1 Cultural Intelligence Take full advantage of the cultural diversity in global teams
2 The Model of Freedom is a culture model that serves international companies to take full advantage of the cultural diversity in their global teams Cultural Intelligence helps to understand peoples` behavior and better manage expectations The Model of Freedom is a culture model, which enables us to draw profiles of organizational and national cultures. These profiles visualize why people act, perceive and interpret as they do. By comparing different profiles we learn about similarities and differences in preferred management, leadership and working styles. Thus, the model leverages cultural advantages, analyzing past experiences, clarifying the present and predicting future behaviors of global team members and business leaders. The cultural profiling model is rooted in real world experiences of professionals working in international companies and organizations. It has developed into a solid tool, tested with more than managers over a period of ten years. Besides its value for vocational and organizational cultures, the Model of Freedom enables us to categorize the preferred management styles in 52 countries. duties in a community), the individual attitude towards authorities and the attitude towards systems. We note this as a rating in each orientation. Connecting these rating results in a diagram represents a specific culture The Model of Freedom categorizes characteristic individual and/or group behavior. We are able to classify the four cultural orientations Action, Process, Task and Role by measuring the main Cultural Components as the Individuality (the right to be different), the role behavior (obligations and 2
3 The Four Cultural Orientations. Features and Perceptions of the Reality Action Orientation Just do it. Get started. I don`t care how you do it. Keep it simple. Be decisive. Be a winner. Be positive. Get people to buy in. Make things visible Process Orientation Always be well prepared. Have intelligent arguments on hand. Hierarchy is important and should be respected. Decisions may take time. Life is a complex process. Task Orientation People work together because they have a common task. Be direct and content driven. You are personally accountable. People need to feel involved. Role Orientation Everybody has a role and obligation. A task is accomplished through team efforts. We share responsibility. Communication is mostly vertical. We focus on relations. Only Leaders who know themselves are able to engage people towards the mission Peter Drucker 3
4 Business Case: A German and Russian company set up a joint venture entity in the Moscow region. With the Model of Freedom we measure the different company cultures of the German and Russian entities by subgroups or functional groups. The rating results of the Cultural components shows a TASK-Orientation of the German Management team and a PROCESS- Orientation of the Russian Management members. The Model of Freedom enables us to understand the different behaviors and expectations in the integration process. In the following comparison of attributes some potential threats in leadership and communication style are listed German Team (red) goal oriented and fast decisions Motivation through target/ goal setting Everybody is personally responsible and accountable Direct and be critical when needed Behaviors & Attributes Russian Team (blue) Relationship management and focus on stabilitiy and protection Motivation by intellectual process, not only by target Time in planning process is well spent. Decisions take time Team responsibility and team rewarding formal communication base on hierachy The Russian / German joint venture is facing potential threats if both teams do not recognize each others deep beliefs and consequently not corresponding to the behavioral patterns and expectations of the different cultures. It will lead to conclusions in both teams, that one party is incompetent, not taking the subjects serious and professional and the others is way to serious and working inefficient. For the Russian team the German management style has a negative approach to proposals or target settings and is far too direct and critical not respecting hierarchy and authorities. The German team does not understand the Russian relationship management. With the reliance on hierarchical structures the decision making process is irritating and unnecessary long. To learn from each other and reconcile the strengths of each culture is the mission of Culture Intelligence. 4
