2 Welcome The ABCUL Annual Conference and AGM is the largest event in the British credit union calendar. It provides the opportunity for credit union board members, staff and volunteers to hear from a wide range of speakers, discuss the issues that are important to them and network with others from the movement. Who should attend? Everyone involved in or with credit unions! This conference offers a programme for people from every size of credit union. It is also a great opportunity for people wanting to learn more about credit unions, their work and their potential. Exhibition The exhibition gives you the opportunity to meet credit union partners and suppliers. Take advantage of a relaxed atmosphere to discuss your credit union s needs with current suppliers and seek new partnerships. Please see the conference programme for opening times. 3 Training ABCUL is delighted to offer a programme of courses aimed at enhancing your conference experience. Our training is developed with the needs of credit unions in mind and is delivered by experienced presenters all of whom are there to help you develop your skills and knowledge. Over the past three years ABCUL has delivered a comprehensive range of courses through the mediums of face to face classroom, virtual learning and self paced and is the leading credit union training provider. Get your training fee reimbursed For this conference only, when you have purchased and attended any one of the training sessions listed below your credit union will receive a reimbursement of 90, the equivalent amount to your training fee. We hope this will assist the credit union in funding training during the year. This is available to ALL delegates from credit unions, study groups and chapters attending conference this year. How does this work? The reimbursement is available for advanced bookings only. On submitting your booking you will receive an entry pass into the course. When you attend the course you must hand in your pass. The pass will then be used as proof of attendance and your credit union will be sent the cash equivalent by cheque or BACS in the weeks following the conference. Remember, the reimbursement is available for advanced bookings only so you should book early as places are strictly limited. No passes will be issued on the day. Who is eligible for the reimbursement? Reimbursements are available to ALL delegates from credit unions, study groups and chapters who attend the training. Please note that reimbursements will only be paid directly to credit unions, study groups or chapters; and not to individuals. Which courses are eligible? Strategic Business Planning Overview Setting the foundations for a successful credit union Strategic Business Planning is key to the central role of directors and managers and drives the credit union forward in its development. This seminar will emphasise the importance of sound strategic planning and the role of strategic management in ensuring effective decision-making in the credit union. Why planning is important for your credit union Benefits and realities of planning Communication Steps in the planning cycle Strategic v tactical planning Budgeting Monitoring and evaluation This course is suitable for directors and senior managers involved in the planning strategy. T2. Improve your Lending Practice Strategies and systems to improve performance Lending is at the core of credit union service and getting lending practice right is important. Managing and developing a successful end to end service and taking a holistic view of lending service and administration leads to efficiencies, cost savings and improved service to members. This course will explore good lending practice and ideas for improving the efficiency of the lending function. The course will explore: The current lending market Effective lending policies The end to end process Efficient procedures This course is suitable for credit union managers and individuals with responsibility for the lending process. 06

7 Friday Course T3. Leadership & Board Development Overview Governance from strength The Board of a credit union is the legally responsible governing body and as such has a role in leading the development of the credit union in a professional and effective way. Vision, communication and leadership is essential to the strategic development of the credit union. This course aims to explore how the board of a credit union can develop into a governing body that demonstrates these and understands what skills and attributes contribute to a strong board of directors. Course content: Governance in the credit union structures, roles and responsibilities Board evaluation Who leads and who manages what? The route from vision to strategy to aims to actions Developing a leadership strategy This course is suitable for board directors and anyone involved in the governance of the credit union. T4. Recruiting & Managing Volunteers Creating an inclusive credit union This one day seminar will explore key issues specific to recruiting and managing volunteers. Whilst much of what is required is standard people management equally relevant to employees, there are particular issues and techniques that can be used when working with volunteers. By the end of this course you will feel able to support and manage credit union volunteers successfully. The course includes: Developing a volunteering strategy and policies Role descriptions and specifications Induction & training Supervision and management Legal issues This course is suitable for credit union managers and individuals with responsibility for the volunteers in the credit union. 07

The Strategic Compliance Function Overview The core of accountability and safety Compliance is at the centre of accountability to members and the efficient protection of members interests. Ensuring that members assets are safeguarded involves developing a system of checks that ensure the credit union is complying with the law, the regulator and the rules. It is the board s responsibility to ensure that a rigorous strategic and operational compliance function is in place. The seminar will aim to reinforce the principles of compliance and explore implementation within the resource constraints of the credit union. Content: The key characteristics of the compliance function The difference between strategic and operational compliance Compliance as a management not a supervisory responsibility The five key areas and tasks of the compliance function. Coordination of compliance areas Developing an understanding of resources, timetables & tools This course is suitable for credit union managers, board members and compliance officers. 08

9 Workshops Workshop Session 1 Saturday Workshop Session 2 Saturday W1. The New Common Bond Regime When the law changes, the way that credit unions define their membership will change, and will allow much more flexibility. This workshop will explain how the new regime will work and help delegates understand how to combine different groups in membership. W2. Back Office Developing Services What do you want ABCUL to develop? Centralising services through a Back Office can bring a wider range of services and economies of scale to credit union operations. Hear about how ABCUL s Back Office project is progressing and feed in your ideas on what would benefit your credit union. W3. Financial Capability Having the knowledge, skills and confidence to make good financial decisions is important to us all. This workshop will introduce direct delegates to information and resources that they can use to help their members gain these important life skills. W4. Reforming Debt Solutions in Scotland The Scottish Government is reforming the Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) and reviewing the operation of Trust Deeds. What will the new-look DAS mean for credit unions and what changes do you want to see to Trust Deeds? W5. Back Office Developing Services (repeat) What do you want ABCUL to develop? Centralising services through a Back Office can bring a wider range of services and economies of scale to credit union operations. Hear about how ABCUL s Back Office project is progressing and feed in your ideas on what would benefit your credit union. W6. All Change Policy Update What are the main changes facing credit unions from Government and Regulator policy proposals? Find out what ABCUL s policy team is working on and feed in your ideas for responses and priorities. W7. Debt Recovery Options (England and Wales) A general introduction and discussion about the options credit unions have to recover debts from members living in England and Wales W8. Provision of affordable credit across Greater London Paul Jones from Liverpool John Moores University, in collaboration with Policis, has recently completed a comprehensive research project on the provision of affordable credit in London, funded by Santander. The major part of the study concerned the development of credit unions in the capital. Find out about the research and discuss the recommendations contained in the report, many of which are just as relevant for credit unions across Britain. 09

10 Workshops Workshop Session 3 Sunday W9. Big Society big opportunity? What does the Big Society and the Localism Bill actually mean, for credit unions and for the communities in which we work? What opportunities are there for our sector and are there any threats that we need to be aware of? W10. Merging credit unions learning from the North Wales Project One of the largest mergers of credit unions ever in Britain has recently taken place in North Wales, bringing together 5 credit unions. Learn about how this happened and how the lessons learnt can help your credit union. W11. Debt Recovery Options Scotland A general introduction and discussion about the options credit unions have to recover debts from members living in Scotland. 10
