1 2017 Vice President Finance & Operations Job Description Job Position Title: Reports to: Filled By: Vice President Finance & Operations Chief Executive Officer TBD Job Purpose and Function: The Vice President Finance & Operations provides a unique leadership opportunity to take a thriving nonprofit organization engaged in transformational work to a new level of impact and expansion. With 40 years of proven success in creating dynamic partnerships and education focused on safe and fair pretrial justice practices, our innovative collaborative approach is setting the standard for an impactful shift in how our nation s pretrial justice systems function. The Vice President Finance & Operations is responsible for ensuring PJI is operating optimally as a nonprofit organization and that it is able, through infrastructure and available assets, to achieve its strategic goals and mission. The Vice President Finance & Operations will deepen a fast-paced, mission-driven culture of integrity, accountability, responsibility, collaboration, and respect that reflects PJI s values. The Vice President Finance & Operations joins the Vice President for Programs and Strategy as a significant advisor, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. Primary Responsibilities and Duties Strategic Leadership Develop a proficient and thriving team within operations. Coach, train, and develop staff ensuring accountabilities are being met to expectations.

2 Maintain on-going and fluid communication with the CEO and VP for Programs and Strategy to maximize organizational fluidity, growth, accountability, and financial stability. Strategize, innovate, and create operational and financial protocols and opportunities to further the mission of PJI. Generate powerful ideas and approaches to maximize growth opportunities, internally and externally. Empower leadership team of directors through open communication and information to promote their leadership and ownership of their respective teams. Financial Oversight Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed. Oversee cash, investment, and asset management. Oversee financing strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships. Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activitybased financial analyses to provide insight into the organization s operations and business plans. Planning, Policy, and Investor Relations Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets. Develop financial business plans and forecasts. Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the senior management team. Engage the finance committee of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections. Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc. Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations. Accounting Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function; supervise PJI s finance staff.

3 Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures. Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and PJI s board of directors; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements. Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns. Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions. Operations and infrastructure Oversee the employee benefits administration, ensuring personnel files are accurate, updated, and benefits are in place for each employee. Ensure effective and adequate organizational insurance coverage; general liability, officers and directors, workmen s compensation, unemployment & property to effectively minimalize risk to the organization Create, implement, update and ensure compliance with all organizational administrative and financial policies and procedures. Oversee the administration of all contracts, including grants, consultants, and infrastructure (leasehold, telephone, technology, etc), ensuring compliance and regular review for optimization of services and/or performance. Ensure all legal and/or business licensing regulations are met on a timely basis maintain organizational compliance licensing standards. Assess financial and operational infrastructure/technology supports to streamline efficiencies and make recommendations to the Vice President. Qualifications Education and Experience: Demonstrated proficiencies in accounting, finance, or related field. Experience in a financial-management role, partnering with a leadership team, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies. Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, government and

4 foundation grants, compliance, and reporting. Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software packages. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills. Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills. Desired Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Not-for-profit accounting in accordance with U.S. GAAP. Familiarity of industry, public and partner organization resources. General office software, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps, QuickBooks 2015 Enterprise Edition. Abilities: Support, coach and develop staff, including regular progress reviews and plans for improvement. Foster and cultivate business opportunities and partnerships. Create and assess financial statements and budget documents. Recognize and be responsive to the needs of the organization, including funding organizations, the Board of Directors, and employees. Work well in a team and individually. Detailed oriented. Excellent time management skills. Ability to listen openly and effectively, and to connect with a wide variety of people, personalities, and diverse points of view. Ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease, effectively. Ability to communicate professionally, clearly and concisely both verbal, written and electronically. Integrity, responsibility and confidentiality. Coachability Able to work in a team environment and has the courage to communicate openly and honestly. Eager to learn, and willing to be coached to increase effectiveness, collaboration, and results. Adaptable.

5 Special Working Conditions Telecommuting and working within a virtual environment. Web conferencing. Some travel is required (approximately 25-40%). Flexibility in working hours occasional night and weekend hours may be required. We learn from them and move on. Location: PJI primarily maintains a virtual work environment, with over 20 staff located in Washington, Colorado, Ohio, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland and Virginia. The Operations team is physically located in our Maryland office. During the first year of this job, the VP for F&O would be required to be onsite in Rockville, MD semi-regularly (amount and timing to be discussed) in order to develop relationships and learn the business. Reports To: Cherise Fanno Burdeen, Chief Executive Officer Compensation: Salary range $130,000 - $150,000, compensation commensurate to abilities and experiences.
