3 COURSE INFORMATION SUMMARY This program has been designed to meet the needs of leaders and managers working in the health and aged care sector. There has been significant growth in this sector in recent years, and this will continue due to the changing demographics of our society. A key requirement for this growing workforce will be the development of talented leaders and managers in hospitals, aged care facilities, medical centres, allied health practices and other associated organisations and services. 3

5 COURSE OVERVIEW The BSB51918 Diploma of Leadership and Management is comprised of twelve units, made up of four core and eight electives. The elective units have been selected and clustered to best match the characteristics of the health sector and are based on industry consultation and industry organisational needs. The content of the selected units of competency is delivered with healthcare sector examples, learning activities and scenarios. The program allows students to draw from their own experiences in their particular workplace. All assessments are based on the learner s ability to apply knowledge and understanding to their own workplace, industry and job role. 5

7 COURSE INFORMATION Delivery Methods The BSB51918 Diploma of Leadership and Management is delivered through a blended delivery method. Students will be provided with a Learning Guide and Assessment Booklet for each cluster. In addition to this students can participate in face-to-face workshop days, regular online tutorials and group discussion sessions, depending on individual learning needs. Delivery methods include: Face-to-face workshops / tutorials Workbook-provided content Online sessions Workplace learning, assessment and mentoring sessions Self-directed study, research and reflection. Assessment Methods 7 Carramar Education uses a range of assessment methods to ensure that sufficient evidence is gathered to demonstrate that the students can perform the tasks against the specified criteria. The assessment strategy for this program involves assessment in four distinct dimensions (workplace based projects, short answer questions, professional reflection, and workplace performance verification) and a comprehensive assessment method (clusterbased competency conversation) to draw all the sources of evidence together.

8 Recognition of Prior Learning Many learners already have a high level of skill, knowledge and expertise that can be recognised through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. This process takes into account any previous formal study, work and life experience and then assesses this against the elements of competency to determine if you can receive credit toward a qualification. Students will be able to seek RPL through the submission of a portfolio of evidence which meets the requirements for students undertaking this learning and assessment pathway. This program has been developed in consultation with industry experts, to enhance the leadership and management skills of employees within the health and community sector. Therefore, students who have been supported by their employer to undertake the program and who seek accreditation through the assessment process of RPL, will be encouraged to participate in all the learning activities as part of their on-going professional development. RPL can be applied to parts or the whole course depending on the evidence provided. Credit Transfer If a student has completed one or more of the units of competency that make up this qualification with another Registered Training Organisation (RTO), they can apply for a credit transfer or exemption. A copy of the original transcript must be provided when applying for a credit transfer. 8

9 Entry Requirements and Expectations Students who enrol in this program will: Be currently employed within the health and/or aged care sectors Be seeking to improve their leadership and management skills for their position now or in the future Nominate a suitable workplace mentor and program supervisor, who in turn must agree to undertake that role and associated responsibilities Have access to a computer and internet, including the required knowledge and skill to operate that technology Be organised, self-directed learners, who are able to accept responsibility for their own progress and have well developed language, literacy, numeracy and research skills. In addition, participants will need to provide Carramar Education with their Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. Students are expected to: Commit to completion of the 12-month program, which can be extended to 24 months Participate in workshops, online tutorials and group discussion sessions when organised Develop and implement a number of workplace based projects Participate in monthly program review sessions with their workplace mentor and supervisor Allocate the designated study time necessary to allow reading, research, understanding and application of the content Complete the required learning and assessment activities as outlined in the program documentation, including ongoing selfreflection activities, short answer questions and other tasks as outlined above Provide permission for the RTO to talk to their employer regarding verification of workplace performance. 9

10 Student Support Students who undertake a program of study with Carramar Education are provided with a range of support services, depending on individual needs. Our education staff can assist with identifying particular requirements (such as literacy, numeracy, English language or physical capabilities) and developing strategies to support the individual learner. This may include providing: Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) support Assistive technology Additional tutorials Other mechanisms, such as assistance in using technology for online delivery components. In addition, the administration team can provide support with enrolment processes, changes to contact details or study plan, assisting with access to learning and assessment materials and any other issues encountered throughout the program. Costs This program is a fee for service program. For students who have been nominated and supported by their organisation, arrangements regarding payment of course fees will be made between Carramar and the employer. Individual students will be invoiced for course fees according to the payment schedule provided at the time of enrolment. 10

12 CLUSTER 1: PERSONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS BSBLDR511 Develop and use emotional intelligence Core Unit This unit covers the development and use of emotional intelligence to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the context of the workplace. It includes identifying the impact of own emotions on others in the workplace, recognising and appreciating the emotional strengths and weaknesses of others, promoting the development of emotional intelligence in others and utilising emotional intelligence to maximise team outcomes. It applies to managers who are required to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources and who deal with unpredictable problems as part of their job role. They use initiative and judgement to organise the work of self and others and plan, evaluate and co-ordinate the work of teams. BSBLDR513 Communicate with influence Elective Unit BSBLDR502 Lead and manage effective workplace relationships Core Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to present and negotiate persuasively, lead and participate in meetings and make presentations to customers, clients and other key stakeholders. It applies to managers and leaders who are required to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources, and who deal with unpredictable problems as part of their job role. They use initiative and judgement to organise the work of self and others and plan, evaluate and coordinate the work of teams. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead and manage effective workplace relationships. It applies to individuals in leadership or management who have a prominent role in establishing and managing processes and procedures to support workplace relationships taking into account the organisation s values, goals and cultural diversity. At this level, work will normally be carried out within complex and diverse methods and procedures, which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies. BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development Elective Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create systems and process to organise information and prioritise tasks. It applies to individuals working in managerial positions who have excellent organisational skills. The work ethic of individuals in this role has a significant impact on the work culture and patterns of behaviour of others as managers at this level are role models in their work environment. 12

13 CLUSTER 2: MANAGING PERFORMANCE BSBWOR502 Lead and manage team effectiveness Core Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead teams in the workplace and to actively engage with the management of the organisation. It applies to individuals working at a managerial level who facilitate work teams and build a positive culture within their work teams. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures requiring the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies. BSBHRM405 Support the recruitment, selection and induction of staff Elective Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to execute tasks associated with the recruitment cycle and apply indepth knowledge of the work of the organisation, and how recruitment and selection practices fit with other human resources functions. It applies to individuals who support recruitment, selection and induction functions under the direction of a human resource manager. BSBHRM512 Develop and manage performance management processes Elective Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and facilitate implementation of performance management processes and to coordinate individual or group learning and development to encourage effective employee performance. It applies to individuals who are authorised to establish effective performance management processes for an organisation and who may have staff reporting to them. BSBMGT502 Manage people performance Elective Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage the performance of staff who report to them directly. Development of key result areas and key performance indicators and standards, coupled with regular and timely coaching and feedback, provide the basis for performance management. It applies to individuals who manage people. It covers work allocation and the methods to review performance, reward excellence and provide feedback where there is a need for improvement. The unit makes the link between performance management and performance development, and reinforces both functions as a key requirement for effective managers. 13

14 CLUSTER 3: MANAGING OPERATIONS BSBMGT517 Manage operational plan Core Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and monitor implementation of the operational plan to provide efficient and effective workplace practices within the organisation s productivity and profitability plans. Management at a strategic level requires systems and procedures to be developed and implemented to facilitate the organisation s operational plan. It applies to individuals who manage the work of others and operate within the parameters of a broader strategic and/or business plan. BSBFIM501 Manage budgets and financial plans Elective Unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake financial management within a work team in an organisation. It includes planning and implementing financial management approaches, supporting team members whose role involves aspects of financial operations, monitoring and controlling finances and reviewing and evaluating effectiveness of financial management processes. It applies to managers in a wide range of organisations and sectors who have responsibility for ensuring that work team financial resources are used effectively and are managed in line with financial objectives of the team and organisation. BSBRSK501 Manage risk Elective Unit BSBMGT516 Facilitate continuous improvement Elective Unit This unit describes skills and knowledge required to manage risks in a range of contexts across an organisation or for a specific business unit or area in any industry setting. It applies to individuals who are working in positions of authority and are approved to implement change across the organisation, business unit, program or project area. They may or may not have responsibility for directly supervising others. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead and manage continuous improvement systems and processes. Particular emphasis is on the development of systems and the analysis of information to monitor and adjust performance strategies, and to manage opportunities for further improvements. It applies to individuals who take an active role in managing a continuous improvement process in order to achieve an organisation s objectives. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem-solving and decision-making strategies. 14
