1 We're looking for a dynamic leader to coordinate our efforts in tenant and community engagement. CCOC is a community-based, tenant and member directed, non-profit housing organization whose mission is to create, maintain and promote housing for low and moderate income people. As the Tenant and Community Engagement Director you will be a capacity builder, motivator, and advocate for CCOC tenants and volunteers. You ll coordinate our corporate advocacy efforts in partnership with other community organizations and ensure we maintain our reputation as a loud and proud affordable housing provider. You will grow our efforts to engage volunteers that reflect the full diversity of CCOC tenants. You understand the importance of having everyone at the table, and can bridge the gap between daily issues and governance to recruit, retain, and engage volunteers. SUMMARY OF POSITION An overview of the position. The Director of the Tenant and Community Engagement Department works with tenants on issues which affect the quality of life* in CCOC properties and surrounding neighbourhoods; promotes affordable housing for low and modest income households; ensures CCOC meets its objectives to promote sustainable lifestyles; ensures the participation of tenants and members in the management of the Corporation; advises the Tenant and Community Engagement committee of the Board; and supervises Department staff. This position supports the work of Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation, Centretown Citizens Housing Co-Operative and Cahdco (Centretown Affordable Housing Development Corporation). * CCOC s strategic plan defines our contribution to quality of life as good quality buildings and homes; diversity in housing options and tenancy mix; responsive service; affordability; shared values with landlord; a voice in decision making; feeling safe at home; walkability ; personal responsibility to space and community. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Oversee tenant engagement and volunteering by: Along with Department staff, working with tenants on issues which affect the quality of life at CCOC properties and their surrounding neighbourhoods by: working with tenants to help identify quality of life priorities and how to satisfy those priorities; Page 2

3 creating mechanisms to ensure good feedback and communication between tenants, their neighbours and CCOC staff; developing methods with which to evaluate tenant experience and satisfaction, communicating findings to other departments and the Board; consulting with other departments, primarily Rental and Maintenance, with respect to quality of life issues; overseeing the planning and coordination of corporate events, such as: volunteer appreciation, property openings, neighbourhood events and the Annual General Meeting; and liaising with other community groups, agencies, and local organizations or businesses which may be beneficial to tenants or align with CCOC mission. 2. Promote affordable housing for low and modest income households, by: coordinating CCOC s advocacy efforts with sector associations and allies; creating and executing public awareness campaigns and activities; and leading media relations for the corporation, supporting designated spokespeople. 3. Ensure the Corporation meets its objectives to promote sustainable lifestyles at CCOC properties by: overseeing the work of the Sustainability Facilitator, using community-based social marketing to engage tenants in reducing their ecological footprint; overseeing CCOC gardening programs; sharing and promoting sustainability tools and resources across the affordable housing sector and among other interested community groups; and consulting and coordinating with other departments on supporting sustainability objectives, primarily Maintenance. 4. Ensure the participation of tenants and members in the management of the Corporation by: developing, overseeing and monitoring volunteer engagement strategies; recruiting members and tenants for participation in volunteer work on committees, for CCOC events and programs, or elsewhere as appropriate; actively working to bring greater diversity into CCOC decision making bodies; supporting the Nominations and Appointments Sub-Committee of the Board; and Page 3

4 encouraging the attendance of tenants, members and the community at Corporation functions. 5. Advise and support the Tenant and Community Engagement Committee of the Board, by: ensuring committee members are informed as needed to make sound decisions and recommendations to the Board; preparing regular reports to, and attending all meetings of the Tenant and Community Engagement Committee, as staff support; advising the committee on policy development, strategic planning, tenant engagement and volunteer engagement. 6. Manage the Tenant and Community Engagement Department, and hires, trains, coaches and supervises staff by: ensuring a fair distribution of work; ensuring the preparation of annual work plans; carrying out annual performance reviews; ensuring the effective integration of the Department and staff into larger corporate workflows and the organizational mission ; and reviewing material produced by staff. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE Minimum education, qualifications and experiential requirements. Post-secondary education in relevant to community organizing, community development, communications or other relevant field 5 years progressively responsible relevant experience, including at least 2 years supervising staff or volunteers Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements Frequent updating of job knowledge especially with respect to program regulations, community development, web design by regularly attending workshops, conferences, seminars and self-study Excellent oral and written ability in English and French; Valid Ontario Class G Driver s License and access to a working vehicle Demonstrated ability to: Page 4

5 Page 5 Effectively use various software including desktop publishing, graphic design and layout (Adobe Creative Suite), wordprocessing, spreadsheet, presentation, electronic mail and calendaring, WordPress, MailChimp, Survey Monkey; Solve complex problems often involving tenants, staff, community groups, sponsors by: gathering and analyzing information from a range of sources; probing for information to determine the true nature of the problem; comprehending complex or specialized materials; developing innovative solutions; Contribute to strategic planning, design program evaluation, and continuously improve processes; Dealing with competing priorities, managing unpredictable workloads, delegating to staff and coordinating a team effort; Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing to tenants, volunteers, the public at large, potential sponsors, Committees; including drafting complex documents in plain language including newsletters, reports for Committee and Board, bulletins, annual report; Lead by example, demonstrating integrity, creativity and enthusiasm in achieving results.
