4 You will spend 2-6 months living at our project base in the town of Moshi, Tanzania. Volunteers from around the world travel to take part in a number of short-term community development volunteer programs, including our Girl Impact project, which focuses around 6 key areas (or Pillars) that empower young women. Interns support this work by assisting our teams on the ground to develop new programs, monitor and evaluate our existing programs, and gain exposure to real gender equality issues in a developing African country. We run a number of after-school clubs and initiatives that engage and work with young girls and boys in the town of Moshi and its surrounding villages. In a safe and interactive environment, it offers a space where they can explore and learn about gender issues in workshops and activities led by interns. Topics range, but can include anything from health, early pregnancy, family, crime and self-defence; all with the aim of helping them form healthy relationships and become changemakers in their community. One of our most established and successful initiatives is our women s group, formed in response to their struggle for a regular income. Many of the women who form part of this group have very little education and no resources as individuals, so coming together has helped them feel empowered and provided them with a platform to earn a sustainable income. Interns work with this dedicated group of 13 women, providing them with the necessary skills and resources to develop income-generating activities. Through our current program, interns and volunteers have helped them develop an event and catering business and set up a platform where they will mentor and help create incomegenerating activities for the next generation of women in their community. As an intern, you will help form an enabling environment for the creation of grassroots-level change in gender equality within the Moshi area. This is achieved by regular engagement, conversation, collection of data and contribution to new ideas that are practical and have long-term sustainable outcomes. Our focus is to recognize the needs of the girls and women in the communities and devise strategies to support this group with regards to status and health. Forming trust and openness will be achieved with this support structure and a range of programs that will firstly target this group, before introducing men and boys into the conversation. This is an area we specialize in as we recognize its importance. You will have 3 professional experts to support you as an individual: 1. A senior member of the African Impact staff team on the ground who will add context to your specific interests within this field. 2. A highly qualified Personal Development Coach to work with you through one to one and group discussion. They support you with tools to use throughout your experience and beyond, exploring personal goals and opportunities for your future. 3. Monitoring and Evaluation is the measure of the impact of your work. You will be guided by our Educational Trainer on how to analyze data and translate it into valuable communications.

5 Interns are required to submit a weekly journal entry, as well as a final reflection, which demonstrates growth, including professional and personal development over the course of the internship. Each week you will also meet with your mentor to discuss the week s activities, your highs and lows, and what you have overcome. This will give you the chance to discuss your strengths and weaknesses so we can help you learn what to focus on moving forward.. You will also get involved in fundraising activities to generate donations for the program and our focal projects, including our women s groups. Being able to share success stories on social media is a huge contributor to awareness of our program and helps to create knowledge of gender equality issues as a whole, so as an intern you will be responsible for sharing information about our initiative on various social media platforms, including The Girl Impact website. We will support you in collecting information, teaching you how to use this practically on the ground to share in a clear message worldwide. 1. Three women s income generating groups are supporting 35 women in the local community to boost their monthly income rural women have completed a professional catering course to create a long-term, sustainable business and have already delivered four events after their training students completed a six-month sexual reproductive health course with 87% of students said they had learnt something new 4. We lead International Day of the Girl Child with our partner secondary school, with over 150 students attending in support 5. We implemented a Changemakers Curriculum with NAFGEM (Network Against FGM) to train the NAFGEM girls how to facilitate support groups

6 We embrace all those wanting to take on a journey of self-discovery and have a passion for creating change on crucial global issues. This will enhance your future career and compliment current studies. In return we are looking for you to step outside your comfort zone and be prepared to work and communicate with new cultures and be part of innovation for long term change. Due to the nature of this environment and the topics that we touch upon during our workshops, we require a candidate to have a reasonable level of emotional strength, open-mindedness and maturity. This is important as we work predominantly with vulnerable children and interns need to be able to provide appropriate support to them. We require an intern to have a positive attitude, be willing to push past their comfort zone, opening them up to new knowledge and skills. Our intern must have strong attention to detail that can be applied to rigorous monitoring and evaluation activities. It is important for an individual to be a self-starter, and while they will work within a supportive team, it is essential that an intern is able to be pro-active and motivated to take on new challenges and guide volunteers. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about gender equality issues, human rights and is able to adapt to living in a developing African country. Living and interning in Tanzania will bring its own unique challenges, so you will also need to be patient, positive and flexible!
