Victoria in summer - it's TENNIS TIME (and try our tennis quotes quiz for a chance to win a $50 Bunnings voucher - look for the tennis balls in the text below). Just remember Creating great volunteers 3. Trademarks and logos - should you protect yours? 4. CCV Governance training for committees and boards 5. CCV International Women's Day Mulgrave Country Club 6. CCV Study Tour to AHGE - itinerary out next week 1. It's TENNIS TIME Yes it's that fortnight in Victoria - the Australian Open is in full swing, the weather has turned summery in the south, and there's a real buzz around Melbourne and the tourist centres of the State. The Australian Open boosts the State and local economies. It brings a huge influx of visitors, and although many are Melbourne-anchored, others take the opportunity to travel around our great State. Some of them will find their way to your club, so please be on the look out and make them welcome. Earlier this week Tennis Victoria hosted hundreds of volunteers for a pre-tennis breakfast. This was great event in itself, but over everything else it was a great showcase for what clubs and club members can achieve for their communities. Tennis in Victoria is BIG...it's approximately 45% of Australian tennis - Tennis Victoria has 896 affiliated organisations (clubs, associations, commercial centres and tennis schools), 113,000 registered players and more than 1300 registered coaches. In some regional areas, the local tennis club is the last

2 social meeting place remaining - the footy team has folded, the race track is closed, there's no more town library...but there are enthusiastic players and volunteers coaching kids, helping them into the game, and creating a social hub. CCV tennis quotes quiz - for a chance to win a $50 Bunnings voucher, simply tell us who made the five tennis quotes that are scattered throughout this Friday Feedback. your answers to ccv@ccv.net.au and put the words Tennis Quotes in the subject line Here's the first one: Quote A. "When you're good at something, make it everything." 2. Creating great volunteers Almost all clubs rely in part or solely on the assistance of volunteers and aren t we lucky so many people are willing to do so. Of course volunteers are not paid staff, and so are not subject to the same level of control or direction that paid might be; however that does not mean they should not receive similar training or protections. For the benefit of both parties (club and volunteer) volunteers should be provided training and taken through an induction/orientation process that is appropriate to the tasks they will undertake. CCV provides a volunteer handbook that can assist in developing a volunteer policy appropriate for your club. Tennis quote quiz: Quote B. Tennis is a perfect combination of violent action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquility 3. Trademarks and logos - should you protect yours? Recently some clubs have been considering whether to register their logo as a trademark. A trademark is used to distinguish the goods and services of one trader/ supplier from those of another. A registered trademark is enforceable legally, and gives the owner exclusive rights to use the trademark for commercial purposes for the goods and services it is registered under.

3 While many clubs may not see the commercial value in registering a trademark, it may be wise to consider what would need to be done of the club suddenly was not able to use its trademark. This could occur if another party was successful in registering an identical or similar logo or trademark and took legal action against the club to force it to desist from use of the trademark. This might affect signage, publications, stationery, website/s, uniforms of staff and players...the list goes on. There have been cases where third parties have deliberately "poached" and then registered trademarks and then taken action against the original user. While these actions may be defendable, having to do so can be a costly exercise in terms of time, money and distraction from true purpose. So, you may wish to consider your trademark, if you are using one. The process of doing this is fairly simple - simply log on to Intellectual Property Australia and follow the prompts. For a modest fee an approved trademark can be protected for 10 years. Tennis quote quiz Quote C: Everyone needs a coach.
