At the Institute, the year 2016 has been a very productive year full of growth and change, some of the changes I am sure have been felt by some of you. Last month we marked a major milestone in implementing one of the Institute s major pillars under the HRMP Act, that of certification of HR professionals. The launch of the Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) Examination Curriculum which will be administered and managed by the Human Resource Management Professional Examination Board (HRMPEB) heralds a new dawn for the HR sector in the country being one of its kind in Africa. In the same spirit we have a lot lined up for you in the coming year, you will have numerous opportunities to interact with fellow professionals and polish your skills. I encourage you to embrace and support the ongoing transformation at the Institute and thereof the HR sector. I. MILESTONES FOR 2016 The year 2016 though started in the middle when the council was gazette on 19 th of May; we have been able to move with speed and determination to achieve quite a number of things. a) The council was able to expand the secretariat to bring on board individuals to assist in various capacities such as Public Relations, Compliance and the Accounts section. b) The input of this officers has indeed been valuable in the operations of the secretariat which is geared towards service delivery and meeting the ever increasing demand of you, our members. We hope for better delivery in the coming year 2017 when operations of the Institute are expected to go a notch higher in terms of publicity and compliance. 1

2 c) The council managed to develop an interactive website which was officially launched in August The website is a culmination of many ideas and diverse input from various quarters to capture and address the needs of our members and those of other stakeholders. d) The Institute was able to organize Executive Courses which are intended to impart knowledge and equip participants with skills in various areas of HR management and address emerging/trending issues from a global perspective thus domesticated to suit their application in the local industry. The courses are structured in a way that earns participants CPD points upon completion. II. OPERATIONALIZATION OF REGIONAL OFFICES Regulations that operationalize the election of the council has divided the IHRM jurisdiction into four (4) main regions which are; Coast/Eastern, Rift Valley, Western/Nyanza, Nairobi/Central/North Eastern. These regions have successfully carried out their elections and now they have executive officials who deal with branch matters among them being; Organizing of Regional HR forums Hold CPD activities as per the Calendar Welfare activities Mobilization The policy framework which has structured regional offices, has given the mandate to any 30 members who are properly registered to form a branch by informing the Secretariat and in conjunction with the regional officials, a functional branch may be established. The policy further recognizes the get-together of regional officials under the leadership of the national chairman which forms the HR SUMMIT. The role of a summit is to equalize and benchmark their regions against one another to ensure equity and fairness in their operations. The first summit will be held in the first quarter of Regions have had conventions which have been variously organized in conjunction with the Secretariat to share and disseminate professional knowledge to members. Regional offices are tasked to ensure that their members are operating within ethical conduct of the HR profession by respecting and upholding ethical standards as per our Code of Conduct. This year has witnessed a few cases of indiscipline majorly attributed to the usage of social media which I ask the members to refrain from in the New Year. Be guided by our Social Media policy whenever you are in doubt. III. CHRM NEWS The College of Human Resource Management (CHRM) which is the training arm of IHRM has been accredited to offer the Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) curriculum starting early January I urge those interested in pursuing the course to join the college. Plans are underway to acquire a charter for CHRM to offer degree programs. 2

HRMPEB NEWS On 9 th November at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC), the latest addition to the HR fraternity was introduced to the public. The Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) examination is the first professional certification examination in HR in the country and the region. It will certainly enhance competency in HR practice country-wide. The CHRP Examination is divided into three parts; a) CHRP Part I which is the foundation level for persons without a HR background. b) CHRP Part II which is the intermediate stage this level is structured to accommodate candidates who are already in the HR profession, with relevant HR qualifications, but need to enhance their HR knowledge and skills. c) CHRP Part III which is the advanced level of the course, part of whose entry criteria will be holders of Higher Diplomas in HRM from KNEC or Masters Degree holders in Human Resource Management. The CHRP curriculum is 80% practical and 20% theoretical, it will be offered in partnership with Institutions of higher learning, meaning that every student has to be registered with an accredited Institution while the Human Resource Management Professional Examination Board (HRMPEB) will administer and manage the examinations. HRMPEB will give exemptions to holders of Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates from recognized universities, examination bodies and other recognized institutions. Exemptions shall be granted on paper by paper basis to applicants who meet the set criteria. Compliance audit is set to begin in earnest early January to establish compliance of both individuals and HR firms which are operating without accreditation. Majority of Human Resource Professionals working in the public service have not complied fully with the Human Resource Management Professional (HRMP) Act. The Institute wrote to all Government Ministries requesting Principal Secretaries to ensure that all HR professionals working in their departments have complied. There are three ways in which the ministries can assist professionals; a) Facilitate them to register as members b) Acquire the required CPD points by sponsoring professionals to trainings and seminars c) Assist them acquire practicing certificates The Ministry of Industrialization, Transport and Infrastructure, Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Education and the Department of Marine Commerce have responded positively. We hope we will receive positive feedback from the rest of the Ministries. VII. SUCCESSION AT IHRM The recruitment of the new Executive Director has been ongoing and we hope it will be soon concluded to enable the long serving Executive Director Mr. Samson Osero hand over to the incoming director. ANNUAL IHRM GALA DINNER AND DANCE The IHRM Annual Gala Dinner and Dance was successfully held at the Hilton Hotel on Friday 2 nd December There was a good turnout which made the dinner a success. Such forums are really a valuable way of expanding members social intelligence by learning from the success of others, attaining new contacts and telling others about your past and current experiences. It s a practice that has proven to be successful and has a number of benefits which include; generation of referrals which leads to increased business opportunities, building connections with new people, asserting and receiving positive influence while assisting in increasing ones confidence just to mention but a few. 4

5 KENGEN Managing Director and CEO Eng. Albert Mugo who graced the occasion challenged HR professionals to understand the business they work in for them to be effective and influential. Eng. Mugo s message was clear that HR managers have to encourage people under their supervision to love their jobs, be their own bosses and appreciate their efforts for them to be effective and efficient, ultimately leading to higher productivity at the workplace. The Institute launched the Strategic Plan which will guide us moving forward on how best to achieve our objectives. In October, the Institutions held the biggest HRM Annual National Conference in Naivasha where close to 700 delegates attended a 3 day event. I want to thank each one of you for the support you have accorded the Institute. As you get into the festive mood and join your families and friends over the holiday season. I would encourage you to ensure that you are in good standing with the Institute ahead of the compliance deadline of 31 st December ELIJAH SITIMAH NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, IHRM 5
