1 BASE LOCATION: REPORTING TO: LINE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Islamic Relief Worldwide Communication Content Manger Birmingham, UK, with some international travel (role is expected to include c.25% travel) Head of Publications and Operations Regional Communicators x 3 one already in post, two to be recruited in 2018 PURPOSE OF DIVISION: The External Relations and Advocacy Division is responsible for public communications and external relations for Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) and for supporting and facilitating the communications work of partner and field offices around the world. The division s responsibilities include brand protection and reputation management; external relations; international media relations and advocacy; IRW s website, publications and social media platforms; internal communications; and staff training in key communications disciplines. IRW is an international relief and development charity, which envisages a caring world where people unite to respond to the suffering of others, empowering them to fulfil their potential. Islamic Relief is an independent Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded in the UK in JOB PURPOSE: The Communication Content Manger is responsible for the collection of photographs, footage, project information and case studies from Islamic Relief field offices (IRFOs) and Regional Communications Coordinators; ensuring that this material is edited and stored in a systematic fashion on fit for purpose digital platforms and in shared folders (in collaboration with the Editorial Advisor); regular dissemination/sharing of this material with Islamic Relief partners (IRPs) and key IRW colleagues; and overseeing the support and training of IRFO staff to follow corporate guidelines and standards and deliver high-quality material. The Communication Content Manger plays a pivotal role in providing a bridge between IRFOs and IRPs, IRW communications professionals and the Resource Development Division on the other equipping the IRFOs to meet their communications obligations and thus equipping IRPs and IRW with highquality material for public communications, marketing and fundraising. The role requires sound professional skills and judgment in image selection, videography and video editing, and involves managing activities at IRW while working particularly closely with communications lead staff in IRFOs.

3 o Day-to-day engagement with Head of Publications and Operations and members of the Publications and Operations team; communications lead staff in field offices; Product Development team in Resource Development Division; International Media Coordinator; Social Media Coordinator, Emergency Communications Coordinator. o Line management and day-to-day supervision of Regional Communications Coordinators. o Regular engagement with Humanitarian Advocacy Officer; country desks in International Programmes; communications lead staff of IR partners; External Relations Manager. SCOPE AND AUTHORITY Scope of the Role: The role will involve some international travel, liaising closely with partners and field offices. Responsibility for Resources: This role has significant responsibility for how the work of field offices is communicated, perceived and understood. As such it is a pivotal role in maintaining and communicating the Islamic Relief brand. The Communication Content Manger will hold some budgetary responsibility for the Field Information and Support function, including training, and for the IR Digital content platform. As well as line-managing the Regional Content Curator(s), s/he will from time to time have to work with external agencies and freelances. The FISM line manages three Regional Communications Coordinators covering Africa, Asia and the Middle East and based in those regions. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES The jobholder is accountable for fulfilling his or her role and responsibilities in line with Islamic Relief s values and principles of fairness, humanity, honesty, respect and fair treatment of colleagues and staff. The jobholder will report to the Head of Publications and Operations regularly, on the basis of the IR Global Strategy and annually defined objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs). Area One: Lead communication with and support for communications lead staff in IR field offices (IRFOs) in order to facilitate the delivery of first-class film, photography, case studies and information for use in communications, marketing and fundraising by Islamic Relief partners (IRPs) and by two IRW divisions in particular: External Relations & Advocacy and Network & Resource Development. 1. Communicate regularly and systematically with the communications leads in field offices to ensure a regular and timely supply of material to IRW relating to day-to-day programmes. 2. Direct, manage and monitor the work of Regional Regional Communications Coordinators including project management and writing clear briefs and overseeing video production and/or photography projects. 3. Set and oversee the budget for IRFO support as part of the departmental and divisional planning and budgeting process. 4. Develop guidance, procedures and templates applicable to communications leads in IRFOs and provide advice to ensure that standards and guidelines are

4 followed. 5. Ensure that visual material from both IRFOs and IRPs is efficiently and effectively accessed and shared. 6. Exercise good quality control and editing as far as possible to ensure that video and photographs on IR Digital showcase the work of field offices effectively and provide highquality material that meets corporate standards; liaising with the Editorial Advisor to ensure that stories and case studies provided from IRFOs are also of suitable quality. 7. Communicate regularly with IRP communications leads and colleagues in IRW s External Relations & Advocacy and Network & Resource Development divisions to ensure that they are made aware of all new resources supplied by IRFOs. 8. Identify gaps in induction, support and training of IFRO communication leads and major capacity concerns so that these can be addressed in collaboration with the Head of Publications and Operations and other specialist staff in External Relations & Advocacy. 9. Play a pivotal role in meeting the training needs of communications and other relevant staff in IRFOs through annual global and regional training events and remote platforms. 10. Develop and maintain KPIs to measure and monitor communications delivery by IRFOs and satisfaction levels among clients (IRW departments and IRPs). 11. Set and manage the agenda for three regional monthly meetings for IRFO communications leads: Africa, Asia, and Middle East & Eastern Europe. 12. Commission freelance support, sparingly, when required which is most likely to be in emergencies. Area Two: Continuously monitor, adapt and improve content and technical specification on the IR Digital platform to ensure that it consistently delivers high-quality and timely communications material for IRPs and key IRW teams 1. Lead the overall strategy, implementation and workflow of a digital asset management system, IR Digital, to ensure it continually meets the evolving needs of the organisation. 2. Set and oversee the budget for IR Digital as part of the departmental and divisional planning and budgeting process. 3. Audit current systems and workflows by leading meetings, discussion and training sessions with staff and project working groups. 4. Create and evolve digital asset management capabilities by developing the in-house roadmap focused on streamlining operations, optimised userflows, and permissions. 5. Maintain best practice asset management by identifying and capitalising on relevant trends and innovations in Digital Asset Management technology to constantly improve tools, policies and processes. 6. Procure, develop and ensure the delivery of the successor to IR Digital in due course. 7. Ensure the digital asset library is appropriately structured, maintained and organised to meet the needs of the organisation, with rigorous keyword taxonomy developed, content clearly tagged, search terms enabled, and appropriate metadata assigned for assets to ensure accurate usage rights. 8. Maintain and update IR Digital and any successor product as a content storage and sharing platform, managing traffic and digital asset management (DAM) process and resolving technical problems in coordination with the developers. 9. Train and support DAM users by regularly updating and disseminating user guidelines and

5 providing remote and face to face induction and training sessions as required. 10. Ensure that material from IRFOs and IRPs is comprehensive, accurate, relevant, up to date and prepared to the highest quality standards. 11. Manage requests for expedited images e.g emergency. 12. Work to ensure the long-term storage, organisation, distribution and retrieval of digital assets. Area Three: Support of wider departmental and corporate needs 1. Support the Head of Publications and Operations in providing timely reports and technical advice and in developing plans and budgets relating to field information and support and IR Digital. 2. Deliver miscellaneous small videography, video editing and photography projects for the External Relations & Advocacy division when these are not covered by the core work of the videographer in Network & Resource Development. 3. Contribute to implementation of the overall organisational and divisional strategies, operating in line with key policies and processes. 4. Support delivery on divisional and departmental objectives, monitored through KPIs. 5. Support efficient planning and management of the department s work, with continuous analysis of and adaptation to risks and opportunities. 6. Ensure timely and efficient departmental decision making; sound financial and resource management; assured quality of programmes and services; active and continuous monitoring, evaluating, learning and benchmarking within the department. 7. Communicate effectively and systematically with relevant stakeholders across the organisation and actively support cross-organisational processes. Area Four: Other 1. Help promote and foster a culture in which the Islamic principles, values and approaches adopted by IR are consistently respected, applied and complied with in the delivery of objectives and in the conduct of employees. 2. Maintain own professional development. 3. Comply with IRW s policies and procedures in undertaking roles and responsibilities. 4. Perform other duties incidental to the work described herein. This requires a flexible approach to respond to any work requests from the Head of Publications and Operations at short notice. PERSON SPECIFICATION Experience o Significant experience in communications and/or marketing role(s) in a complex corporation or INGO. o Experience of building, guiding, training and influencing teams to work collaboratively to a high standard o Proven track record as a line manager and project manager, operating within a team with budgetary responsibility and delivering results across a range of

6 activities. o Significant experience of delivering, editing and producing high-quality video and photography. o Experience in operating a range of video hardware, video cameras, tripod, lighting and sound equipment. o Experience in video editing on both PC and Mac editing suites. Knowledge and skills o Exceptional communication skills, particularly in videography and video editing; photography and photo selection/editing. o Demonstrable knowledge of trends and current emerging technologies in digital asset management. o Sound financial and resource management skills that ensure that goals can be achieved within budgetary constraints. o Good working knowledge of current developments in IT applications for storing, sharing and disseminating communications collateral internally and with external audiences. o Specialist knowledge and visual eye for using video cameras and lighting to create highquality material and dramatic effects. o Specialist knowledge and visual eye for using photographic cameras and flash lights to create dramatic effect. o In-depth working knowledge of video and audio production software: Final Cut Pro and the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition and Media Encoder. o IT literate with a command of MS Office applications in particular Outlook, Word, Powerpoint and Excel. o Fluent written and spoken English. Working knowledge of Arabic is significantly advantageous. o Exceptional team-working and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively consult, listen to and influence others as well as the ability to work across different cultures, with personalities who face competing demands. o Strong ability to work calmly under pressure to tight deadlines and balance competing priorities. o Results focused; able to plan, co-ordinate and deliver on objectives and targets with a positive drive to achieve results. o Sound understanding of development and humanitarian work at an international level o Willingness to work autonomously, and take initiative. o Attention to detail. Qualifications o Educated to degree level. o Additional qualification(s) in communications/business operations/it applications would be advantageous. o Qualification in communications or marketing discipline is highly advantageous.
