1 Post: Financial Controller Responsible to: Chief Financial Officer Responsible for: Finance Team Purpose To deliver timely and accurate financial operations, review and reporting, maintain/develop financial controls, monitor risk and liquidity, ensure proper financial planning and monitoring against key performance indicators. To lead the finance function ensuring it is efficient, proactive and a value driver within the charity. To lead, guide and develop the finance team. To be a senior financial resource for the charity and succession planning for CFO role. Key contacts/relationships External contacts: Board of Trustees, Auditors, Regulatory bodies, investment managers, bankers, HMRC. Internal contacts: CFO, SMT, finance team, fundraising teams, research team, data team Key responsibilities/accountabilities 1. Ensure all cash receipts/disbursements are controlled and monitored, including direct debits, standing orders, Gift Aid claims and supplier payments; documentation and improvement of related processes and procedures 2. Prepare monthly management accounts, including comparison with budget, and analytical review for review by CFO within 2 working days of month ends 3. Prepare quarterly interim re-forecasts for each financial year for review by CFO 4. Prepare annual accounts, note disclosure and drafts of directors report for review by CFO; liaison with auditors Page 1 of 5

2 5. With support of CFO and SMT, prepare annual budget for review by CFO 6. Prepare and monitor short and long-term cash flow forecasts & financial KPIs; alert CFO to cash withdrawal requirements for investment portfolio 7. Review contracts and undertake financial due diligence on new suppliers; ensure proper procurement procedures for major contracts 8. Assist CFO and SMT with financial analysis for projects and on an ad hoc basis 9. Monitor, strengthen and/or implement financial controls as appropriate; undertake organisational risk assessments and document results 10. Maintain Sage accounting package; back-ups, upgrades, chart of accounts, year-end roll forward, training/technical knowledge etc. Make recommendations for improvements in accounting processes and systems. 11. Manage Finance Team, ensuring regular communication/1:1s, performance reviews (PDR), providing guidance, motivation and opportunities for learning and development 12. Liaison with fundraising, data and research teams and preparation of requested financial information, including monitoring and reconciliation of restricted/designated funds 13. Payroll, pension and other compensation; management and oversight 14. Deputise for CFO as necessary 15. Undertake any other duties that fall within the scope of the post as allocated by the CFO. Person specification Requirements Essential Desirable Educational attainment Experience required Professional accounting qualification Significant experience in a senior financial role High technical proficiency in accounting Confidence in communicating with key stakeholders Managing own workload and conflicting priorities to meet required standards and goals. Developing and implementing operational plans. Ability to think strategically and broadly Working within a not-for-profit organisation. Knowledge of charity accounting and FRS102 IT experience Skills and aptitudes required Managing and developing teams Ability to analyse accounting or legislative pronouncements and relate these to organisational practices and solutions. Highly computer literate. Proficient in the use of MS office software, especially MS Word and and advanced Excel skills. Enthusiastic with a high degree of flexibility. Excellent analytical and numerical skills with the ability to develop, monitor and evaluate financial data and operational plans.
