2 2 In this module, Trustees will explore: the dis(nct responsibili(es of the board and the director of educa(on the role of the board chair the complementary roles of the board and and the director of educa(on the role of the individual trustee/ board member

3 3 Consider this: Governing well is no easy task. It takes knowledge, skill and experience. It takes courage and character. And it takes teamwork, in the sense of everyone bringing their unique talents and backgrounds to work together for the best interests of the people the Board serves. JIM BROWN

4 4 Roles: The School Board The secret to effec(veness is understanding the different roles within an organiza(on and how those roles relate The school Board governs in a manner responsive to the community acts in the interests of all learners advocates ac(vely for students promotes confidence in publicly funded educa(on

5 5 The District School Board: Job Description Accountability to the students in the District, Provincial Government and the community Policy Development, Implementa(on and Evalua(on Planning Director/District School Board rela(ons Fiscal Responsibility Board Development Poli(cal Advocacy and Communica(on Recogni(on

6 6 Responsibilities The District School Board: Promotes student achievement and well- being Ensures effec(ve stewardship of the Board s resources Delivers effec(ve and appropriate educa(on programs to its pupils Develops and maintains policies and organiza(onal structures Monitors and evaluates the effec(veness of policies Develops and annually reviews a mul(- year plan Monitors and evaluates the performance of the Board s director

7 7 Roles: The Trustee The Trustee: is a member of a team the board of trustees First Na(on trustees appointed to the board are considered elected members of the board Par(cipates in decision making as a member of the board but has no individual authority to make decisions on behalf of the board Par(cipates in policy- making and strategic planning Balances the governance and cons(tuency roles, bringing the concerns of parents, students and supporters to the Board

8 8 Responsibilities of Individual Trustees Entrust the day- to- day management of the Board to its staff through the director Maintain focus on student achievement and well- being Comply with the Board s code of conduct Carry out responsibili(es in a manner that assists the Board in fulfilling its du(es AXend and par(cipate Board and commixee mee(ngs Consult with parents, students and supporters on mul(- year plan Bring parents, students and supporters concerns to the Board Uphold the implementa(on of Board resolu(ons passed by the Board

9 9 Roles: Chair of the Board Elected by the Board One year term Main spokesperson for the Board Has the same rights as any other member of the Board Must adhere to the Board s direc(ons Has several specific du(es under the Educa(on Act

10 10 Responsibilities of the Board Chair SPECIFIC DUTIES: Preside over mee(ngs of the Board Conduct the mee(ngs in accordance with Board procedures and prac(ces Ensure that agendas are prepared for Board mee(ngs Ensure that members of the Board have informa(on needed for informed discussion Act as spokesperson to the public on behalf of the Board Convey the decisions of the Board to the Director Provide leadership to the Board in maintaining the Board s focus on the mission and vision and on the mul(- year plan Assume other responsibili(es specified by the Board

15 15 Accountability of Boards Under Provincial Interest Regulation THE PROVINCIAL INTEREST REGULATION (PIR) WAS ENACTED FEBRUARY 26, BOARDS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR: Academic achievement of students Student health and safety Good governance of the school Board Performance of the Board and of the director in carrying out their responsibili(es Parent involvement The introduction of this Regulation underscores the importance for Boards to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of their governance practices.
