Context of Work More than 100,000 people in the UK have MS, more than 2 million worldwide. We offer hope for the future by investing in research, and help for today through our information, support and campaigning. People with MS guide our work. Our volunteers and supporters shape our research programme through our Research Network, help us provide support locally through our branches and groups and help us write our publications. Our paid staff also provide information and support services to people affected by MS, work with scientists and healthcare professionals and raise funds in four national offices and communities across the UK. With branches in every part of the UK the Society s work has inspired thousands of volunteers, supporters and staff members to make a difference to the lives people affected by MS. Purpose To deliver income at or above the agreed budget level from Major Donor relationships and activities as per the annual budget and business plan To provide management and direction for the Major Donor Fundraising activities across the MS Society To establish and keep the MS Society at the forefront of UK fundraising from individuals giving high value gifts at UK, national and local levels, 1
2 To manage the provision of a range of cases for support for restricted income opportunities from individuals especially for Research To manage the operational delivery of the department As a member of the Fundraising Management Team, to contribute to the leadership, planning and policy formulation of the Directorate as a whole As a member of the management community of MS Society to influence and implement the Society s direction of travel to meet our organisational objectives Key Relationships: Internal: The post holder works closely with all areas of the Society and with all departments especially Executive group and other home team members (usually technical specialists) Fundraising staff across the MS Society working to a common income goal Finance for budget reporting Prospect research function on the preparation of donor profiles Marketing and Communications Support and Services staff for cases for support on our work and impact Policy and Research for cases for support on our work and impact in service development External: The post holder will also liaise with the following groups: Individual donors Our trustees and Appeal Board members Individuals with influence including CEO, Chairmen, politicians etc Lead technical specialists in research, support and services Organisations with whom we may make joint applications for funding Other fundraising peers to understand trends and best practice Key Accountabilities: The MS Society Major Donor Fundraising Manager will support delivery of the Society s Fundraising Directorate strategy to deliver the MS Society s strategic goals by: 1. Business plan implementation 1a Lead and implement an organisation wide strategy for high value individual giving 1b Operational leadership of function across the Society 1c Work alongside individual supporters to raise income 2. People management 3. Financial management 4. Monitoring and reporting on performance General Key competencies 2

Detailed Responsibilities: 1. Business plan implementation 75% Generating income from Major Donor audiences Planning and allocating work, monitoring achievement of deadlines, and supporting staff as appropriate Focussing the work of the team to implement business plans and contribute to the achievement of the Society s strategic aims and priorities Ensuring a clear focus on driving improvements in quality, impact and performance 1a Implement an organisation wide major donor fundraising strategy to generate income (10%) Review, develop and implement the Society s UK wide strategy for fundraising from high net worth individuals and their networks, in line with the Society s overall strategy Review and develop through improvement and innovation the Society s offerings to high level individuals Seek continuous improvements to the quality and output of the MS Society s UK-wide major donor fundraising programme taking account of strategic decisions; the requirements of our funders; legislative changes, trends in funding and best practice 3
4 Develop quality standards for major donor fundraising taking account of best practice and the organisation s quality standards and ensure these standards are met 1b.Operational leadership of function across the Society (15%) Deliver income from the Major Donor audiences and activities at or above the agreed budget level from activities within the major donor strategy Be the leading authority in major donor fundraising proposals and opportunities, providing advice on the strategy, to the Head of Partnership Fundraising, Appeal Director and Executive Director including development proposals for new individuals, and trends in income generation. Prepare and implement a high value donor recognition programme which welcomes, engages, asks, thanks and engages again our high level individual donors Prepare and implement a range of engagement events which draw in and engage potential major donors, their networks and friends Support the Appeal Director with proposals, draft communications, meeting notes and other collateral which enables the Appeal Board to function 1c.Working alongside donors and supporters to inspire their giving and generate income (50%) To be personally responsible for managing the relationships with, and securing funding from, those individuals capable at giving at the highest levels with a personal account management target agreed during business planning Using market research, prospect research and insight to identify new individuals with propensity to give, drive the preparation of donor profiles and themes for their support Promote diversity and inclusion through a range of funding opportunities and products with and for people affected by MS Ensure guidance and support is available through the Supporter Engagement team for informal fundraising groups with respect to local major donor relationship building and applications Manage and respond to complaints in line with the Society s policies and procedures and reviewing practice Undertake speaking engagements and be a spokesperson for the Society on fundraising from individual donors internally and externally where appropriate People Management 10% Managing performance and development, through regular feedback, supervision, supporting learning and the Performance development review process 4
5 Recruiting and inducting new staff. Developing and maintaining effective working relationships across the team, department, directorate and Society. Budget Management 5% Accountable for the efficient management of team expenditure including supporting the Head of Partnership Fundraising in effective budget preparation, planning, monitoring and review Ensure effective financial and resource management Ensure the impact of the department s work is measured in financial terms as return on investment and life time values, and in other ways in accordance with the MS Society s policies/procedures/outcome measurement strategy Monitoring and Reporting on Performance 10% Accountable for the analysis and evaluation of the teams work performance information, monitoring and reporting against objectives, outcomes and KPIs. Ensuring action is taken in a timely manner to enable corrective action to be taken Preparing reports for the Head of Partnership Fundraising on the opportunities available for major donor fundraising Ensuring the impact of the teams work is measured in accordance with the MS Society s outcomes framework General Compliance with MSS s governance procedures, MSS policies and guidelines. Contribute to a positive working environment in which equality and diversity are valued and staff are enabled to do their best. Acting as project manager as required and contributing to relevant programmes and projects. Providing advice to the Executive Director on major donor fundraising matters including new ways of giving, tax rules, giving trends and new opportunities. Other Duties To be prepared to travel to meetings across the UK and be away from home overnight, as the job reasonably demands To undertake any other works as could be expected of a Major Donor Fundraising Manager Person Specification Qualifications A level qualification or A relevant, recognised professional qualification or 5
6 Relevant professional experience, which demonstrates equivalent skills (especially literacy, numeracy, report writing) Evidence of continuous professional development. Experience Proven experience of developing, communicating and implementing programmes of activity and 3 year business plans to prepare, present, win and report on major donor fundraising opportunities Proven experience of success in securing and managing six figure, multi-year gifts from major donor relationships Proven planning and project management experience to control effective use of resources A proven track record of success in leading and managing a team of comparable size and complexity, to deliver high quality results to deadlines Experience of working in a senior team to develop, communicate and implement business plan Experience of working with CEO and senior directors in the FTSE 100 companies Experience of applying effective problem solving techniques when the situation demands Demonstrable experience of impact reporting, use of evidence in applications and financial reporting Demonstrable experience of financial and budgetary management Knowledge and skills Demonstrable evidence of up-to-date knowledge of best practice and new initiatives concerning major donor giving and tax affairs Exceptional ability to interpret, analyse and adapt highly complex information demonstrating how proposals meet individuals personal interests and giving requirements (includes numeracy) Exceptional high level interpersonal skills, and able to influence/persuade a wide range of stakeholders Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in a wide range of media and audiences Detailed knowledge and understanding of the requirements and motivations of individual high level donors when making stretching gifts Experience of the issues facing organisations that work with people affected by a health condition, and those who know them The ability to focus on impact and deliver outstanding results in a team environment Evidence of ability to undertake complex negotiations on behalf of the Society with high level individuals, and with colleagues to deliver on different partnerships and opportunities Demonstrable commitment to responding in a timely and appropriate way to those high level individuals working 24/7 in a global environment Demonstrable commitment to collaborative team work 6
