4 MEETING ADVANCED MANUFACTURING STAKEHOLDER NEEDS The challenges presented to human resource development, by RE- INDUSTRIALIZATION (INDUSTRY4.0) and rapid technology implementation acceleration will place very high demands on companies to multi-skill their workforce, retain skilled workers, and to create a constant supply to meet growth demands.

5 THE SKILLS GAP CAUSED MAINLY BY: Retirement of millions of experienced and knowledgeable workers globally, Technology Advancement, Miss-alignment of competencies required, Outdated training and apprenticeship models IT IS PREDICTED THAT: More than 10 million Manufacturing sector jobs are unfilled globally due to skills gap (USA - 3,5 million skilled workers required in Manufacturing of which more than 2 million will remain unfilled)

6 OLD VS NEW TRAINING MODELS OLD Straight educational hours combined with OJT No industry-wide standards Individual companies are responsible for implementation programme design and management NEW Competency-based approach aligning the knowledge and skills requirements of industry Modularity, stackability and international standards based New framework allows organizations and workforce educators to customize programs towards specific industry needs including pre- and postassessments Allows for inclusion of technologybased and distance learning (AR/AI)

20 EXPANSION This would see an expansion of the Intsimbi National Tooling Initiative (NTI) to incorporate all advanced production technologies and allow for the expansion of SD and ED to other competencies and sector needs. Stage 2: Additional specialisation for Sector-specific Requirements Automotive Energy Agroprocessing Mining General Manufacturing Defence Deployment of world-class Skills in various Industry Sectors: Designated and Un-designated Other Stage 1: World-class Skill Bundles not limited to individual Sectors Specialised Tooling Foundry Welding Robotics Fabrication & Assembly Other Technical Skills Many shared Competency Modules with other Skill-sets / Competencies National Tooling Initiative as sound Foundation for most Manufacturing Skill-sets

21 Conclusion The creation of a national supply line of highly skilled workers from entry level to post graduate MSc and PHD tooling support engineers will ensure future SUSTAINABILITY of innovation and competitiveness improvement in the SA Tool, Die, Mold and Advanced manufacturing sectors. This will lead to a new generation of young entrepreneurs and business owners who will transform the SA Tooling and Manufacturing sectors to become a significant supplier into global supply chains.
