2 Industry 4.0: What does the industry think? Industrial revolutions do t come about all at once. They occur step-by-step in increasingly shorter intervals. The first step was enabled by machines in the 18th century. Electricity was the signal for mass production around 100 years ago. Electronics gave momentum to automation in the 1970s and w we are standing at the cusp of Industry 4.0. Experts agree that the fourth industrial revolution has begun. Driven by advances in IT, factories and energy systems are being networked. The Internet, mobile devices and cloud computing are fundamentally changing manufacturing. Thanks to embedded systems, products and machines can exchange information automously and the process is monitored and controlled online. But how far along the path to Industry 4.0 are we? And what do the parties involved think about it? A survey of employees at industrial enterprises who attended HANNOVER MESSE in 2014 sheds light on these questions. On behalf of Deutsche Messe AG, professional users and manufacturers were interviewed on the present and the future. These respondents kw what they are talking about: Half of all participants are in management positions; one third work for companies with more than 1,000 employees, two-thirds are employed by SMEs. We d like to begin with one important finding from the study: Several industrial sectors have accepted the challenge completely, others less so. 3 Where Industry 4.0 is an issue and where it isn t. 84 percent of German manufacturers and users believe that Industry 4.0 will provide a new frame work to human labor in production. However, what this will look like is difficult for many to envision. Only four out of ten respondents have a clear idea of the changes that the transformation to Industry 4.0 will bring to their working environment in the future. However, standards and application concepts need to be developed today. For this reason, the majority of participants in the study say that Industry 4.0 is already an issue at their companies. 4 The power industry has a sense of where this is heading. Industry 4.0 is certainly t gaining a foothold in all sectors simultaneously. Ideas differ greatly on how it could change working environments: Among telecommunication employees, 54 percent have already formed a clear image of their future. In research that figure is 51%, in both commerce and the environmental industry it is 46 percent. Only four out of ten respondents had an idea. The power industry has a clear vision of the future manufacturing industries are still thinking about it. 4

5 Automation techlogy spearheads the revolution. BITKOM estimates the additional potential for added value through Industry 4.0 techlogies in Germany to be 78 billion Euros and that alone in six sectors: mechanical and plant engineering, electrical engineering, automotive engineering, the chemical industry, agriculture and ITC. This would correspond to an annual growth rate of 1.7 percent. A gigantic pie and the telecoms industry hopes to get a big piece of it. They also ascribe the leadership role in the course of Industry 4.0 to themselves. In contrast, most other industries see automation techlogy as spearheading the movement. Two out of three respondents agreed with this statement, both in Germany and the rest of the world. Automation is seen as the driving force behind transforming the value chain. 5

6 A topic for the big boys. For what type of company is Industry 4.0 relevant? 59 percent of German and 48 percent of foreign respondents answered For corporations. 41 percent of German and 30 percent of foreign participants responded with For SMEs. On the contrary, 44 percent of those surveyed from smaller operations already have a clear vision of the future in large companies the figure is 39 percent. 7 Humans will be given a new role. It goes without saying that Industry 4.0 will change the way humans work: Over 80 percent of all participants in the HANNOVER MESSE survey are convinced of this. Researchers believe that a blurring of work boundaries and the exclusion of less qualified laborers are possible. On the other hand, the remaining assignments will be more challenging and there will be a greater demand for interdisciplinary skills. Industry 4.0 will create lasting changes in the way humans work. 8 Industry 4.0 especially affects everyone else. The phemen itself, the fusion of manufacturing and IT, is beyond dispute. Industry 4.0 is already the subject of discussion in the majority of companies. Our working environment will change. And yet, nearly half of those surveyed believe that the subject will t affect them personally. Only 50 percent of German and 43 percent of foreign interviewees answered with a clear affirmative. 9 Well informed? Only one third think they are. Those like acatech President Prof. Henning Kagermann who speak of the fourth industrial revolution usually call for increasing the exchange of kwledge between science and industry. According to experts, digital transformation can only be shaped through cooperation between various industries and disciplines. Small, medium-sized and large companies also need to work more closely together. How well are industrial manufacturers and operators prepared for such intercommunication? At any rate, only one third of those surveyed currently believe themselves to be sufficiently informed regarding Industry 4.0. In particular, manufacturing industries are still unsure at 27 percent it has the lowest information rate of all sectors. 10 Trade fairs and professional journals: the top sources of kwledge. The survey shows that a great thirst for technical kwledge regarding the latest developments exists. Providers of corresponding solutions therefore ask themselves how do the actual users learn about Industry 4.0? The results of the survey make it clear that 54 percent of German and 42 percent of foreign respondents get their information from trade fairs. 46 and 37 percent respectively regularly read relevant professional journals. 41 and 37 percent respectively make use of web portals. Colleagues and business partners are seen as sources of kwledge by 37 percent of German and 39 percent of foreign participants. Currently, information is gathered at trade shows, from professional journals, online and in discussions with business partners. 10

11 German specialists promise an edge % 7 % Germany wants to become the world s leading provider of the most up-to-date manufacturing techlogy. 22 % 69 % 33 % 59 % This is t just the goal of the German Federal Government s High-tech Strategy ; the associations, BIT- KOM, VDMA and ZVEI are also working towards becoming the leading market with their Industry 4.0 Platform. The German National Academy of Science and Engineering, acatech, and leading research institutions are also lending momentum to the process. Germany Rest of the world It is therefore wonder that awareness of Industry 4.0 is especially prounced in Germany: 49 percent of German trade visitors were very aware of the subject at HANNO- VER MESSE 2014; awareness among visitors from abroad, on the other hand, was at only 35 percent. Is a competitive edge possible? Ather question also demonstrates how the discussion in Germany forms awareness. To the tantalizing question Will industrial companies be able to gain competitive advantage from Industry 4.0? 69 percent of German respondents answered. The answer was unmistakably less at 59 percent from those outside Germany German professionals have obviously recognized the potential of Industry
