Whether you are participating in a job interview or meeting someone at a party, most people are genuinely interested in other people. What are you going to say? Is it easier to describe someone else than to describe yourself? Who can assist you with your response? As we work with individuals who are in the process of developing independence or seeking new employment, this is a critical question. Are we helping others describe themselves as we describe them? Perhaps a more important question is, How do you describe an individual with a disability? Articles, case studies, client descriptions, training materials, and so many written materials begin and end with descriptions of the cannot do s. Pages and pages of descriptions are often meticulously prepared with detailed information about all of the things a person is unable to do. John, Tell me about yourself. Well,.. I cannot stand for long periods of time. I cannot cook. I cannot drive a car. The ability to document all of the cannot will directly impact the services the individual receives. The more documentation, the more services.. or disservice? By 2010, 40% of the American workforce (64 million) will be eligible for retirement.. What would the consequence be if individuals described their abilities every time they were asked this question? John, Tell me about yourself. I would be glad to.. I can type 40 words per minute. I can utilize multiple computer applications. I can navigate public transportation. I can be depended upon regularly. I can do just about anything you teach me to do! Kimberly Seeger, LBLN

5 LBLN September, 2007 Page 5 About LBLN The Louisiana Business Leadership Network (LBLN) is a business-led, non-profit organization dedicated to helping Louisiana employers understand, utilize, and benefit from the valuable resource that people with disabilities represent in both the consumer and labor markets. We envision a future where... Businesses actively market their products and services to consumers with disabilities because doing so creates profit. Employers actively recruit, hire, train, advance, and support workers (with disabilities) because doing so raises productivity. Agencies and vendors (that exist to serve the employment needs of people with disabilities) recognize and respond to the fact that employer satisfaction is a fundamental service outcome that must be addressed to guarantee their success and survival. People with disabilities, once hired and properly accommodated in their jobs, are not workers with disabilities, but simply workers. To fulfill this purpose and to pursue this vision, the Louisiana Business Leadership Network will provide: Employer Consultation & Technical Assistance Training Liaison/Networking Support Research & Development Public Relations Louisiana Business Leadership Network 504 Mayflower Drive Metairie, LA Phone: Website: Larry Dale, Larry@lbln.org Kimberly Seeger, Kim@lbln.org Debbie Welch, Debbie@lbln.org
