tool Opportunity to evaluate prospective employees Interns bring current technology and ideas from the classroom to the workplace Excellent resource for short-term project work
