1 The Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa Professional Certificate in Organization Development International competition, technological and organizational change, and high-performance business capability: today s organizational challenge is to manage limited resources in the face of these opportunities and threats. Professionals are needed who can consult to leaders through difficult choices and drive actions toward valued goals. Organizations need people who know more than team building they need professionals capable of facilitating strategic change, fluent in designing globalized interventions, and experienced in organizational and job designs that are both productive and satisfying. The Telfer School of Management s Professional Certificate in Organization Development is designed to provide practitioners, managers, and consultants with the skills and understanding necessary to effectively address complex organizational demands. The program focuses on increasing the ability of participants to develop solutions that balance organizational profitability, short and long-term business effectiveness, and quality of life in organizational settings. Our particular focus is on the current dynamics and needs of management within European Union countries, taking into consideration the particular cultural requirements of management in the region. Our Mission The Telfer School of Management s Professional Certificate in Organization Development program prepares leaders in the art and science of managing strategic change and inspires the OD professional to use rigor in their approach to organization interventions. Our overall approach focuses on the role OD practitioners play in improving organization performance and realizing human potential. Our goal focuses on the development of professional skills of program participants to achieve those ends. The program's unique approach and process integrates theory with practice, classroom sessions with back-home application throughout the program, and organizational development skills with personal growth and development.

2 Learning Outcomes Increased Knowledge of the systemic nature of leadership and management theory and practice of OD consultation consulting behaviours effective organization change practice organization design for high performance systems processes of conflict resolution and negotiation impact of organization culture and organizational norms processes of creative thinking applied to management and organizational settings the theory and application of modern strategic Human Resource Management principles and practice in high performing organizations Increased Skills in consulting effectively to managers as either internal or external OD / HRM resources coaching organizational managers and leaders in appropriate long term OD strategy use of appropriate negotiation and conflict resolution strategies effective communications processes in organizations building and leading effective high-performing teams and working effectively in team-based environments building effective alliances around desired organizational outcomes thinking and acting strategically in the role of organizational consultant Who Should Attend The Telfer School of Management s Professional Certificate in Organization Development is designed primarily for the following audience: Senior managers and executives with responsibility for the planning and execution of strategic organization change; Directors of human resource management (HRM) functions in corporations undergoing significant organization change; and Professional OD and HRM consultants (both internal and external) engaged in consultancy related to the planning and implementation of organization change processes.

3 Program Structure and Content The Professional Certificate in Organization Development goes beyond textbook learning and theory. The program is designed to support the ongoing work of participants by providing a number of action-focused learning sessions stretched over a one year learning period. The curriculum of the program is divided into six three-day sessions, each with a clearly focused set of deliverables and content areas. It should be noted that, where programs are focused on in-company groups, the sequencing of these modules may be modified to maximize the relevance of the program to participants. Session 1: The World of the Organization: Understanding the System and Its Players This session with examine the elements of organization reality based on the congruency model of organizational analysis. Participants will develop a systems view of the organization, come to understand how the critical elements of an organization fit together, the critical roles of managers in leading and managing organizations, and the role of HR and OD in supporting operational managers and employees. The role of the support functions of an organization are highlighted in this session, as well as design strategies to deal with the pressures of operations and functional departments to work together in support of organizational goals. Session 2: Modern Human Resource Management Practice in High Performing Organizations and its approach in OD Consulting This session will focus on the evolving role of HR practitioners as strategic rather than operational organizational support. Organizational systems related to HR practice are examined and the multiple potential roles available to HR /OD consultants are explored. A diagnostic framework is used to help participants understand the roles of OD and HR within High-Performance (HP) as opposed to more static organizational systems. Skills associated with HP systems will be explored through case study and simulation activity. Session 3: Modern OD Practice Past and Current Best Practice This session provides an overview of OD practice, introducing participants to the OD Implementation Cube, best practices of OD both historical and current, and high-performance OD principles. Participants will complete an OD Professional Practitioner Profile and receive feedback on strengths and areas for development. Significant psychometric instrumentation will be used in this session, both for immediate debrief and to set the stage for future session review.

4 Program Structure and Content (cont d) Session 4: Effective Consultation Skills Practice This session focuses on the skills and dynamics of effective consultation processes. Focus is on developing effective understanding of the consultant s role, effective consultation skills, and frameworks for consulting assignment analysis. Behaviours and ethics of consultation is covered as well as traps consultants encounter in their roles. The process of this session focuses on developing a group consulting assignment within participant organizations to test out and push learning of the materials. Session 5: Organization Design and Organization Effectiveness: an OD consulting perspective This session outlines the evolving systems of organization design available to support the new generation of organizations. Socio-Technical System (STS) analysis is introduced as a critical analysis tool. Participants will be training in STS implementation through analysis of one or a number of external organization divisional systems, with final reports being produced for operating managers. Multiple definitions of Organization Effectiveness are examined within the context of organizational strategy. Session 6: Effective Practitioner Skills: Change Management, Conflict Resolution, Negotiation, and Creative Problem Solving and their use as an approach in OD Consulting This session is focused on development of critical practitioner skills related to engaging organizational members in change initiatives. Frameworks for analyzing, strategizing, and implementing change are discussed and practiced through use of an organization-based simulation. Employee engagement skills associated with conflict resolution and negotiation using the Harvard Negotiation Process will be introduced and practiced through case study and role-play examples. A preferred model of problem-solving will be examined and used to build on current levels of problem solving models used by participants. Application of Theory Program Action Focus Throughout the program, students will be required to apply the theory covered in their in-class sessions within their own companies. Each session reviews participant organizational interventions and uses this direct experience as a stepping stone to more refined knowledge and skill.

5 Program Schedule The program is designed to be highly practical in nature. As a result, classroom sessions are delivered on a monthly basis to allow for application of assignments and activities in the workplace. The schedule for delivery for the 2008 cohort is as follows: Session 1 January 18 20, 2008 (Bucharest) Session 2 February 22 24, 2008 (Bucharest) Session 3 April 18 20, 2008 (Bucharest) Session 4 May 16 18, 2008 (Bucharest) Session 5 June 20 22, 2008 (Bucharest) Session 6 August 15 17, 2008 (Ottawa, Canada) Program Cost Each three-day session is priced at 1,250 (exclusive of VAT). Total price for the program is 7,500 (exclusive of VAT). Participants can enrol in the total program or choose one or more modules as they see fit for maximal benefits to them. Participants who enrol in the total program will have the expenses of their trip to Ottawa Canada covered by the program (reservations will be made and paid for by the program). Those enrolling in individual sessions may still attend the session in Ottawa but will be responsible for their expenses related to the trip. The Telfer School of Management s Professional Certificate in Organization Development will be awarded to participants who have successfully completed all six sessions.

6 Program Faculty Dr. Michael Miles Michael Miles is a Canadian organization change consultant and professor based in Ottawa. He grew up in Canada but has lived and worked extensively in Asia and Europe. He completed his doctoral degree in Human and Organization Systems at the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara and holds two Masters Degrees in Organization Development. Dr. Miles has consulted extensively in the high technology, petroleum, and specialty manufacturing sectors. In addition to multiple North American clients, Romanian clients have included AVIVA, Connex, Alvirion, Vodafone and Coca-Cola. Other international clients include the China National Petroleum Corporation, Xinhua Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Xing Ping Petro-Chemical Plant Shaanxi (China), and Daqing Gas Corporation (China), Alcatel (Canada and China), the World Bank, Petroleum Authority of Thailand, Thai Ministry of Interior, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. Dr. Miles currently teaches organization change and international management practice at the University of Ottawa and the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai. For relaxation he flies small planes. Chris O Gorman Chris O Gorman is currently the Director of Learning and OD at Alcatel Canada as well as the Director of Alcatel University for North America. Chris is based out of Ottawa, Canada, but consults and trains extensively in the United States, Canada, and Europe. He holds a Master s Degree in Human Systems Intervention from Concordia University in Montreal and numerous professional training designations. Chris has trained and consulted widely in the high-tech and food sectors. Clients have included Alcatel Canada and Europe, March Networks, Zarlink Semiconductors, City of Ottawa, Mitel Corporation, and numerous departments of the Canadian Government.
