2 4. POSITION OBJECTIVES The Lawyer - Policy & Advocacy reports directly to the General Manager Advocacy. The position provides support to the General Manager Advocacy within the Advocacy team. The position is expected to commit to the Purpose, Values and Commitment to our Members of the Society. 5. KEY REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION Skills, Knowledge & Experience Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated good interpersonal skills. Post admission experience as a legal practitioner. (Current practising certificate not required). KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Project Policy Work Undertake projects and research and work with Society Committees relating to policy and professional issues affecting the Law Society of Western Australia and the legal profession in Western Australia. Prepare draft submissions, reports and position papers on a broad range of legal issues and law reform initiatives for consideration by Committees or Working Groups and Council Professional Conduct Provide assistance to members of the legal profession with enquiries regarding professional conduct, ethical and practice issues. 2

3 Assist the General Manager Advocacy in dealing with complaints about legal practitioners received from members of the public. Committees and Working Groups Manage a dedicated number of Committees or Working Groups of the Society as required and assist the General Manager Advocacy with administrative matters. General Responsibilities Assist the General Manager Advocacy in reviewing and reporting as required to Law Society Council, Executive and Chief Executive Officer, on emerging statutory and policy issues or required responses to requests for comment. Assist as required in the review of Friday Facts, Government Gazettes and State Administrative Tribunal Decisions, and other publications to identify issues or changes to legislation or regulations which may be of interest to the Society or its members. Assist the General Manager Advocacy to administer the Society s Council and Committee Standing Orders ensure that they are regularly reviewed, maintained and kept up to date. Assist the General Manager Advocacy manage the biennial review of Committee memberships. Assist the General Manager Advocacy with other professional and administrative duties as required. 7. 4 Liaison: Internal: General Manager Advocacy Chief Executive Officer General Managers Other service team staff President Councillors Committee members External: Society Members Government Agencies Community Organisations Contractors Other Service Providers Liaise with Auditors if required In accordance with Council Policy AP03.06 Leave part 8.1 Leave in Lieu, Leave in Lieu is not available for senior members or employees on salaries in excess of $65,000 or pro rata thereof. 8. EXTENT OF AUTHORITY Operates under the direction of the General Manager Advocacy for meeting established performance objectives. Accountable for ensuring all work is carried out to a high standard within the required deadlines. Works within established guidelines, policies and procedures of the Law Society as well as legislation relevant to the operations of the Law Society. 4

5 9. SELECTION CRITERIA Post admission experience as a legal practitioner. (Current practising certificate not required). Demonstrated research and report writing skills. Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated analytical skills. Competent in the use of Microsoft Office suite. Competent typing skills and developed time and personal management skills. Demonstrated achievements in implementing quality customer service practices in a team environment. A commitment to the objectives of the Law Society, including a commitment to promoting access to justice and the interests of the legal profession. 10. ANNUAL REVIEW At least once in each calendar year the General Manager Advocacy will conduct an evaluation of the Employee s performance.
