8 TRAINEESHIP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is a Traineeship? A traineeship, also known as an Australian Apprenticeship, is a way for a person to be trained in an accredited qualification whilst being employed full time, part time or under a school-based apprenticeship. A traineeship allows Trainees to earn whilst they learn and apply their knowledge in the context of their workplace. The traineeship is bound by a training contract between the Employer and the Trainee. As such, there are a number of responsibilities that both parties must adhere to during the nominal term of the contract. As a Pre-qualified Supplier in approved courses, Australis College is able to offer traineeships to eligible Queensland residents/workers. What are the Trainee and Employer responsibilities with a traineeship? The Apprenticeship Info website has information sheets that detail the responsibilities of the Trainee and the Employer. Employer: apprenticeshipsinfo/information-resources/ information-sheets/atis-013 Trainee: apprenticeshipsinfo/information-resources/ information-sheets/atis-003 Supervision requirements The person responsible for supervising the Trainee must also meet supervision requirements. This entails holding the qualification that the Trainee is enrolling into, or being able to demonstrate that they have the equivalent skills and knowledge. The Supervisor may be required to undertake a a competency mapping process with the College and provide evidence such as certification or work experience such as a resume and position description or go through a Recognition of Prior Learning process with the College. How do I find a traineeship? The Queensland online portal, Skills Gateway qld.gov.au/, is the best source to find a qualification available under a traineeship, or to find a Registered Training Organisaation (RTO). Alternatively, an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) can be contacted.

9 TRAINEESHIP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network? An AASN is contracted by the Australian Government to offer free support services to Trainees. They are not a party to the training contract, however they facilitate the registration of the training contract and any variations that may impact upon it. A local AASN can be located using the following search tool australianapprenticeships.gov.au/find-myaasn/full-list. How long does the traineeship last? Each qualification under a traineeship will have its own nominal term. This nominal term is outlined on the Queensland Training Information Service (QTIS) training.qld.gov.au/traineeship. The nominal terms listed against each qualification are for full time enrolments. Those enrolling under a part time or school-based arrangement will have double the nominal term to complete their training. How often does the Trainee attend training? This will be determined on an individual Trainee basis with each workplace. Every workplace must release trainees from normal work activities to participate in training and assessment. When completing the Traineeship Agreement and Handbook, the College will discuss and document agreed days and hours for the Trainee to be released from work. What does a Trainee get paid? Employers are to pay Trainees in accordance with pay requirements set out by the Fair Work Ombudsman. For more information, please visit fairwork.gov.au/pay/minimum-wages/ apprentice-and-trainee-pay-rates. Are there any costs involved with a traineeship? Fees are involved with full time and part time traineeships. These fees may be charged to the Trainee and/or the Employer as a contribution fee. Trainees that are under a school-based traineeship do not incur contribution fees. What is an Employer Contribution fee? In some instances, the College may choose to charge an Employer contribution fee where there is a significant cost to the College such as travelling to regional areas, a request for more frequent workplace visits or additional resources. This will be disclosed during the induction process if this applies. A re-assessment fee is charged to the Employer should the Trainee not demonstrate competence in a unit of competency following two assessment submission attempts. What is a Student (Trainee) Contribution fee? Student Contribution fees are the nongovernment financial contribution to the cost of training and assessment. These are calculated at $1.60 per nominal hour for each unit of competency within a traineeship qualification. There are exemptions to these fees if a Trainee meets certain criteria and can provide supporting evidence. A partial exemption is calculated at $1.60 per nominal hour times 40% for each unit of competency. A full exemption does not require a fee to be charged. For more information regarding the Student Contribution fees and criteria for exemptions go to the User Choice tab on the follwing page of our website: Is there an eligibility criteria to enrol into a traineeship? Trainees must be able to supply one form of evidence for each eligibility criteria of: Citizenship. Date of Birth. Permanent residency. Eligibility of concession (if applicable). User Choice eligibility criteria may also apply. Employers can discuss individual Trainee eligibility with their AASN. For more information about the User Choice program visit: gov.au/training/incentives/userchoice.
