1 JOB TITLE: REPORTS TO: SALARY: Head of Sports Science and Sports Medicine World Class Swimming Programme (WCSP) National Performance Director Swimming (NPD) 60,000-75,000 per annum (dependent on experience) JOB PURPOSE To lead and strategically manage the development of a world leading sports science and sports medicine (SSSM) programme which provides the platform to enable British Swimmers to win medals at major competitions, Olympic Games and World Championships. To work collaboratively with coaching staff to identify and develop research and innovations which bring performance benefits. JOB LOCATION: Office to be agreed. You will also be expected to undertake national and international travel as is necessary to fulfil the job to the satisfaction of British Swimming. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Strategy 1.1. Lead the development of the four year SSSM strategy for the WCSP 1.2. Oversee the implementation of the strategy across all areas of SSSM, monitoring and reporting on progress as required 1.3. Work closely with the GB Head Coach and Head of Elite Development to identify and roll out key innovations which make a performance difference to swimmers competing at major international events 1.4. Work closely with the English Institute of Sport and other research partners to develop knowledge and innovations which will make a performance difference for coaches and athletes Oversee service delivery of SSSM support to World Class programme athletes national centres, home nation programmes and identified clubs Work closely with the NPD, GB Head Coach, Head of Elite Development and others on the profiling, monitoring and evaluation of athletes to ensure athlete and coach SSSM requirements are tailored to their needs and the priorities of the WCSP 1.7. Contribute SSSM knowledge, innovation and research to performance learning activities 2. Leadership 2.1. Foster a vibrant, open, challenging, performance culture, which strives towards the highest standards of SSSM support and performance enhancement 2.2. Lead the performance management and development of the SSSM team Collaborate with the Head of Performance Team Development to develop the team to within the British Swimming world class behaviours model 2.4. Work closely with the home nation sports institutes to ensure SSSM practitioners are supported and developed to the highest standards both in terms of the technical and non-technical requirements of their roles 2.5. Ensure processes are in place to specifically develop and select SSSM staff for major international competitions particularly, FINA World Championships and the Olympic Games Page 1 of 5

2 2.6. Support Lead practitioners to develop their direct reports and grow the depth and breadth of expertise within the team 2.7. Work with key partners to ensure that facilities are developed and maintained to provide a daily training environment that maximises the quality of SSSM support including but not limited to: specialist swimming biomechanics technology and installations, strength and conditioning equipment and space, and clinical treatment and consultation areas. 3. Management 3.1. Ensure high standards of professional practice, clinical governance and duty of care are maintained across all relevant areas of SSSM 3.2. Lead the evaluation process of all the SSSM support services and personnel with an emphasis on effective coach and athlete engagement to maximise performance impact 3.3. Ensure a commitment to individual athlete planning and reporting is adopted across the whole of the SSSM team and integrates fully with the development of process goals led by the GB Head Coach and Head of Elite Development 3.4. With the support of the Swimming Analysis Lead ensure that critical determinants of swimming performance are continuously monitored and provide insight on the development of identified WCSP athletes 3.5. Ensure that data collected for performance/training and injury/illness surveillance is stored, managed and analysed to maximise the efficiency of coaching, training and performance across all areas of the WCSP 3.6. Work with the Athlete Health Lead and Chief Medical Officer to ensure athlete availability is maximised through world leading injury and illness surveillance and implementation of evidence based strategies 3.7. Manage the SSSM budget to maximise the return on investment within the agree parameters across the four year Olympic cycle 3.8. Develop the business plan for the SSSM programme for the forthcoming Olympic cycle to ensure SSSM plans are adequately supported and sustained 4. General 4.1 Carry out any other duties as required by National Performance Director. 4.2 Play a full and active role as a member of the Performance Leadership Group in the World Class Swimming Programme. 4.3 Comply with all British Swimming policies. 4.4 Comply with all policies and procedures set down by the organisation and in particular those relating to equality and diversity. 4.5 Drive own performance development plan, actively identifying new areas for learning and committing to a culture of continual improvement. 4.6 Maintain own CPD programme and complete appraisal and revalidation. 4.7 May be required to work with persons under 18 years of age (DBS check required). KEY RESULT AREAS Ensures the development and implementation of world leading SSSM strategies for British Swimming. Sets and maintains appropriate vision, standards and working philosophy for the British Swimming SSSM programme to reflect its performance focus. Oversees a SSSM programme that adds significant value to coaches of British athletes competing in national teams. Page 2 of 5

3 Builds and maintains an effective working relationship with key stakeholders which delivers performance focused support services to all World Class Programme swimmers and their coaches. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications Educated to higher degree level within sports science or sports medicine or possesses extensive management experience within the field of sports science and medicine. Undertaken further professional development in people management, leadership or similar fields. Experience Understanding of high performance swimming. Demonstrated experience of strategic planning or of building an effective SSSM programme within an international sport with proven impact. Proven track record successfully managing the effective delivery of sports science and/or sports medicine services. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with coaches and support staff to deliver innovations with performance impact Broad knowledge of individual SSSM disciplines. Demonstrated ability to effectively performance manage staff, monitor and evaluate support service impact Demonstrated experience in effectively managing budgets. Skills/Behaviours Proven exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills such as the ability to effectively influence and persuade. Proven ability to present compelling cases for coach buy in. Proven ability to accurately analyse and translate performance data into meaningful SSSM opportunities and to generate new ideas.
