Introduce Michelle Monti has left Brown, Amanda Figgins has agreed to be her replacement. Kelsea Parker has agreed to take minutes for SAC.
2 2. Thanked Jessica for making the nametags, she was not here but still wanted to thank her. 3. Steven and Joie met with Angel about staff development day. They will come around to each committee and talk to each committee about their meeting. 12:08pm - Committee Meetings; (Expectations, goals, mini presentations) Committee Meetings: 1. Broke out into meetings 2. Came back to present to the group 3. Had to interrupt committees presenting because Rick came to talk to the group. 4. Came back to finish up with each committee presenting Events & Participation: 1. March 18 th Bingo 2. NCAA college madness same day as Bingo. They need to find a TV to use. (Live streaming, projector or large screen) 3. Outdoor meet and mingle kickball tentatively scheduled for June. a. Summer version of our holiday party b. Get Ben s band again. c. Need to talk about budget though but everyone thinks it s a great idea. Outreach and Communications: 1. Staff recognition program. Anyone can nominate their work and efforts. a. Find a way to stop light collect answers 2 times a year b. Bring more attraction to the website and Facebook Diversity and Inclusion: 1. Brown bag lunch will be held; a. March 24 th People of Color (POC) b. April 9 th LGBTQ c. May 9 th Women 2. How SAC can include staff more Volunteer Committee: 1. Clean up day at Roger Williams National Memorial park (here in providence) a. April 15 th proposed date 9am- 12pm b. Arrange transportation (could use our RIPA passes) c. T-shirts? Need to check budget. d. Karen will send department s letter/ s if members need them to get that time off of work. 2. Prov Fest a. June 2 nd - 5 th Thursday Sunday b. Can do this as a group
3 3. Develop survey a. Want to bring in other committees like Outreach and communications to add to the survey that will be sent out to the staff b. Want to send out one big survey through and want to send it out soon. c. Every committee should bring in a few questions that they think will be good to add to the survey for the next meeting. d. Would like for everyone to have access to the old survey answers. 4. Spotlight on volunteering a. For staff members. Potentially work with O&C to develop the program. 12:44pm - Speaker Richard Locke Provost - Diversity and Inclusion Plan: SAC member s introductions to Rick Locke Rick Locke: 1. How dedicated the staff is here and he is very thankful for that. 2. How to get SAC/Staff more involved with the plan. 3. Make sure everyone feels supported while they are here at Brown. 4. Recruit, mentor, make sure we are truly are what we say we are as an institution 5. Needs the entire committee to really make this work. 6. Working document really wants feedback so it is able to be an effective plan and works well for everyone. 7. Questions from the SAC members: 8. How staff hiring managers can really help to include the diversity inclusion plan when they are in the processes of hiring? a. Rick- does not have all the answers b. Its what that department needs c. A document is in process of being written to help with this d. More reach out within the department, more people need to get engaged in this process 9. More talks will help people to understand better and feel better 10. Better job recruiting (graduate students) need to go where they are 11. Job fair is a great idea 12. Rick- IMSD-learned a lot about recruiting, getting out off of the standards it is possible 13. Need to continue the conversation a. More opportunities to get together on this topic 14. Rick- felt very positive energy at the Diversity Day 15. Liza - they are working on what is next a. Blending/learning together b. Bringing people together
4 c. Panels is an idea 16. SAC wants to be more involved 17. Some mangers won t let staff go to events. This is an ongoing problem. a. Rick- this is unacceptable and needs to be addressed because it is essential for staff to be able to go to these events b. Rick- it is against policy for staff to use vacation or sick time for professional development days 18. Stronger messaging ( s) we would like to see more of from Rick 19. Make it easier for staff to be able to be apart of events with out having to leave their desks if they truly cannot. a. Record events b. Live stream events c. Put use things that happened at the events on the website for staff to be able to go back and look at d. Rick- says this is all in the works for coming 20. Staff work like to see a better way to sign up for events a. Rick- they hope to do better and this is in the works, will take about a year for this to happen. 21. Rick- Needs to figure out what he needs to make available or what should be offered. a. A list of books that can help people understand this plan a little better 22. How are decisions made to make a committee? (Not a lot of staff members are on committees) a. Rick- This is not as well thought out as it could be, he is aware of this issue, they are caught up in the old routine, they want to correct this issue 23. How to hold managers accountable? a. Rick- wants to welcome any suggestions on how to hold this conversation 1:40pm - Wrap Up Discussion: Joie/Steve 1. Staff Development day a. SAC will play a big roll this year i. SAC is organizing the Farmers market. Need to set up vendors ii. Volunteer will be working on Community Services projects. iii. O&C is working on a raffle iv. Ben Garvin is the MC of the lip sync battle 2. Anthony Mam was appointed to the Diversity and Inclusion Oversight Board. 3. Speaker (Rick Locke): a. 3 points to put on the website
5 i. New staff hire. ii. Ongoing work for this plan iii. Got any ideas? (Rick is welcoming anything that staff members have to stay). iv. Did admit that there is an oversight to staff not being on certain committees. v. Wants staff to have an active role in this Diversity Inclusion plan. vi. Would like for more events like the Diversity day to be able to be live streamed. 4. Brown bag lunch a. We need to be prepared for what angry people are going to say. b. Wendy will be at all of the Brown bag lunches and Anthony will be at all but the Women s one. c. Plan meeting before the lunches with committee and Wendy. 2:03pm - Adjourn
