7 Basic Assumptions There is no one right way to write a resume but there are generally accepted guidelines The only wrong resume is one that is not truthful and accurate Effective resumes appeal to the reader are written clearly and succinctly are error free

16 Sample Objectives A co-op position in the field of Materials Science. A mechanical engineering position where knowledge of engineering, applied physics, and mathematics will be an asset. Seek a position as an analyst of financial and production problems utilizing operations research and industrial engineering techniques.

19 Experience Include paid and unpaid positions - anything that helped build qualifications for the position For each position, include 1) the name of the organization, 2) the location 3) title 4) dates of employment 5) accomplishments, skills developed/used

20 Sample Experience section Technology Consultant Intern Summer 2008 Denali Business Systems, Girdwood, AK Assisted customers with technology questions on a daily basis. Coordinated on-site service calls to customers with problems that could not be solved via telephone or communication. -- or WAUSAU PUBLIC SCHOOLS, Wausau, WI Volunteer Teacher Winter 2007 Taught seventh grade level math to underprivileged kids ages thirteen to fourteen. Prepared lesson plans each week for twelve students.

21 Good descriptions should Tell what was accomplished (not what was done) Start with an action verb Demonstrate results Let accomplishment show skill Quantify as much as possible Be honest (do not exaggerate or sell short)

22 Sample Accomplishment Statements Led and managed a team of six programmers in developing simulation software for counter terrorism training. Reduced training costs by an estimated $20,000 annually. Awarded a $2000 prize in the 2005 Army Work Improvement Competition. Conducted experiments involving 600 people and analyzed the data to assist in formulating new counter terrorism doctrines.

24 Formatting Neat and easy to read Use a conservative font (e.g., Arial, Times) Between 10 and 12 pt Maintain at least ½-inch borders Use white space Use bold and italics for emphasis and readability

25 Formatting (cont.) Place items of greatest importance closer to the top and the left margin Maintain consistency with spacing, punctuation, etc. List education and experiences reversechronologically within each category

26 Final Thoughts/Highlights Base resume set up according to resume s focus List qualifications in an appealing format based on importance Highlight skills and abilities by demonstrating them in accomplishments Stick away from Word templates Proofread!
