Drive faster and more balanced economic growth The strategic challenge is to improve the capacity of UK entrepreneurs and enterprises to create innovative products and services, increase wealth and employment and rebalance the economy in favour of productive industry. Lead the profession The strategic challenge is to harness the collective expertise, energy and capacity of the engineering profession to enhance the UK s economic and social development. Foster better education and skills The strategic challenge is to create a system of engineering education and training that satisfies the aspirations of young people while delivering the high calibre engineers and technicians that businesses need. Promote engineering at the heart of society The strategic challenge is to improve public understanding of engineering, increase awareness of how engineering impacts on lives and increase public recognition for our most talented engineers. This is a particularly busy and exciting time for the Academy. A 6.5m refurbishment of the Academy s building has just been completed and this impressive facility is becoming the centre for engineering in the UK. The Academy also recently announced the winner of the first Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, an international biennial prize of 1m that recognises excellence in engineering around the world.

5 Role Profile Job Title: Policy Advisor Directorate: Reports to: Policy and Public Affairs Head of Policy Responsible for: Developing policy reports and responding to consultations; building and managing relationships with Fellows and other stakeholders Overall Aim To build the Academy s policy influence within parliament, government, industry and the policy community so that engineering advice is used and valued through all stages of the policy development process. Key Responsibilities 1. Working within the policy team to produce high quality engineering advice in the form of policy reports, workshops, events and responses to consultations 2. Building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, including Academy Fellows, the science and engineering policy community, business and industry Key Results 1. The publication of policy work that has measurable influence in Parliament and Government, and which achieves positive media exposure 2. The development of relationships with external stakeholders, who either benefit from, or contribute to Academy work. 3. Development of a public profile in the science and engineering policy field, as a member of the Academy s policy team

7 Role Profile Job Title: Directorate: Reports to: Policy Advisor, Research Programmes & Fellowship Director of Programmes & Fellowship Overall Aim To develop and deliver Academy policy advice on research, innovation and entrepreneurship, under the guidance of the Director of Programmes & Fellowship and the relevant Academy committees. Key Responsibilities 1. To develop the Academy s research policy programme, in consultation with the Director of Programmes & Fellowship and liaising with counterparts in the Engineering Policy, Research & University Programmes, Enterprise, International and Education teams. 2. To produce high quality advice on research & innovation policy in the form of reports, workshops, events and responses to consultations. 3. To produce policy advice of relevance to engineering and technologybased entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the Enterprise Hub team and the Enterprise Committee. 4. To maintain awareness and knowledge of key policy issues of relevance to engineering research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the UK and to act as an internal advisor on these topics. 5. To build and maintain strong relationships with Academy Fellows and external stakeholders, including in Government and the research, entrepreneurial and business communities, to enable the effective development and delivery of policy advice. 6. To work with colleagues across the Academy to communicate and promote key policy positions. 7. To contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in the department and to support the Director of Programmes & Fellowship in achieving other team and departmental objectives. Key Results 1. Delivery of policy advice and associated influencing activities that enhance the Academy s reputation and have a demonstrable impact. 2. Strong working relationships with all key stakeholders including staff, Fellows and beneficiaries. 3. Effective representation of the Academy and its policy work in the public domain

9 Terms and Conditions of Employment (For information purposes only) Position Policy Advisors x 2 Full time hours per week Location 3 Carlton House Terrace London SW1Y 5 DG Remuneration c 31k per annum Hours of work 9.15 am 5.30 pm Flexible working hours The Academy operates a flexitime system which does not include clocking on and off at the beginning and end of each working day, however, timesheets are required to be completed. Provided that the core hours of 10.00am to 4.00pm are worked, flexibility is available in respect of the start and finish times. This flexibility is subject to the following conditions: Minimum of 7.25 hours per day must be worked. Flexible hours must be mutually agreed between the employee and the departmental director. Flexible hours may be subject to review by the departmental director at any time. A 30 minutes lunch break is allocated during each day. Holidays 25 days holiday per annum as well as the normal bank holidays. This entitlement will increase by one day per year of service to a maximum of 30 working days. Other Sick Pay entitlement Sick pay entitlement is eight weeks full pay followed by 18 weeks at half pay. Income protection If you are medically unfit and unable to return to work after 26 weeks, at the Academy s discretion, you will benefit from the Academy s Group Income

10 Protection Scheme that will pay an amount equivalent to 50% of gross salary. This benefit is available after 6 months qualifying service. Pension Contributory Group Personal Pension Scheme is available to all staff after successful completion of the probationary period. The Academy will contribute an amount equivalent to 10% of gross salary providing the individual contributes 3% of gross salary. Season ticket loan An interest free loan is available to employees after successful completion of probationary period. Medical insurance Private medical healthcare (BUPA) is available to all staff after two years service. Other health care benefits Free annual eye tests for all staff after successful completion of the probationary period. A comprehensive range of benefits (dental, optician etc.) under Health Additions is available to all staff after two years service. Death in service Staff who have completed their probationary period are eligible to become members of the Group Life Assurance Scheme. In the event of the death of a member of staff covered by the scheme, the scheme will pay an amount equivalent to four times annual salary to a nominated next of kin. Childcare vouchers Operated through Faircare. Available to all staff after successful completion of probationary period. Ride to work The opportunity to purchase a bike through a salary sacrifice agreement, saving tax and National Insurance on the value of the bike. Available to all staff after successful completion of probationary period.
