2 Career Orientation Inventory The Career Orientation Inventory is a tool that can help you to better understand your own personal pattern of interests and how they are related to different jobs and occupations. Your report is comprised of two sections. The first section, the Career Orientation Profile, provides a ranking of your scores on each of the six career orientation dimensions. The second section, Career Options to Consider, is a listing of the jobs and occupations that fit most closely with your pattern of career interests. The Career Orientation Inventory is based on the six personality types developed by John Holland to describe an individual's career interests. These are: Realistic (R) Artistic (A) Enterprising (E) Social (S) Conventional (C) Investigative (I) The relationships among the personality types can be seen in the hexagon above. Types directly across from each other are opposites (e.g., Realistic is the opposite of Social). Each personality type is most like those that appear on either side of it (e.g. Realistic is most like Conventional and Investigative). 2
