(pro-rata) Manager Support Services Date Approved January ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT Women s Health Victoria (WHV) is a statewide not for profit organisation dedicated to improving health outcomes for women in Victoria. In addition to providing advocacy, training and health promotion, WHV also provides a number of direct women s health information services. WHV has been chosen by the Victorian Government to deliver peer to peer support groups for 12 months for women affected by transvaginal mesh surgery. Transvaginal polypropylene mesh (TV mesh) has been used to manage and treat pelvic organ prolapse in women for more than 20 years. This net like substance provides support to repair weakened or damaged internal tissue. It is intended to be permanent and for the body s own tissue to grow into the mesh. TV mesh is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (such as bladder, bowel or uterine prolapse) and stress urinary incontinence, often common after childbirth, when non-surgical treatment options have been unsuccessful. For many women, this procedure is successful. However, some women develop significant and debilitating complications following surgery or many years later. These complications include but are not limited to: Acute and chronic pain Chronic infection Incontinence (bladder and bowel) Damage to tissue (erosion) and surrounding organs (perforation) Psychological trauma. Peer Support has long been recognised as a valuable support response in many sectors. The idea that someone else has walked in similar shoes, even if their lived experience has been different, cannot be underestimated and there are often many similarities. Peer Support offers non-judgemental, empathic and authentic support. It can acknowledge the experience of others while providing emotional and practical support. Page 1 of 5
