1 . REFLECTIVE PRACTICE The previous evidence-gathering activities and practical tasks have already required you to reflect on your own practice. You will have considered your skills in supporting children s development and thought about what you do well and where you need additional advice, support or training. In the next sequence of activities you will focus more closely on your own role and responsibilities and the importance of continuous reflection so that you are able to develop the professional skills essential for working in the childcare sector. Using your own reflections and drawing on the feedback from others will help you to produce a plan for your own professional development. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The following activities will support you to generate evidence of your own duties and responsibilities and show how these support the relevant standards for the sector. You will also demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of how your own values and beliefs can affect your practice and the importance of reviewing your own practice so that you can provide an effective and high quality service. CYPW Unit 9: 1.1, 1.2 CCLD Unit 9: 1.1, 1.2 Task 1 To show your knowledge and understanding of your own work role you need to obtain a copy of: your job description any additional guidance on your duties relevant standards, eg National Occupational Standards for Children s Care Learning and Development (NOS CCLD) in relation to your own duties. You will need to discuss your understanding of these with your assessor. On a separate sheet, annotate your own job description to: match examples of duties and responsibilities show where own job description is expressed in relevant standards. It means thinking about and making sense of your experiences and using the evidence to improve the ways in which you work. 132

4 EVIDENCE GATHERING In this activity you will identify an area of your work that will capture evidence of how you work with others and use feedback from them to help you to review your own practice and plan for personal development. Feedback may come from a variety of sources. As well as your own manager you should seek feedback from your assessor and colleagues. You may also receive feedback from professionals from outside agencies and from children, young people and their families. The evidence gathered will be used to produce your personal development plan. Remember that the targets set for your development should be SMART: Specific be clear on what you expect to achieve Measurable consider how you will know when you have met your target Achievable it must be a target which is achievable within a reasonable time and be likely you will be able to achieve it Realistic appropriate for your own role and responsibility Timed has a clear timescale for achievement. You must measure your progress in the light of your plans to show improvements in your practice. Your assessor will help you to identify suitable items of evidence.
