2 2 nd S A F E T Y EXCELLENCE AWARDS FOR MANUFACTURING & CONFERENCE ON SAFETY FOR SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING GROWTH 14 September 2012 Federation House, Tansen Marg, New Delhi Overview The latest ILO estimates show that safety at work remains a major global concern. The global economic cost of occupational accidents and disease represents 4% of the global GDP (Gross Domestic Product). In India also, as per the statistics of Directorate General, Factory Advice Service & Labour Institute (DGFASLI), the number of fatal injuries in the factories have increased from 1369 in 2008 to 1454 in 2010 while the number of non-fatal injuries have come down in manufacturing. This emphasises the need for developing preventive safety culture in organisations and also strict compliance with safety standards at national level with an aim to adopt global best practices. Organisations need to develop a safety system which prevents risk and need to move away from traditional safety strategies which rely only on control of conditions and causes of an accident. While, India does have safety standards and also the National Policy on Safety, Health and Environment at work place but translating these provisions into real practice remains a challenge. Many manufacturing organisations are implementing voluntary and self-regulated Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems. But preventive safety culture is a dynamic and progressive process and evolves over a period of time. Sharing of best practices and experiences is instrumental in developing such a preventive safety culture and contributes significantly in achieving our objective of safety at work place.
