6 Integrity. Optimism. Compassion. Adaptability. About Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence is the ability to use emotions effectively; it includes emotional awareness and management, and leads to healthy and successful relationships at work, school, and home. Since Peter Salovey and John Mayer published their seminal research defining this intelligence in 1990, a world-wide movement has emerged. Drawing on the work of Salovey, Mayer, and other researchers, Daniel Goleman published Emotional Intelligence in 1995; Goleman now has over 5 million books in print translated to 30 languages. The Harvard Business Review calls emotional intelligence a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea their 1995 article on the subject is the journal s most requested reprint in history. Leaders in business and education are seeing how the hard science of this breakthrough approach improves performance Some of the EQ applications in business that have increased revenues are: increased sales performance through recruiting and training more emotionally intelligent salespeople. improved customer service through recruiting higher EQ customer service reps. Customer Satisfaction % Revenue +52.8% 7.00 Business Results FY2002 and FY $235m $359m EQ + 50% superior leadership performance by developing and recruiting for executive EQ. continues... When the General Services Administration Region 3 committed to emotional intelligence development, they experienced signifi cant business improvement. Source: Joshua Freedman, Emotional Intelligence and World- Class Performance at the General Services Administration (Philadelphia Region), Institute for Organizational performance, Don t miss it! June 12-14, 2005 NexusEQ.com It is very important to understand that emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence, it is not the triumph of heart over head it is the unique intersection of both. David Caruso, Ph.D. Author, The Emotionally Intelligent Manager Egmond aan Zee, Holland (near Amsterdam, on the North Sea) Hotel Zuiderduin June 12-14, 2005 Details and online registration: NexusEQ.com 2005 Six Seconds ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
7 Hope. Inspiration. Effectiveness. Team. Learning. Emotional intelligence can liberate the human potential. Rather than unconscious reactions, defensiveness, and ego, EQ offers a chance for personal mastery, connection, hope, and true strength. This remarkable science gives us powerful insight into ourselves and others, and offers a roadmap to transformational learning. Joshua Freedman, Chair, NexusEQ Conferences I thought it was awesome. Great speakers, well organized and planned, smoothly run, high energy. It was everything I expected and more. - Mark Broder (Manager) Joseph E. Zins, Roger P. Weissberg, Mary Utne OʼBrien, Links Between Safe School Environments and Academic Achievement CASEL 2003 Educators are finding similar compelling results. In schools, emotional intelligence is promoting: improved classroom relationships by promoting dialogue and respect. increased achievement by allowing students to solve problems and focus on learning. enhanced motivation by helping teachers understand what engages students, and by teaching children to motivate themselves. Bolstered by the compelling data that soft skills produce hard results, some leaders are taking the challenge to create more robust, vigorous organizations and schools -- not through bricks and mortar, but by investing in people. In an era of unprecedented challenge, these skills matter like never before. In the words of Doug Lennick, VP of American Express Financial Advisors, emotional intelligence is the breakthrough ingredient for leaders committed to sustainable success: Emotional competence is the single most important personal quality that each of us must develop and access to experience a breakthrough Six Seconds ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
