The internship experience will elevate a simple work experience as the student reflects, looks for deeper meaning and strives to personally contribute. The student will earn credit based on the student s documentation of his/her internship experience, observations, and results informed by his/her employment experience. COURSE OBJECTIVES In pursuit of personal professional development, the student will apply his/her skills, abilities, interests and values through pre-professional experiences, such as part-time work, internships, or service. The student will present him/herself professionally in these pursuits. As the internship semester concludes, the student will be able to self-assess his/her professional behaviors, and accept a critique from his/her supervisor, who will also complete an assessment of the student s performance and behaviors. Student and supervisor appraisals in combination with performance in the coursework will serve to evaluate the performance of the student in the following objectives: 1. Technical skills (including, as applicable, writing, computer, presentation, analytic, project management) 2. Work habits (including punctuality and attendance, motivation to achieve, organization, time management, resiliency when met with challenges, attention to detail, speed for learning new tasks, completing work on time, conscientiousness, professionalism) 3. Interpersonal skills (oral communication, listening, acceptance of supervision, willingness to accept feedback, working collaboratively, poise, confidence, attitude, conflict management)

2 3V57 Syllabus UD p. 2 ELIGIBILITY FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT The student will secure an approved position, supervised by an administrative employee of the organization. With few exceptions, students are required to intern at an external (off-campus) organization to qualify to receive credit. Students are required to adhere to the start/end dates identified in the registration paperwork and should span the length of a standard semester (minimum of six weeks). Student must be of at least sophomore standing (earned at least 30 credit hours) and have a GPA of 2.5 or above. Credit hours will correspond to the number of hours worked: 1 credit: hours (over the course of a full semester) 2 credits: hours (over the course of a full semester) 3 credits: 150+ (over the course of a full semester) TEXTBOOK AND REQUIRED TECHNOLOGY There is no textbook for this course. Students are required to use the UD Brightspace System to enter assignments. Interns must successfully, autonomously navigate the system with little to no guidance to demonstrate necessary professionalism and preparedness to complete the internship course. Students should use PC/laptop to complete all assignments and are strongly advised to use a physical internet connection. POLICIES & PROCEDURES Attendance All coursework is completed in an online setting. Students are required to schedule and attend a meeting with the instructor prior to registration. GRADING CRITERIA Students will earn a grade of either Pass or No Pass in this course. The following grading scale will be used to determine your final grade for the class: PASS pts. NO PASS 0-69 Student performance in the 3V57 course will be assessed on several measures: 1. Weekly Journal*: 40% (40/100 points) The following chart provides a breakdown of the value of each journal entry based on credit hours earned in the course: Course Credits Number of Journal Value per Entry Entries points points points *Late journal entries are not accepted, and the student will be penalized the full amount for submissions after the 12:00 PM CST deadline. 2. Updated Resume: 10% (10/100 points) 3V57 Syllabus UD p. 3 Internship coursework corresponds with the demands of a real-world professional environment which requires interns to demonstrate attention to detail, critical thinking, and professionalism. Each assignment includes deadline and evaluation criteria. Interns should review course requirements and maintain a pace throughout the semester to meet all deadlines. Interns are expected to initiate communication with their instructor with questions, updates and schedule changes, technology concerns, or need for clarification. Interns should check their regularly for announcements, reminders, and updated grades.

4 3V57 Syllabus UD p. 4 ASSIGNMENTS AND EVALUATION All assignments are required to earn a grade of P (Pass) for BUS/GST 3V57. Specific academic units may require different assignments and assessments or adhere to the assignments below. Please review & initial each goal below to indicate understanding and agreement: The intern bears the responsibility to understand the assignments, usage of required technology, and to maintain a pace throughout the semester to meet all deadlines. Please review carefully: 1. Weekly Journals and Record of Hours Worked: 40% of Total Grade Deadline: Monday, 12:00pm CST Due dates determined during registration process (see below). OFFICE USE ONLY: To be completed by OPCD or INSTRUCTOR OF RECORD at registration meeting: Credit hours: Journal entries: Instructor and student will review calendar and determine final journal deadlines, taking into account weeks when intern will not be working or will not be submitting a journal entry. Unless an exception is required, journal entries will be divided evenly over the course of the semester. Journal Entry Deadlines (12:00 PM on the following dates): Meet deadlines. Late journal entries are not accepted. Upload a Word document through the Brightspace system (under Journal Entries module). Evaluation of entries will be based on these criteria: Number of hours worked for the prior week (not included in the 250-word minimum). College-level writing, free of grammatical and spelling errors, is required. Journal content must reflect critical thinking skills and personal observations, reflections, predictions, and insights. A list of tasks completed for the week will not be accepted. Instructor reserves right to penalize poorly written entries that lack substance or that are redundant. Minimum word count is 250 words/week NOT INCLUSIVE of heading (e.g., title, number of hours worked, etc.). Each journal entry must include 250 words of substantive content. 2. Final Report: 25% of Total Grade Deadline: Monday, May 6, :00 PM CST Upload Word document through Brightspace system (Final Report module). Title the document: LastName.FirstName.FinalReport. Files submitted via , fax, mail, or in-person will not be accepted. Late reports will result in a penalty of 50% for the assignment. Reports must be substantive to be considered complete for the purposes of passing the course. Minimum of 250 words per topic addressing each of the following: o Topic 1: Summarize your experience as an intern, identifying skills and interests that were strengthened from the experience. Provide an overview of the value of the internship in relation to your academic studies at the University of Dallas. o Topics 2, 3, and 4: Assess your progress in achieving the three learning outcomes you identified with your employer at the onset of the internship. Please write one composition per outcome. Consider some of the following questions in drafting your content: What obstacles did you overcome?

What prior beliefs or behaviors were either confirmed or challenged during your work toward achieving the outcome? 3. Updated Resume: 10% of Total Grade Deadline: Monday, May 6, :00 PM CST Upload a Word document through Brightspace system (Updated Resume module). Title the document: LastName.FirstName.Resume. Files submitted via , fax, mail, or in-person will not be accepted. Updated (to include current internship) properly formatted, and error-free. Resume should meet criteria for Acceptable (Excellent or Good) on the attached rubric (p. 8-9 of the syllabus). 4. Professional Behaviors Self-Assessment: 10% of Total Grade Deadline: Monday, May 6, :00 PM CST Complete the Professional Behaviors Self-Assessment (Qualtrics survey). Student will receive a link to an online survey from the instructor via (from Qualtrics at noreply@q server.com). The student may complete the survey at any time after receiving the link. The student bears the responsibility of providing an accurate address on his/her registration paperwork. The student must double-check his/her inbox and spam/trash folder for from noreply@q server.com. 5. Satisfactory Supervisor Evaluation of Performance : 15% of Total Grade Deadline: Monday, May 6, :00 PM CST Submit via online survey (Qualtrics survey) by the employer. The student s supervisor will receive an online Employer/Student Evaluation of Performance via (from Qualtrics at noreply@q server.com) and must complete and submit by deadline. The student bears the responsibility of verifying the accuracy of his/her supervisor s and phone number, and verifying employer s receipt of the survey (employer should double check inbox and spam/trash folder). Strict adherence to the deadline for submission of the Evaluation is required to earn a Passing grade. Students bear the responsibility of following up with their supervisors about the content and the submission status of the survey. In the unlikely event that an employer indicates that student is not employable due to on-the-job behavior, the student will be penalized 50% for this assignment.

Contact Gaby Martin: gmartin@udallas.edu Phone: Office: Augustine 132 The University of Dallas Internship Program allows qualified students to participate in a work program with duties that directly relate to their field of study in order to be able to become a more valuable contributor in his/her chosen field more quickly. The student will enroll in the designated internship course and work with the employer for a predetermined minimum number of hours/week. A list of three measurable objectives will be jointly developed by the student and the employer/supervisor. This will provide relevant learning experience for the student and enable the intern to make a productive contribution to the employer. The employer/supervisor will evaluate the effectiveness of the intern and will complete a Professional Evaluation as an ONLINE SURVEY, followed up with a personal evaluation meeting with the student. The employer will receive an requesting the completed survey prior to the end-date of the student s contract or prior to the University of Dallas semester end (whichever comes first). Please note: The student cannot earn academic credit for his/her internship without this completed survey, and they may be penalized for submission of late surveys. We greatly appreciate your time and willingness to provide our students with valuable work experience and feedback prior to graduation. At any time during the internship, please bring to our attention any performance issues/concerns; we would in turn meet with the student and identify appropriate corrective action plans. The employer agrees to employ the student for the time period specified in section 1 below, under the same conditions and rules that govern other employees. The employer agrees to set (3) specific, measurable work objectives that will offer varied work experiences and training. The employer is not expected to continue the student s employment or give preferential treatment to the student intern.
