17 ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING HANDSHAKE Handshake is the University of North Florida s new online career management system. This summer the Coggin Career Management Center along with the other career centers at UNF began the process of transitioning employers and students to this innovative career platform. The decision to move to Handshake was a result of an 18-month evaluation process completed by an advisory group of employers, students, staff, and campus partners. UNF joined a network of over 500 universities utilizing Handshake, including schools such as Florida State University, University of South Florida, University of West Florida, University of Central Florida, University of Georgia, Princeton, and many more. Benefits for Employers An easy interface for employers to track their recruiting activities across all Handshake member universities Post positions and manage applications Powerful applicant filtering options Direct Student Messaging Schedule interviews through the On-Campus Interview program Register for upcoming fairs and events Additional technical support 15
18 ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING INTERNSHIPS Internships provide employers with the opportunity to recruit new talent, gain a new perspective, increase productivity, and enhance the local workforce. The process of creating an internship does not have to be overwhelming or complicated. Below are guidelines to remember when your organization is designing or evaluating an internship program. Recruit the best talent Post in Handshake two-three months in advance of the position start date. Provide detailed information in the internship posting. Connect with the Internship Coordinator. Build Your Brand. Participate in on-campus recruiting activities such as the Coggin to Career Week and the mock interview program. Provide meaningful work assignments and experiences Internships should provide students with the opportunity to learn more about the career field and experience the culture of an organization. Provide clear expectations at the beginning of the internship. Provide the intern with the opportunity to work on tasks and projects that will yield both tangible and intangible evidence of their work. Allow interns to participate in orientation sessions, job shadowing, or rotate assignments. Provide students with supervision/mentorship Interns are expected to make contributions to the organization, however they are students and are still learning. To attract and retain the best interns, provide them with projects that make them feel challenged and supported. Establish learning objectives, provide structured activities and assignments, and be willing to give constructive feedback regarding the student s work throughout the internship. Offer Compensation and/or benefits One of the benefits of hiring an intern is that the organization can do it for so much less than a full-time or part-time employee. A majority of internships offer a competitive hourly pay rate or a set amount for the semester (stipend). Coggin College of Business students must be paid in order to receive academic credit for their internship. Be open to improvement Creating a successful internship program does take practice and trial and error. It is important to obtain feedback from all parties, especially the student intern. A good internship program is adaptable to the changing needs of the organization while also providing the intern with a valuable experience. 16
19 COGGIN ELITE PROGRAM S.T.A.R. PROGRAM The S.T.A.R. Program is a professional development program designed specifically for Coggin College of Business students. The program s focus is on helping students advance their careers through the development of employability and networking skills. To become S.T.A.R. Certified, students must complete all 5 S.T.A.R.S; this can be done over the course of multiple semesters. S.T.A.R. 1 Résumé Writing Workshop Students will learn how to create their résumé to stand out from the rest, and how to draft an effective cover letter. S.T.A.R. 2 Interviewing & Job Search Workshop Students will learn how to prepare for an interview, the different interview styles and types, how to follow-up and other resources that can help them succeed. Students will also learn how to develop planned, multi-faceted approach to finding jobs. S.T.A.R. 3 Résumé Critique Students can have their resumes and cover letter (optional) reviewed by the Career Management Center, and receive personalized feedback on how to improve their documents. S.T.A.R. 4 Upload Your Résumé to Handshake Once resumes have been professionally critiqued, students can upload it to Handshake allowing recruiters to view. S.T.A.R. 5 Mock Interview Business Professionals participate in practice interviews to give students feedback on their interviewing skills. If you are interested in volunteering for the Mock Interviews, please contact Melinda Santo, m.santos@unf.edu, for interview dates and times. 17
