1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Service: Location: Grade: Responsible to: Responsible for: Liaison with: Job Purpose: Volunteering Manager Civic Engagement Office Docklands/Stratford/Satellite sites F Director of Civic Engagement Civic Engagement/Volunteering/Noon Coordinator Voluntary and community sector organisations, students, UEL Schools and Services To manage, develop and deliver a volunteering service which maximizes opportunities for UEL students to volunteer, which contributes to a campus culture of volunteering and community engagement and which builds partnerships with the voluntary and community sector in our sub-region. Alongside developing the volunteering offer and infrastructure, to develop and support the delivery of community engagement activities and projects to enhance UEL s engagement with its local communities and the impact our institution makes to our sub-region. Main Duties: 1. To lead and develop UEL s volunteering service and programme of engagement activities, embedding volunteering into the UEL student experience and providing, through volunteering, the opportunity for students to develop their employability skills. 2. To build relationships with UEL schools and departments to identify the most suitable opportunities for their students taking account of: sector-related preferences, opportunities for reflective learning and the provision of a range of curricular and co-curricular options. 3. To manage relationships with a diverse range of external community organisations including charities, local authorities and social enterprises. To understand their needs and identify opportunities for UEL staff and students to engage and support them. 4. To manage the marketing and comms for volunteering to students, staff and the wider community. This will involve liaising with the UEL Comms and Marketing teams as well as using a mix of social media, newsletters, website, and phone. Page 1 of 5

To ensure effective preparation processes and programmes are provided for UEL students to ensure they are fully prepared for applying to, completing and articulating the skills gained from, relevant volunteering opportunities. 6. To ensure that robust systems are established and maintained to ensure the well-being of students engaged in volunteering. This includes managing UEL s online volunteering portal, assessing suitability of opportunities registered and conducting appropriate due diligence and risk assessment. 7. To ensure the Key Performance Indicators for UEL students engaged in volunteering are met including working in partnership with Schools and Services to deliver these. To additionally support with other performance indicators including partnership development and the identification and development of partnerships for specific community engagement themes. 8. To line manage the Civic Engagement/Volunteering/Noon Centre Co-ordinator and project or temporary staff including student volunteer champions. 9. To identify good practice and trends in graduate employment to ensure that the University benefits from best practice, including proactive engagement with recognised professional associations such as Student Volunteering Network, IVR and Team London. 10. To provide expertise in volunteer management and placement providing advice to staff and students. To build and maintain a suite of policies and guides in a variety of areas associated with volunteering such as safeguarding, health and safety and international volunteering. These should align with UEL policies and good practice in the volunteering sector. 11. To propose, develop and project manage a number of volunteering or community engagement projects each year to support UEL staff and students to connect with our communities. 12. To produce relevant information, proposals, reports and presentations for UEL s senior management team, Schools, Services and external bodies. 13. To collect, evaluate and monitor relevant data and statistics to allow for strategic and operational planning and ensure the service is able to meet institutional objectives. 14. To evaluate the impact of volunteering on students employment prospects and to develop case studies and reports which demonstrate the impact of volunteering. 15. To regularly review the opportunities for external funding and to write and submit funding applications in support of our volunteering and community engagement activity and goals. 16. To chair/attend team meetings as required; attend appropriate meetings/networking events both externally and internally. Page 2 of 5

3 17. To take a flexible approach to work (attendance at early morning and evening meetings will be required along with occasional weekend work). 18. Any other duties, in line with the level of the post, and as directed by the Director of Civic Engagement. 19. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS: Degree or equivalent (C) Desirable criteria Training and development qualification or teaching qualification (C) KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: Experience of successfully negotiating and networking with a range of external organisations and solid knowledge of third and public sector practices (A/I) Experience of volunteer management and recruitment, and the drive to manage successful large scale volunteering initiatives including managing relationships, processes, volunteers and events (A/I/P) Experience of analysing data, producing reports, assessing performance against Key Performance Indicators and evaluating impact (A/I/P) Excellent IT skills: clear proficiency in Word and Excel packages, use of the internet and experience of using social media to raise the profile of an offer or service (A/I) Desirable criteria A range of contacts in the voluntary sector (A/I) COMMUNICATION: Ability to communicate using a variety of mediums to internal and external audiences including students, external organisations, UEL staff and employers and the ability to deliver engaging presentations and workshops (A/I/P) INITIATIVE AND PROBLEM SOLVING: Experience of using own initiative to resolve problems and creativity to drive development. 5 TEAMWORK & MOTIVATION: Ability to manage and motivate own and wider team to ensure institutional objectives are met by delegating appropriately, overseeing projects in a supportive manner whilst being clear about objectives and expected outcomes, giving feedback on progress in a timely and honest way and developing staff using the PDR process (A/I) PLANNING & ORGANISATION: Ability to plan for the efficient and effective delivery of the volunteering offer and your contribution to wider community engagement initiatives in order to deliver service and institutional objectives and KPIs (A/I) Experience of and the ability design and manage multiple projects effectively, ensuring projects are delivered in a timely manner from initial concept through to evaluation (A/I) DECISION MAKING: Ability to make independent but appropriate decisions that affect own team and others, whilst keeping relevant people informed and staying within budget (A/I) Other essential criteria: Commitment to and understanding of equal opportunities issues within a diverse and multicultural environment (A/I/P) Criteria tested by Key: A = Application form C = Certification I = Interview P = Presentation R = Research papers T = Test Page 5 of 5
