This module is updated annually to reflect new legal and regulatory issues as well as current themes in banking (primarily in developed economies but also touching on developing economies). You may be seeking employment in the banking industry and/or in a role requiring frequent contact with banks and this course provides preparation for a broad understanding of the challenges of potential employers either in banking or as users of banks. You will also learn how governments and banks have common and diverging interests that affect all economic participants. The module aims to develop your understanding of the key principles underlying strategic and management challenges facing banks today and in the future. You should be able to understand why banks may be similar or behave quite differently depending on their home (headquarters) or host (operating) country, how banks choose businesses to operate in, and why they change them. You will also learn about some of the cultural conflicts inherent in strategy, management and risk taking by banks. On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: - Evaluate key bank strategy and management challenges - Explain how business environments influence bank strategies and management - Discuss critically how basic financial theory on businesses is distorting in banks by governments and regulation - Discuss critically cultural and financial conflicts inherent in the strategies and managing of banks Skills: - Determine various stakeholder influences on bank strategic and management decisions - Evaluate the strategies and management of a range of banks operating in different environments - Gain a perspective on strategy and management for meetings with prospective employers Values and attitudes: - Perceive the cultural environments in which banks operate -Perceive cultural conflicts inherent in the risk taking and operations of banks HOW WILL I LEARN?

3 A variety of learning and teaching methods will be used in this course. Lectures are used to introduce context, concepts and techniques illustrated with practical and current examples. You will also have the opportunity to participate in class discussions and work through examples and exercises with the support of the lecturer. It is strongly recommended that you attend ALL lectures. Key learning and teaching resources will be put on the module website on Moodle. In the independent study time you are encouraged to read widely and in depth around particular topics in preparation for lectures and tutorials. You may also spend time working through sample exercises and questions. In addition you will be preparing and undertaking your coursework assignments and preparing for your final examination. Assessments This module is assessed by Coursework and Examination. Coursework will be in the form of a substantial test, held in approximately week 8. The test will be 90 minutes in duration and will comprise a mixture of multiple choice answer style and short essay questions, designed to test your recollection, application and interpretation of the material covered so far.
