1 Broomfield School Job title Type of post Salary scale Line Manager JOB DESCRIPTION SECOND IN CHARGE OF SCIENCE Science Teacher SECOND IN CHARGE OF SCIENCE Permanent Main Scale/UPS + TLR 2b Head of Science JOB PURPOSE: Work collaboratively with the Head of Science to manage all related planning, organisation and curriculum matters, with specific lead responsibility for aspects of the Science curriculum including schemes of work and assessments. Monitor and evaluate the curriculum and provide specialist subject expertise to assist departmental staff, as appropriate. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT Lead on the design, delivery and monitoring of the curriculum, ensuring that it meets the aims of the school and the needs of all pupils Ensure that innovative and appropriate approaches to learning and ensure that they are made available to pupils with specific learning needs. For example: SEN / EAL / G and T. Ensure that the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum are met Report on progress towards attainment targets as agreed with Head of Science in each year group within each Key Stage Evaluate the design and delivery of the Science curriculum, continuously striving to improve all aspects Monitor and review the teaching of literacy, including aspects of whole school literacy Carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in the schoolteachers Pay and Conditions Document Monitor and evaluate progress towards meeting pupil achievement targets Provide reports to the Head of Science regarding curriculum matters Ensure that there is an effective assessment, recording and reporting system of pupils progress in each year group. 2 PEOPLE MANAGEMENT Assist the Head of Science to ensure that the staff development programme is implemented, monitored and evaluated In conjunction with the Head of Science, ensure that the policies and processes for assessing pupils and for setting, monitoring and evaluating attainment goals for pupils are implemented by all Science staff Create an environment where there is visible acknowledgement that everyone s contribution is valued DEVELOPING & MAINTAINING STRONG COMMUNITY & COMMERCIAL LINKS Contribute to the development of community initiatives Assist the Head of Science to create and implement ways of actively involving parents in the learning process FACILITIES MANAGEMENT INCLUDES Assist the Head of Science to maintain the interior and exterior of the Science accommodation to a high standard that reflects the ethos of the school Manage the security and Health & Safety aspects including legal obligations GENERAL ADMINISTRATION Provide appropriate, accurate and timely management information to enable continuous evaluation of performance Check that information required by various external bodies is produced within the given time scale and is of excellent quality Working Time Full-time teaching position - the status of this post shall require the post holder to be flexible with regard to working time arrangements sufficient to meet the requirements of the post In undertaking this role, the post holder shall ensure that all duties are carried out with due regard to the school s Safeguarding, Health and Safety and other school policies and procedures. 3 Understanding the hazards in the work they undertake Following safety rules and procedures Using work equipment, personal protective equipment, substances, and safety devices correctly Working in accordance with the training provided and only undertaking tasks where appropriate training has been received Employees shall co-operate with the School by allowing it to comply with its duties towards them. This requires employees to: Take part in safety training and risk assessments and suggest ways of reducing risks Take part in emergency evacuation exercises Employees shall report all accidents, near miss incidents and work related ill health conditions to their manager. Employees shall read the School s Health & Safety policy to understand their responsibilities as an employee. Information Security In order to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of School s information, including information provided by pupils, parents, partner organisations and other third parties, where applicable, employees will comply with the School s Information Security Policy. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION: SECOND IN CHARGE OF SCIENCE Qualities and Attributes Essential Desirab le Qualifications Evidenced by A fully qualified teacher with a secondary PGCE Science or equivalent and Qualified Teacher Status Science degree or equivalent Application Appropriate in-service training Experience Relevant experience/proven success in teaching Science at all Key Stages and confidence in developing the curriculum Evidence of excellent classroom practice with a proven ability to teach to a consistently high standard Strong management skills and evidence of motivating pupils and staff A thorough understanding of effective teaching and learning strategies Evidence of raising attainment Knowledge and Skills Knowledge and understanding of current educational developments, particularly in Science at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 An ability to analyse and interpret both internal and external data accurately and to use this to inform future planning and intervention Knowledge of intervention strategies that can be used effectively at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 to address under performance Ability to monitor the quality of teaching and learning across all Key Stages and provide appropriate support as required. Ability to recognise and respond to the needs of children of different attainment levels. Good written and oral communication skills. Ability to work as a member of a team and/or lead a team and to contribute to Page 4 of 5
