General Descriptors Traditionalists Baby Boomers Generation X Millennials Defining idea Duty Individuality Diversity Optimism Success because Leisure is Fought hard and won Reward for hard work Born and should have it Hard work Tenacity The point of life Relief Part of life Education is A dream A birthright A way to get ahead Lifelong Work ethic Dedicated Driven Balanced Determined View of authority Respectful Love/hate Unimpressed Polite Leadership by Hierarchy Consensus Competence Pulling together Jeanne Meister jeanne@futureworkplace.com 2011 FutureWorkplace 2010 Standard Insurance Company 10
The Traditionalists By 2020, Traditionalists are: At least 75 years old or older Working because they have to or want to Have experienced the greatest amount of technological change in home and work Prefer information via print, face to face or phone Are dependable and members of Greatest Generation Used to sacrificing to achieve a goal Jeanne Meister jeanne@futureworkplace.com 2011 FutureWorkplace 2010 Standard Insurance Company 11
Challenges for HR Because of their age, incidents and durations of disabilities and/or illnesses are likely to increase They re more willing to be team players, which puts more emphasis on creating teams for projects or duties They are more likely to use outdated equipment because they don t know about significant updates Less likely to use The Family Medical Leave Act because it started late (1993) for them Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 12
How Workplace Possibilities Helps A Workplace Possibilities on-site consultant can help the HR team identify any potential problems or risks, and help remove barriers to productivity The on-site consultant also can perform ergonomic assessments of a workstation to determine possible modifications or accommodations. For example: o An ergonomically correct chair o An improved computer mouse or keyboard o A treadmill desk o Lifting assistance device o Specialized shoes Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 13
Baby Boomers By 2020, baby boomers are: Between early 50s to early 70s Biggest impacts on this generation were television and personal computers Also called the "growth economy generation Jeanne Meister 2011 FutureWorkplace 2010 Standard Insurance Company 14
Challenges for HR More likely to be hardworking, competitive and enjoy working face to face in team settings Incidents and durations of disabilities and/or illnesses are likely to increase More likely to be using outdated equipment Less likely to use FMLA because they did not grow up with it Michael Klachefsky 15
How Workplace Possibilities Helps A strong disability management program helps demonstrate their employer cares about employee welfare whether the employee is at work or not Similar with traditionalists, ergonomic assistance will be important On-site consultant will help boomers by connecting them to other benefit programs: o Wellness o Disease management o Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 16
Generation X By 2020, Generation X employees are: In their 40s and 50s Seeking self-reliance, independence and balance in their lives Willing to pursue balance almost regardless of impact on finances. Free time is highly valued Less likely to work for just one employer, as they will go to the company that best fits their work/life needs Latchkey kids: think like entrepreneurs, thrive in situations where they can be independent thinkers Expected to become mentors and coaches of the Millennial Generation Jeanne Meister jeanne@futureworkplace.com 2011 FutureWorkplace 2010 Standard Insurance Company 17
Challenges for HR More likely to use FMLA to take unpaid time off benefits are more important than money More likely to jump from company to company, which puts a burden on HR to retain and/or train employees o Exacerbates impending talent shortage Independent thinkers who tend to take on projects alone, which could prove difficult if that employee is absent Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 18
How Workplace Possibilities Helps Show them how to find balance by taking advantage of the multiple layers of strong, integrated disability management: o Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) o Health advocacy o Job accommodations o Wellness programs Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 19
Millennial Generation By 2020, the Millennials are: In their 20s, 30s, and very early 40s Preferring information constantly, ideally delivered through texting or Living on the Web since they ve been able to write their names Used to working remotely Choosing training and development as first-choice benefits other than salary Jeanne Meister 2011 FutureWorkplace 2010 Standard Insurance Company 20
Challenges for HR These are employees who are working more remotely, whether in a coffee shop, at home or on a plane This generation expects to get information quickly, and HR needs to be prepared to deliver it Less likely to request ergonomic help for stay at work as a result of medical conditions Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 21
How Workplace Possibilities Helps Educates them on the value and importance of good ergonomics: o How and where to best use a laptop o How to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome o How to practice good posture at their desks An on-site consultant can help navigate the health care system for faster response times on questions and inquiries Social networking sites will aid on-site consultants in reaching out to absent employees and in making program known to employees at large Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 22
Generation 2020 They will enter the workforce as college graduates by 2020 For many, social networking began before they were even in school with Webkinz and Club Penguin: toys with social networks They will bring a heightened set of requirements and digital expectations with them for their employers Jeanne Meister jeanne@futureworkplace.com 2011 FutureWorkplace 2010 Standard Insurance Company 23
Challenges for HR Heightened social networking will likely cause an increase in presenteeism caused by the stress of multi-tasking Initiatives that retain employees will increase in importance o Constant social networking will make job openings known before they are even posted o Employees who feel their companies actively care about their well being are less likely to change jobs Michael Klachefsky michael.klachefsky@standard.com 24
How Workplace Possibilities Helps On-site consultant will be able to reach out to absent employees through social networking sites They will be able to find and access on-site consultants for assistance through social network sites Word of the abilities of Workplace Possibilities to help will spread through social networking sites Michael Klachefsky 25
