For HR professionals, the ability to communicate effectively is a critical competency to be able to contribute to that success. In this session, you will learn the benefits of effective workplace communication, strategies for building a culture of trust and belief, the importance of effective communication as an HR competency, and the skills you need to develop to be a proficient communicator. About the Presenter: Laurie McIntosh, SHRM-SCP, CAE, draws from 20 years as an HR practitioner with industry experience in health care, consumer packaged goods and banking, Laurie relates to the needs of HR professionals because she s lived it. Prior to joining SHRM in 2008 she was an active volunteer leader at the chapter and state level in Nebraska including the chapter president of a super mega chapter and NE state council director. She now works at SHRM headquarters in Alexandria, VA. She received her master s degree in Human Resource Management from Capella University and holds both SHRM-SCP (SHRM Senior Certified Professional) and CAE (Certified Association Executive) designations.

5 Day One General Session Keynote: Tuesday, October 9 9:10 AM 10:10 AM Cedar-Dogwood Business Track: 1 SPHR PHR SHRM-CP SHRM-SCP Credit Embracing Challenges Eric McElvenny, Veteran of the US Marine Corps, Amputee Ironman Triathlete, and Inspirational Speaker SHRM Competencies: Employee Engagement, Workforce Management, Business & HR Strategy, Learning & Development, Organizational Effectiveness & Development Session Description: What is one hard truth that we ALL share? CHALLENGE and ADVERSITY. No one is exempt. In fact, the most successful people go a step further then experiencing it.but they welcome and embrace it. Our lives are filled with challenges that don t just test us, but that promote growth morally, mentally and physically. Our character is defined, developed and revealed through these tests. In this presentation, Eric shares the story of his personal growth after the traumatic experience of losing his leg. He teaches how to put your best foot forward. Easy for him he only has one. While chaos seems to take over our busy lives, there are a number of habits that we can choose to implement in order to allow us to: Thrive in change, take ownership of our unique personal situations, shape culture and environment, and put your best (or only) foot forward. Eric will highlight the habits that have led him from the hospital bed to his first ironman finish line and his continued quest to break the ironman world record for an amputee athlete. This presentation will entertain, but more so inspire you to reflect on these habits and begin to implement them in to your own lives and work. About the Presenter: Eric McElvenny is an amputee endurance athlete living in in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from the United States Naval Academy in 2006 while preparing for his service as a Marine Corps Infantry Officer. Eric deployed three times as a Marine and on his final tour, an incredible experience in Afghanistan, was wounded after stepping on an IED. Eric suffered the amputation of his right leg below the knee, a life-changing opportunity that began his next journey. Faced with a physical challenge and an uncertain future, Eric made a promise to himself to run an Ironman Triathlon. On his journey from the hospital bed in southern California to the finish line in Kona Hawaii, he realized that the challenge and adversity he was up against and the techniques he used to reach the finish line could be used against the challenges we all entertain. When not training, racing and delivering inspiration, Eric can be found with his wife Rachel and three children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Equipping Pittsburgh SHRM members with the skill set to move through transitions while continuing to produce is imperative in the next decade. In this powerful keynote/session Kathy will share how devastating news led her on a journey to discovering the keys to thriving in the face of challenging circumstances. While sharing her 3-R method for resilient behaviors (React, Reframe, Re-energize), Ms. Parry will engage the audience using questions and interactive exercises. Participants will leave the session with the toolkit needed to implement the R-3 method. About the Presenter: A recognized authority in personal energy, productivity, and resilience, Kathy Parry uses her passion to ignite positive changes for professional leaders. Prior to launching her own speaking and consulting business Kathy was a trainer for a super-regional bank on their merger and acquisition team. In this role, she helped others integrate new technology and transition through organizational transformation. Kathy works with corporate leaders, association executives and talent development specialists to help professionals plan for resilience to positively move through disruptive circumstances. Attendees leave her sessions with an action list to power-up their lives and create positive mindsets towards change. Kathy holds degrees in Business and Food Management from Miami University, a Certification in Plant Based Nutrition from T.Colin Campbell Program at ecornell University and a coaching certification from WellCoaches. She holds the designation of professional speaker from the National Speakers Association and speaks at events nationwide. Ms. Parry has authored three books and lives in Pittsburgh, PA.

Former NFL Linebacker and Pittsburgh Steelers Player Development Director Anthony Griggs (AG) would like to present a picture of HR is A Sport...Win It, with particular attention to winning and how that winning is in the details. We all must prepare in order to succeed -- Understanding the different aspects of the training routine as it relates to your profession, will help in achieving this goal. You will only succeed as you prepare to succeed. About the Presenter: Anthony Griggs played professional football for 7 years (Philadelphia Eagles-4 years and Cleveland Browns-3 years) as a Linebacker. He was the Philadelphia Eagles 1985 Man of the Year for his off-field community involvement. He was the Player Development Director and a Strength Coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Club of the NFL for 13 years from More importantly, he was responsible for administering the NFL s Players programs to the Pittsburgh Steelers, which included organizing continued education, career development, financial/business management seminars, and family assistance programs. Through a comprehensive and thorough weight training and conditioning program, Anthony also helped players mature into responsible and caring citizens. Anthony Griggs attended Villanova University where he earned a bachelor s degree in Telecommunications. In the spring of Anthony s junior year, Villanova University dropped their football program. Anthony was then recruited by Ohio State University where he played football his senior year. Currently, Anthony is earning his Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership at Geneva College. Anthony founded AG Squared Networks, Inc. (AGGNET). AGGNET assists businesses, individuals, teams and organizations with optimal growth and development. AGGNET has a number of programs that has helped jump start many careers, businesses and personal goals.

SHRM Competencies: Employee Engagement, Workforce Management, Business & HR Strategy, Total Rewards Organizational Effectiveness & Development Session Description: To remain competitive, employers need to look beyond the status quo to attract, retain, motivate and challenge employees, through developing their own playing field, reassess their role of promoting and insuring the health of employees and providing base pay, incentives, retirement, PTO, etc. Flexibility in benefits, the pros/cons and the impact on employers and employees for a generational workforce that is comprised of diversity never seen is needed to meet the needs of the varying generations. Employees today span five generations and meeting the work for a purpose ideal is a challenge every employer needs to address to have employees feel appreciated, respected in their ideas, opinions, and solutions and that they are needed within this changing business environment, through guidance and rewards for employees who are passionate and utilize their personal drive to enhance performance. About the Presenter: Lesa Votovich s primary focus is advising client s on the intricacies of their health and welfare plan funding, compliance and operational issues. Lesa s 20 years of experience in the employee benefits consulting field includes extensive experience in account and client management including strategic plan design development and consultation including, plan funding, contribution analysis and recommendations, vendor management and negotiations. Lesa is dedicated to strategically working with her clients to develop and implement solid business plans to manage their health and welfare plan offering objectives. Lesa earned a BS from the Pennsylvania State University majoring in Health Policy and Administration. In addition Lesa holds a Pennsylvania Life, Accident and Health License, has a GBA designation from the International Foundation of Employee Benefits, is a candidate to receive her Certified Employee Benefits Specialist designation and has a Certified Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Professional accreditation from the National Association of Health Underwriters.

There is a better way. Data and flexibility are the key and both exists in the market today. Progressive employers of all sizes are taking advantage of funding methods, technology and modeling allowing them to offer richer benefits, lower overall costs and controlling year over year spend. The results are not only straight to the bottom line improvement, but happier more engaged employees. About the Presenter: Scott Bishop is the Sales Leader, Senior Employee Benefits Consultant for TJS Insurance Group, an AssuredPartners Company, with over 16 years industry experience. His first responsibility is to our clients, focused mainly on the middle to larger markets interested in or using alternative funding and analytics to manage their individual benefit programs. As a member of the TJS management committee, Scott s main focus is on the efficiencies of the Benefits Division and more specifically managing the Compliance/Human Resource Consulting and the Benefits Analysis and Data Analytics Teams. More recently he was nominated as a Future Leader within the AssuredParnters family and is involved in both regional and national AP committees. He is licensed in both Life, Accident and Health and Property and Casualty.

For many companies, dynamic innovation is difficult. This session explores how organizations can balance the need to maintain operational excellence with the need to innovate products, services, and process to remain competitive. This session combines academic research and proven practices to learn how to develop Innovation Leaders, individuals who are catalysts for change and lead a new products/services through ideation, design, launch and implementation. The session explores creating organizational structures and processes that unleash creativity, risk-taking, and collaboration throughout the organizational culture. About the Presenter: Maria Taylor is the Executive Director of Executive Education at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. She works with client organizations to create innovative solutions to help clients to build leadership and organizational capability to innovate and grow. She has worked with clients in a wide variety of industries, the military, and government sectors. Maria co-authored Human Resource Transformation (Davies-Black 2008) and The Strategic Human Resource Leader: How to Prepare Your Organization for the 6 Key Trends Shaping the Future (Davies-Black 1998). Maria previous experience includes the Director of Learning Solutions for Raytheon Professional Services, a global leader in learning services and outsourcing operating in over 70 countries. Maria was the Managing Director of Executive Education for the Smeal College of Business Administration at the Pennsylvania State University. Maria was also a Vice President for Maryland National Bank.

Olson, Chief Human Capital Officer, Columbia Care SHRM Competencies: Diversity & Inclusion Session Description: In most industries about half of the candidate pools for leadership positions are comprised of women, but less than a quarter of the leaders are women. Are the companies choosing the best candidates for leadership positions? The answer: statistically, probably not in many cases. Through his presentation and by sharing examples for several industries, Bryan discusses ways to address the issues. Topics include: the business case for gender balance; the role men can and should play in gender balance; implicit bias; the role of sponsorship; and how to get a sponsor. About the Presenter: Bryan Olson is the Chief Human Capital Officer for Columbia Care, the country s first and largest medical marijuana cultivation and dispensary company. Prior to Columbia Care, Bryan was CHRO for global law firm K&L Gates, and he previously held senior HR executive positions at Aetna and United Technologies. He is a former practicing employee benefits and executive compensation attorney at Skadden Arps. He started his career at Fidelity Investments. He was selected as 2016 HR Hero by The Five O Clock Club (now GetFive) for his work in bringing strategic HR to the legal industry. Bryan brings broad experience from multiple industries to bear in his presentations.

SHRM Competencies: Employee Relations, Total Rewards Session Description: Today, employee productivity and financial wellness seem to be inextricably entwined. In a recent SHRM article entitled, Financial Wellness in the Workplace, it was reported that seven out of 10 HR professionals indicated that personal financial challenges have a large or some impact on overall employee performance. Of these HR Professional, approximately one-half reported that employees stress (50%) and their ability to focus on work (47%) were the aspects of employee performance that were most negatively affected by personal financial challenges. Adding, By improving financial wellness in your workplace, you will improve productivity of employees; lower employee absenteeism and turnover and build a more satisfied and loyal workforce. Paul will address why and how to develop a comprehensive and effective worksite personal financial education program to motivate employees to take control of their financial future. About the Speaker: Paul Brahim is a shareholder of BPU and the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the firm. He is also a member of the firm s Investment Committee. Paul joined BPU in 1997 as Managing Director of Wealth Management. In that capacity, Paul led the firm s efforts to provide comprehensive financial planning and asset management services to individual clients. He also introduced and developed BPU s Personal Financial Education (PFE) program and was instrumental in creating the firm s retirement plan offering. Paul was promoted to Executive Vice President in 2006, Chief Compliance Officer in 2011 and his current position in He is frequently interviewed by local and national media and has been named one of western Pennsylvania s top financial advisors for several consecutive years through a survey in Pittsburgh Magazine.

Can't think straight and the conversation gets derailed? Intervening with unacceptable employee conduct is uncomfortable and often avoided in hopes the employee will improve on their own. When employees don't know where they stand, they miss out on knowing the negative impact of their behavior and where they need to improve. This program addresses how to manage your reactivity during difficult conversations so you set clear limits with problem employee behavior and protect your organizational health. You will leave knowing how to give direct, candid feedback and an action plan for a respectful work culture. About the Presenter: As a professional speaker and consultant, Bonnie Artman Fox specializes in productive conflict that fosters organizational health. With over 25 years as a Psychiatric Nurse and Licensed Family Therapist, Bonnie is an expert on emotional intelligence and creating work cultures that bring out the best in employees. She is a Professional Member of the National Speaker's Association and Accredited Executive Leadership Coach with the Boss Whispering Institute. She is currently working on her first book "How Did My Family Get in my Office?" that will be released in 2019.

Working to increase HR's knowledge of agile and Scrum is a first step to supporting their collaborative partnership with these teams to create and enact the most valuable people practices to truly engage and develop talent. And, when you put Scrum up against any HR Initiative it fits - elevating and expediting the way cross-functional HR teams work to deliver real, incremental value to employees and organizations - taking the profession to new levels of strategic relevance. Increasing awareness elevates HR's ability to support change leadership, employee engagement, and coaching of the leaders and teams in the organization using Scrum for strategic gain and using Scrum in HR elevates it further by increasing the speed to value creation for the critical initiatives of a progressive HR organization. About the Presenter: Beth Davis is the founder of The Llewellin Group and is an experienced leader, facilitator, and coach. Beth is known professionally for her ability to creatively align business strategy to people practices while keeping focus on workplace culture and values. Her experience spans the globe - from working in several technology start-ups to multi-billion dollar integrated healthcare delivery systems, financial services, higher education, and multi-faceted engineering, construction, and power industries. Beth s passion is working with organizations and teams to create workplace cultures that focus on the engagement and development of talent at all levels of the organization - shifting workplace culture and practices to support elevated value creation and true high-performance & purpose organizations. Beth is a native of the Pittsburgh Region and is a graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. She holds SPHR certification from the HRCI and is a certified Professional Scrum Master through Scrum.org

15 Concurrent Breakout Session 2 Tuesday, October 9 1:00 PM 2:00 PM Elm-Fir Diversity Track: 1 PHR SHRM-CP SHRM-SCP Credit Creating a Culture of Inclusion Vicki L Suehr, Manager, HR/Payroll Information Systems, Community College of Beaver County SHRM Competencies: Diversity & Inclusion Session Description: This session will focus on the importance of creating a culture of inclusion. At Community College of Beaver County (CCBC), we have a Presidential Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We have worked as a Council to create an environment where everyone feels welcome. I would share some of the successful events we have had such as A Day of Caring for Girls Hope to celebrate Martin Luther King Day, a Common Book Project which will culminate in a trip to the Holocaust Museum. The trip is also open to the public and students. A celebration for Black History month. Safe Zone Training and 3 Safe Zone certified employees on campus. Round Circle discussions. The effects of racial (or any other discrimination) injustice. About the Presenter: Vicki L Suehr, is the Manager, HR/Payroll Information Systems at ommunity College of Beaver County. Vicki also serve as the Co-Facilitator for the Presidential Council on Diversity Equity and Inclusion. She represents CCBC on the countywide Diversity Council which offers us many opportunities to assist the underserved population and to also hire a more diverse workforce for CCBC. Vicki is also the Title IV Deputy Co-Coordinator for students and employees at CCBC and is one of the Safe Zone Certificated employees at the college offering a safe place for any member of the LGBTQ+++ community to come to if they have any problems on campus.

Once-a-year performance reviews are out of sync with the pace of business today. Luanne spent the majority of her career in organizational development and business partnering roles with a Fortune 100 global pharmaceutical organization, capped off by an international role affording her the chance to work and live in Europe for a number of years. Additional roles have included those in the photographic, chemical, nutritional health and consumer products industries. Luanne earned her MBA at William Paterson University and BS in Business Management at Bloomfield College, both in New Jersey. She holds the SHRM-SCP and SPHR certifications.
