The Committee agreed that the mission, beliefs and parameters were still applicable and continued to reflect our association. The Committee also agreed that the objectives were still relevant. The Strategic Planning Committee has developed a strategic plan that will further our mission and includes measurable outcomes. The Committee felt that it was important to set lofty goals and provide a mechanism where those goals can be evaluated. The Committee is confident that with the support and full engagement of the Michigan PTA Board of Directors and Committees, we will accomplish our strategic initiatives. 3 Belief Statements: We believe... Youth members have valuable perspectives on issues and are important ambassadors of the message Quality leadership is vital to the advancement of the association In a culture that empowers parents, families, educators and the community to advocate for all children All children must have access to high quality, free public education That engaging the entire community is essential to the overall well being of children Diversity is counting everyone and inclusion is making everyone count Michigan PTA is the association through which parents, families and students voices are heard and expressed It is essential for Michigan PTA to become truly relevant to today s parents and families Engaging members in the decision making process is essential for the success of the association Parameters: We will respect the unique contributions of every individual We will be accountable to fulfill our commitment to our association We will never revert to the status quo We will obtain the resources needed to accomplish our mission We will ensure the inclusion of a variety of perspectives in our decision making process We will never make a decision, or take a position, contrary to the best interest of all children Objectives: 100% of Michigan schools will have PTA/PTSAs Michigan PTA will provide resources to engage all parents, families and communities. All PTA/PTSA members will receive the training and tools necessary to engage their communities Michigan PTA will work in partnership with a wide array of individuals and organizations to broaden and enhance our ability to serve and advocate for all children and families Strategic Initiatives: 1. We will Build our Capacity a. We will increase our human and financial resources i. Non-Dues Revenue 1. Increase sponsorships by 10% per year. 2. Apply for grants that are related to our projects and strategic initiatives. Research and ii. implement, as appropriate, non-dues revenue programs Training 1. Develop and implement distance learning opportunities for members in 2013, adding additional components in 2014 and Develop and implement advanced training for officers and members by June 2013, adding additional components by June 2014 and iii. Board Development 1. Reevaluate board and committee structures for relevancy and functionally and create an implementation plan by October 1, Secure adequate board members/volunteers and staff to support the strategic plan by June 2014 Approved by the Michigan PTA Board of Directors, August 10, 2013 Michigan PTA 2
4 Strategic Initiatives (continued): b. We will utilize and promote National PTA resources i. As a membership benefit ii. As a resource to educate and empower all parents, families, and communities c. We will retain and grow our membership Develop comprehensive membership plan by September 1, 2013, and revise annually by July 1st, that includes: i. Gather and explore members and non-members feedback ii. Recruit and cultivate a minimum of 10 new units in 2014, and 20 in iii. Expand functionality of membership database iv. Implement new ALL PTA membership structure purchases and donations on website v. Increase individual memberships a minimum 3% in , 5% in and 7% over the previous year vi. Improve the dissemination of information & resources to members vii. Improve support, training and tools for councils viii. Explore alternative unit structures ix. Provide information & resources to non-members in an effort to expand membership d. We will encourage succession planning i. Develop a toolkit to assist units with succession planning and leadership development by December 1, 2013 e. Identify and develop relationships/partnerships with organizations to promote the strategic goals and initiatives of Michigan PTA 2. We will promote Diversity and Inclusion a. We will assist with increasing diversity and inclusivity throughout our communities i. Identify and change the barriers within policies, structure and organizational culture that limit inclusion across all levels of our association by December 1, 2013 ii. Ensure that new policies provide for diversity and inclusion iii. Develop a workshop to address cultural competency, diversity and inclusion by December 1, 2013 b. We will partner with other like minded organizations i. Identify and develop resources and relationships with community organizations that address diversity and inclusion by July 1, ii. Explore options to translate materials into non-english languages. c. We will increase our presence in underserved areas i. Partner with National PTA s initiative in underserved areas, as available ii. Identify and develop relationships with government and community organizations that address underserved populations by July 1, iii. Develop resource specific to various underserved populations such as inner city, rural or homeless communities and alternative family structures. 3. We will increase our Advocacy efforts i. Finalize and distribute Where We Stand by January 1, 2014 ii. Increase members participation in National PTA s Take Action Network and Michigan PTA CapWiz iii. Increase members engagement in advocacy issues iv. Develop relevant advocacy resources v. 5 Strategic Initiatives (continued): 4. We will improve our Communications a. We will enhance our Public Awareness i. Build public perception of Michigan PTA as a leader in advocacy for children, parents & families ii. Develop and implement a marketing campaign, inclusive of a funding plan, by January 1, 2014 iii. Increase Michigan PTA s response to issues that affect children, parents & families iv. Develop and implement a system to track Michigan PTA s response to issues that affect children, parents by September 1st. b. We will strengthen our overall Communications i. Develop and implement communications plan by January 1, 2014 c. We will utilize new and advanced Technology i. Evaluate, develop and implement technology tools ii. Develop and implement social media training for local units by December 1, We will support the National Standards i. Develop a family/community engagement plan, inclusive of a funding plan, by July 1, 2014 ii. Develop a plan to advocate for the inclusion of the National Standards in Michigan Department of Education policies, by September 1, 2014 iii. Promote the implementation of the National Standards in every community Strategic Planning Committee: Teresa Marhofer, Chair and President Ruthann Jaquette, President-Elect Tonya Whitehead, Secretary Lisa St. Aubin, Member Sandra York, Executive Director Committee Notes: The Committee is aware that it is up to the Michigan PTA Board of Directors and Committees to develop the action steps to achieve the strategic plan. However, the Committee wanted to share some of the actions that were discussed during the Committee meetings. Michigan PTA Membership Committee and Field Service Team will provide programs, resources and support to local units to sustain and increase membership Michigan PTA will also commit to developing new Board of Directors and Committee members from our local units and councils. Develop and implement a cold call plan to reactivate and activate new units. Michigan PTA will outreach to other education groups in Michigan to develop contacts within school districts The Committee on Children s Advocacy will be actively involved in bringing issues forward and providing background on the topics Michigan PTA will utilize e-blasts, e-bulletins, Facebook, meeting modules, press releases and other communication tools to keep our members and others informed of the work of the Michigan PTA, relevant issues and leadership topics.
