3 6 Apprenticeship myths blown away Introduction Apprenticeships are growing in popularity among both employers and young people, with a 24% increase in vacancies posted online in the first academic quarter of 2013/14*. There has also been a leap of 43%* in online applications over the same period, giving rise to demand for employers to create more vacancies. But with the increase in demand for Apprenticeships comes an increase in questions from young people and their families: What is an Apprenticeship? How much will I earn on an Apprenticeship? Who are Apprenticeships for? What do apprentices do? What does an Apprenticeship mean for my career? Is an Apprenticeship right for me? This book is designed to give you all the answers you need, exploding the most commonly held myths around Apprenticeships and giving you the knowledge you need to make an informed decision about your future. * Source: National Apprenticeship Service,

5 What does an apprentice do? The truth Apprentices are employed to fill a skills gap within a business, and the Apprenticeships they complete offer a structured programme that gives them the skills they need to do a job well. As part of practical training in work, and structured training in a college or other training provider, apprentices work alongside trained professionals in their workplace to learn from them. The types of tasks undertaken are varied and valuable, and may include: Electrician: planning, installing and repairing electrical fixtures, testing circuits and assembling electrical systems. Graphic designer: working with computers to create effective designs, managing your work schedule and liaising with clients Health practitioner: helping people with particular needs, either in care, the community or their own homes, or supporting doctors and patients in hospital wards Whatever sector you choose, the work will be challenging and rewarding, and you will finish your Apprenticeship with the skills and experience you need to progress in the industry. 4

6 Apprenticeships work: The practical hands-on nature of Apprenticeships ensures apprentices gain the skills, knowledge and experience they need to progress in their chosen career. 8 Aren t Apprenticeships just for trades? Choose from hundreds of Apprenticeships Some of the most exciting and forward-thinking companies in the world have Apprenticeship programmes, equipping apprentices with the skills they need across hundreds of sectors. Research suggests it can be easier to get a foot on the career ladder with large organisations as an apprentice than as a graduate four years later so they can be a great route into your chosen company. Apprenticeships are available in: Business: law, business administration, accountancy, customer service, retail, management, tourism, hospitality and human resources Creative industries: including digital media, web development, marketing and graphic design Trades: carpentry, plumbing, catering, automotive mechanics, hairdressing, catering, engineering and construction Manufacturing: food and drink, quality improvement, process manufacturing and sustainable resource management Land-based: agriculture, horticulture, animal care, veterinary nursing, equine and floristry Public sector: health, education, policing, dental nursing, public services and childcare 7

9 Apprenticeships are available in everything from accountancy to manufacturing and healthcare: Apprenticeships have been developed by a wide range of industries. Current employers include BMW, Sainsburys, British Gas, and Orange as well as small local companies. There are more than 80 different types of Apprenticeship to choose from in Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly. - National Apprenticeship Service,

11 Where does an apprentice work? The truth Often, an apprentice will spend four days a week in the workplace, and one day a week in college or with another training provider*. During their Apprenticeship, an apprentice will gain a range of qualifications and certificates, including: An NVQ: this will be linked to the industry they work in Key skills: these general business skills, such as communication, teamwork and numeracy, will be incorporated into the training On the job assessment: apprentices are also assessed in the workplace to make sure they are gaining the skills and knowledge they need to progress within their career Some of this will be completed in college or with a training provider, some in the apprentice s own time, and some will be assessed in the workplace. * This can vary depending on your Apprenticeship but you need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week. 10

13 The wages are really low. Myth

14 Apprentices don t earn much, do they? The truth The minimum starting wage for an apprentice is 2.68 per hour*. However, as skills develop employers tend to increase wages in fact, recent research found that apprentices earn an average of 170 net pay per week*. A graduate starting university in 2012 could expect to accumulate a debt of over 60,000 during their studies. Compare that with an apprentice, who is essentially paid to progress their way through Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, and Level 5 of the NVQ. People with an Advanced Level Apprenticeship earn on average over 100,000 more over the course of their career than those without, so it s a good choice for career success. 15 Apprenticeships equal to degrees: A new report from the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) has concluded that Apprenticeships must be seen on an equal footing with university degrees. 44% of graduates will be unemployed after six months compared to only 4.5% with a Level 4 vocational qualification. - Centre for Economics & Business Research,

17 What are the job prospects for apprentices? The truth An Apprenticeship opens doors to more training opportunities, a better career and a more secure future. One of the most attractive aspects of employing an apprentice for an employer, is the professional experience they bring. The hands-on experience they have gained puts apprentices at a real advantage over graduates. Qualified apprentices offer many benefits that employers value: Professional experience: They have worked within the industry, making relevant contacts and building their network Practical knowledge: An Apprenticeship means practical hands-on training, giving them the skills to add value from the start Technical qualifications: Many Apprenticeships include specialist technical certificates specific to their industry, giving them the qualifications as well as the experience to do a good job 16

20 Do employers want to employ apprentices? The truth Apprenticeship starts have almost doubled in two years*, and many view them as the secret ingredient to sustainable business growth. The benefits of employing apprentices for employers are significant, and include: Reducing training & recruitment costs Increasing productivity and motivation within the workforce Developing a skilled workforce Improving customer service results Providing a return on investment The majority of businesses can even access a grant of up to 1,500 to help employ an apprentice.
