2 Mary s Meals a simple solution to world hunger Mary s Meals provides one good meal to some of the world s poorest children in a place of education every school day. It is a global movement supported by people from many walks of life and different backgrounds. We have become known as the charity that operates out of a tin shed. As an organization working in some of the world s poorest communities, we re committed to keeping our running costs low to maximize the good we can do with the donations entrusted to us. At most, we spend just 7 cents in every dollar donated on fundraising, management and administration. This is only possible because most of our work is done by an army of volunteers in our fundraising countries and in the communities where we work, who carry out lots of little acts of love on our behalf. Hunger kills millions of children each year. It also stunts their growth and their dreams. Hungry children think about survival, not about going to school around 59 million of the world s hungriest children do not attend school. These life-changing meals attract hungry children into the classroom. The food fills their empty bellies so they have the energy and opportunity to learn, giving them the chance of a brighter future. The meals also support families struggling to feed their children while boosting the country s wider economy. Mary's Meals is now feeding over one million of the world s poorest children every day they attend school. It costs just $19.50 to feed a child for a whole year. 1

3 Mary s Meals International Mary s Meals International is the central organization which co-ordinates, supports and leads the global Mary s Meals movement, under the direction of the founder and Chief Executive and through the work of three global directorates: Programs, Finance and Operations, and Communications and Fundraising. The global Mary s Meals movement currently consists of eleven registered charity affiliates in Austria, Canada, Croatia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the USA, raising funds to support life-changing programs in Benin, Burma, Ecuador, Haiti, India, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, South Sudan, Thailand, Uganda and Zambia. Mary s Meals USA The organizational structure showing the current structure in Mary s Meals USA is below: Executive Director MMUSA Operations & Finance Manager (New Jersey Office) Outreach & Fundraising Coordinator (Kentucky) Grassroots Fundraising Coordinator (Part-time, Iowa) Head of Communications (New York) Finance & Operations Team (2 x New Jersey Office) Purpose of the role Reporting to Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, President of MMUSA Board of Directors / CEO of Mary s Meals International, and the Board of MMUSA, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the growth and development of Mary s Meals USA and associated staff teams across fundraising, communications and operations functions. Expansion of the donor base and the consistent delivery of Mary s Meals mission, strategic objectives and financial goals. The Executive Director will oversee all aspects of Mary s Meals USA including: 1

4 Principal duties Strategy Working with the Board and CEO to develop and implement a sustainable growth strategy to ensure the organization can achieve its mission and objectives whilst adhering to its values. Develop and maintain strategic partnerships within the Mary s Meals global movement and with USA external partners to enable growth and sustainability. Fundraising To lead in the development and delivery of fundraising strategies for the USA. To be responsible for maintaining and growing annual revenue. To develop and support a grassroots movement involving a large number of volunteers covering the whole of the USA. To be a credible and compelling spokesperson for Mary s Meals. To oversee and develop relationships with major donors, grant-giving bodies and government agencies. Communications Work closely with Mary s Meals International to develop and implement Mary s Meals USA communications and media strategy. To ensure an effective schedule of regular communications with all supporters. To develop and implement key awareness and fundraising campaigns within and across the USA. To develop and implement an internal communications strategy for MMUSA staff, linked with MMI s internal communications strategy for global staff and affiliates. Finance, Operations and Organizational Development To be responsible for the organization s solvency, stability and growth. Working with the Finance and Operations Manager, develop and manage annual budget, monitor variances, make sound financial decisions to protect the organization s assets and ensure financial and charitable statutory and regulatory compliance. To develop and maintain donor management / CRM systems and processes. Provide the board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organization. Oversee the implementation of human resource policies, procedures and practices that fit with the Mary s Meals global model. To lead, coach, mentor, retain and recruit a talented and dispersed team within USA, including volunteers. To build and maintain an organizational culture of collaboration and innovation. Board Relations To serve as the primary liaison to MMUSA Board of Directors. To ensure the Board receives accurate and timely information to fulfil their governance role. To facilitate board involvement in fundraising. To work with the Board Chair and Board President / MMI CEO in managing board recruitment and ongoing board development. 2

5 Qualifications A relevant degree is desirable but requires significant senior management experience in a growing organization, preferably within a charitable fundraising environment. Skills Essential: Strong leadership and management skills Advanced and well-developed inter-personal skills, with solid track record in persuading and influencing others Demonstrable skills in establishing, developing and nurturing collaborative relationships at all levels Engaging and inspiring written and oral communication skills Highly strategic in outlook, with the ability to analyze, interpret and use data to plan for the future Experience in revenue generation Desirable: Charity management and fundraising expertise Knowledge of International Development Experience Essential: Senior leadership experience Team management experience, including leading, engaging and motivating a team of staff Relationship management of senior stakeholders, donor relations, key accounts or similar high level engagements Public speaking Experience of developing, monitoring and reporting against agreed strategy Experience of representing an organization to key stakeholders Experience of revenue generation or fundraising Desirable: Experience of working in a charity or not for profit organization Contact us Find out more about Mary s Meals at: and Follow Mary s Meals on Twitter and Facebook. 3
