1 Heart of Illinois Human Resource Council Newsletter Issue VI Nov/Dec 2013 From the President Be Seen in 2013 Tell your HIHRC Story It has been a great year for the HIHRC! We will finish out 2013 with one of my favorite events Share the Spirit. Some very fun ideas are being considered for this gathering. I am so thankful for all of our current board members and for the hard work and dedication that each one has put into planning a year full of valuable events. We worked well as a team and had a lot of fun too! We just had our 2014 planning meeting where we welcomed 4 brand new board members and began to brainstorm about what we will offer next year. Our 2014 President, Laurie Trompeter, executed the meeting with a great deal of organization. I left that time feeling excited about passing the torch onto Laurie and working alongside her and the rest of the board next year. We want to continue to hold events that will bring educational value and allow for networking among HR Professionals in the Peoria area. In conference news, next up is the SHRM Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. This conference is designed specifically for chapter board members, and I am happy that 4 of our top leaders plan to attend this year. As a part of this conference they will spend a day on Capitol Hill working to promote HR legislation and will have an opportunity to tour SHRM Headquarters. Conference/Meeting Dates Time Location SHRM Leadership Conference 11/21-11/23/2013 All Day Washington, DC I have been attending HIHRC events since the early 2000 s. This is my 5 th year serving on the board and I have loved every part of the journey. I have made such wonderful friends and have gained many, many professional contacts as a result of my time working on the HIHRC Board. I am looking forward to one more year on the board. I intend to continue to support this organization for many years to come. It has been such an honor to serve as President this year. I am very thankful for this opportunity. If you want to get more involved in The Heart of Illinois HR Council then we want to hear from you. Please invite a friend to an upcoming event and Be seen in 2013 Tell your HIHRC story ~Bobbi

4 The Heart of Illinois HR Council s 2013 Theme: Be Seen in Tell Your HIHRC Story. This month, Laurie Trompeter My HIHRC story starts out like many of the rest. As a new graduate with my first job in HR, my supervisor encouraged me to join the local HR group. I was a member for a few years, but didn t really get involved, and eventually stopped attending meetings. Fast forward a few years, and I decided to get my PHR certification. The thought of all of those recertification hours was overwhelming! I decided to re-join the HIHRC as an affordable way to get recertification hours. This time, I decided to become more involved. I started out by participating in the Share the Spirit meeting that year, and quickly began to meet other HR professionals. I had so much fun, I decided to run for the board! My first year on the board, I was the membership chair, which was great! I got to put names with faces and meet all of our fantastic members as I saw them each month at the sign in table. Now, after several years on the board, I am looking forward to being the HIHRC president for If you are considering becoming more involved, go for it! Volunteer for ELITE, bring an item for the Share the Spirit Auction in December, or just say hi to the person next to you at the luncheon. I am lucky to have experienced great friendships, solid advice, and quite a few laughs through HIHRC, and I look forward to 2014! You Can Be Seen and Help Out the Bradley SHRM Chapter! Bradley University s SHRM chapter is interested in getting speakers from the human resources field to speak at their chapter meetings about their experience in HR, what types of HR duties you do on the job, or any HR items you are passionate about. They meet every other Thursday at 6pm. If interested, please contact Katie Hardman, Bradley SHRM Treasurer, at khardman@mail.bradley.edu.
