2 INTRODUCTION Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is an important management tool for ensuring optimal use of natural resources for sustainable development. A beginning in this direction was made in our country with the impact assessment of river valley projects in and the scope has subsequently been enhanced to cover other developmental sectors such as industries, thermal power projects, mining schemes etc. To facilitate collection of environmental data and preparation of management plans, guidelines have been evolved and circulated to the concerned Central and State Government Departments. EIA has now been made mandatory under the Environmental (Protection Act, 1986 for 29 categories of developmental activities involving investments of Rs. 50 crores and above. OBJECTIVE To create better understating about EIA Law govern by MoEF & CC Appreciate the purpose and role of EIA in the decision-making process Understand strengths & limitations of environmental management Plan Know procedures Understand screening & scoping processes Interpret options for evaluating environmental and social impacts Know formats of EIA Report (Environmental Impact Statement, or Environmental Statement) Understand the purpose of developing follow-up procedures, and options for designing these procedures. Target Group The course will be helpful to the planning and management professionals, persons working in development projects in public or private sector, academicians, engineers, planners, biologists, geographers, architects, archeologists, environmental consultants, self employed practitioners, NGOs working in environmental sectors, relevant Government departments, journalists, science/ engineering graduates and post graduates.
