Good leaders influence organisational culture, sustain quality and support teams to deliver the highest standards of care. Good leadership changes people s lives. Good leadership in Health and Social Care is the foundation for the sustainment of safe, effective and compassionate services for the most vulnerable people in our communities. It enables staff teams to deliver support and care in person centred ways. Acting as role models and embracing the daily challenges of complex and diverse situations, they set the pace and culture for the organisations they represent. When we ask whether a service is well-led, we find out if the leadership, management and governance of the organisation assures the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care, supports learning and innovation, and promotes an open and fair culture. The State of Adult Social Care Services 2014 / 2017 CQC High-quality care that we would be happy for anyone we love, or ourselves, to receive. Over three-quarters (77%) of adult social care services are good. These are services with leaders who inspire a positive culture focused on providing person-centred care treating people as people and not just as recipients of care. These leaders motivate, develop and value their staff who work tirelessly and skilfully to support people to live their lives to the full, with dignity and respect. The lives of people using adult social care can be transformed or their final days remembered for the care and compassion they and their families and carers experienced. At registered manager level strong leadership was characterised by individuals with an innovative, outward or forward looking approach who were open to feedback and actively sought out best practice to steer improvement. 12 Skills for Care related resources Leadership Qualities Framework The Leadership Qualities Framework (LQF) describes the attitudes and behaviours needed for high quality leadership at all levels across the social care workforce. It focuses on the values and behaviours that provide the foundations for effective leadership in social care. It can be used: by individuals to review and reflect on their performance as a leader to support recruitment and selection to leadership and management roles to inform the design of staff development and leadership learning programmes to review individual, team and organisational development and performance. Manager Induction Standards / Becoming a Manager workbook The Manager Induction Standards set out what a manager needs to know and understand to perform well in their role. They are a versatile tool (supported by a practical workbook) aimed at: new managers - those new to management and those new in post who have previously managed other care services existing managers - to use as a benchmark of their own practice and potential learning and development needs, especially if their role has changed over the years aspiring managers - to plan an appropriate development programme, increase their understanding of the expectations of a manager role and increase their potential of securing management positions in the future. Greater resilience, better care The Greater resilience, better care resource will help managers and the workforce look at their stress levels and overall wellbeing, and what they might do to improve things, so that they can focus on the job of caring for those who need support. The resource is for everyone and offers practical advice and exercises on how to build your resilience and cope with stress. Registered manager networks Peer to peer support is available from 150+ registered manager networks in operation across England. The networks are led by registered managers who ensure the topics discussed at meetings are always relevant to those attending.
