1 JOB DESCRIPTION IDENTIFICATION OF JOB JOB TITLE - Community Engagement Officer TEAM - People and Wildlife Team WORKING BASE - Bickley Hall Farm, Malpas, Cheshire RESPONSIBLE TO - People and Wildlife Team Leader RESPONSIBLE FOR - Volunteers, work placements, contractors OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB The Officer will be responsible for working within the People and Wildlife Team to coordinate Wildlife Watch and deliver education work relating to CWTs Conservation Strategy objectives to inspire people about the natural world and aim to encourage individual action for wildlife and the environment. They will be required to lead on our community engagement work with school children and local residents along the River Dee in Cheshire working to increase the awareness, understanding and support for our landscape-scale conservation programme along the River. With the support of other members of staff at CWT, the post holder will design and deliver a programme of education day for KS1 & 2, events, volunteer, workshops and talks for local residents along the River Dee in Cheshire. The aim of which is to increase local people s enjoyment, understanding and active participation in their local landscape and increase the profile of the River and CWT. The Officer will be responsible for working with the People and Wildlife Team to deliver other education work to inspire people about the natural world. They will help to develop and deliver Key Stage 1 and 2 educational programmes in schools and at Bickley Hall Farm and other countryside sites. The Officer will also be coordinating our Wildlife Watch (the junior branch of the Wildlife Trust) volunteers in Cheshire supporting them in the delivery of safe environmental activities for children. The post holder will be an ambassador for Cheshire Wildlife Trust whilst delivering activities and events and be responsible for upholding the Trust s reputation, image and level of service.

2 About the Go With the Flow Project Project description The main aim of the Go With the Flow Project is to enable communities from deprived urban areas in Chester and surrounding towns to explore, understand and value the wildlife and landscape found along the River Dee. Project activity will include: Working with at least ten schools to develop and deliver inspiring education experiences Guided walks and talks open to all Working with local communities to develop and deliver a programme of activities and events including at least 8 practical conservation projects The staging of a big celebratory event at the Grosvenor Park, Chester in each year of the project Setting up and running a local Wildlife Watch Group (the junior arm of the Wildlife Trusts) Training and support for volunteers to continue many of the activities once the project is completed. A part-time Community Engagement Officer, reporting to our People & Wildlife Team Leader, who will engage with the local communities by working with organisations such as housing associations, residents associations, allotment holders, local schools, care homes, youth groups and play groups to encourage their contribution to the outcomes of the project.

3 MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Community Engagement Officers duties Education/community engagement work Develop and lead the delivery of environmental education activities linked to Cheshire Wildlife Trust s Conservation Strategy and the National Curriculum at Early Years, KS1 and 2. Work with staff across the trust to deliver the Go with the Flow Project. See brief project description. Work with the Events Assistant to plan and take a lead in running activities associated with this project. Carry out or facilitate the recruitment, supervision, motivation and training of volunteers to assist with the delivery of agreed education programmes and practical tasks with in the Go with the Flow Project. Expand the school work to engage the wider community enabling a wide spectrum of local people to take part in wildlife events and conservation activity days. Advise on and deliver physical improvements to school grounds and community spaces to benefit wildlife. Deliver CWT s other education work upon request. Develop contacts with education authorities, schools and colleges in the Trust area. Actively promote CWTs education programme to schools and Schools Watch across the Cheshire region. Wildlife Watch Promote Wildlife Watch in the Cheshire Region Recruit Watch Leaders and support the creation of new Watch Groups. Provide Watch Leader training opportunities and monitor First Aid training needs. Liaise with Events Assistant and Watch Leaders to include local Watch events in CWT s events programme. Support Watch groups in funding applications. Lead on the delivery of Family Watch Events. Lead on the development and delivery of a Summer Holiday Watch programme around the Cheshire Region. Other duties Support and develop funding bid applications and the development of new projects to diversify and extend our portfolio of work. Assist with the promotion of CWT s People and Wildlife work through the media and interpretation materials. Keep up to date with the National Curriculum and current trends in environmental and sustainable education. Promote membership of Cheshire Wildlife Trust. Maintain an efficient booking, evaluation and activity recording system to ensure that CWT delivers a continually improving and quality service. To act as an ambassador for CWT at all times and provide high standards of customer care.

4 Undertake other related work commensurate to this position from time to time as directed. Other relevant factors of the job We expect you to carry out your job responsibilities in an environmentally aware manner, ensuring as little damage to the environment as possible. Our aim is to ensure all resources are utilised effectively and efficiently. You will be expected to apply sound value for money principles in undertaking purchasing or supply of goods and services. The job will require some travel throughout the region and country to attend events, visit reserves and attend meetings. Many activities are held on evenings or weekends and so the post may frequently involve working unsociable hours with time off in lieu. At CWT volunteers are a major resource and make a vital contribution to our aim to encourage individual action for wildlife and the environment. You will be expected to encourage, develop and support volunteer involvement in our work. JOB SPECIFICATION 1. Management and Supervision Working with other team members Responsible for providing regular guidance/ management for volunteers. Responsible for overseeing the work of freelance educators. 2. Accountability and Resources Responsible for delivering targets (e.g. quality, numbers) for education visits and events. Accountable for the delivery of education programmes within the agreed budget and curriculum parameters. 3. Job Impact Key member of the People and Wildlife Team Ambassador for Cheshire Wildlife Trust whilst delivering activities and events responsible for upholding the Trust s reputation, image and level of service. In order for the organisation to work effectively, you may be required to assist other areas of work and therefore you should be prepared to undertake other duties appropriate to the post as delegated by your line manager. 4. Independence and Judgement Overall supervision is provided but you will often be working alone and sometimes in collaboration with others. Responsible for managing your own time and work load on a day-day basis. Responsible for ensuring that health and safety procedures relating to children on school visits and events are fully observed.

5 5. People and Contacts Day to day contact with teachers and volunteers. Day to day contact with member of local communities at all levels and of all ages. Will work with staff at all levels within CWT including the Chief Executive and members of the board of Trustees. Regular contact with school children and, as such, a Criminal Records Bureau check will be carried out before commencement in post. 6. Creativity and Innovation Development of creative, engaging and innovative education programmes. A need to be versatile and flexible, able to adapt to a variety of daily challenges and sometimes last minutes changes to planned work. Required to work with a wide range of audiences, ages and levels of ability in both formal and informal situations. 7. Working Conditions This is a temporary contract. All new employees to the Trust undertake a probationary period, in which time they are expected to establish their suitability for the post. The post-holder will be subject to a full CRB check. This post will be based at Bickley Hall Farm, however you will be required to travel throughout Cheshire to deliver education activities within schools, on CWT reserves and on land owned by third parties. Frequent weekend working is required to facilitate family events for which time off in lieu will be available. Limited evening working is expected and the normal working day for CWT is 9am to 5pm. CWT operates an employee pension scheme. The post-holder will need to be able to drive and have access to their own transport, for which a mileage allowance will be paid. The post-holder will need to have a reasonable level of fitness and mobility and be able to spend a significant amount of time outside, sometimes on difficult terrain.

6 PERSON SPECIFICATION JOB TITLE - Community Engagement Officer TEAM - People and Wildlife Team Knowledge A degree in a relevant or related subject (eg environmental science, countryside management, education) A PGCE or other teaching qualification A good general knowledge of wildlife and conservation issues An understanding of the Health & Safety requirements and welfare issues of working with children and young people An understanding of the National Curriculum Experience Project management experience Experience of training, motivating and coordinating volunteers Experience in using IT packages such as Word, Excel and Outlook Experience in writing successful funding applications Experience of community engagement work. Representing an environmental or wildlife organisation at events and in the community. Experience of public speaking Experience of producing interpretive displays and materials Skills Good organisational skills Time management skills and an ability to prioritise and work under pressure and to deadlines Ability to enthuse people about Cheshire s wildlife & CWT Creative and innovative approach to environmental education activities Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, with children, teachers and members of the public. Personal Ability to work as part of a small team A flexible approach to managing a changing workload with a willingness to increase the number of hours worked in the future Outgoing and enthusiastic A willingness to undertake regular travel A willingness to work weekends Essential Desirable

7 High level of self motivation and enthusiasm A clean driving licence and own vehicle available for business use. GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS Salary: Pension: Hours of Work: Duration of post: Holidays: Place of work:. 18,000 pa pro rata. The Trust has a Group Personal Pension Scheme, which is available to the post holder. The post holder will also be eligible for employer s contributions of 10% on completion of the probationary period. Initially part-time hours 0.8 FTE with the potential of becoming fulltime as the post if funding allows, (based on 35 hours FTE). Overtime is not paid but time off in lieu may be taken, where appropriate, as the post may involve some evening or weekend working. This post is temporary for 2 years. All new employees undertake a probationary period of 6 months, in which time they are expected to demonstrate their suitability for the post.
