3 Workshop Objective Workshop Objective HR is a key element of the business excellence process within the Tata group and HR systems, processes and capability contribute significantly towards the key outcomes of the organisations. Over the past few years, group companies and the TBEM assessment teams have provided feedback on the need to include more senior HR professionals as part of the assessment process. Apart from the assessment process, these assessors can also provide a significant impetus to the business excellence initiatives at their respective organisations. The main objectives of this programme were to: Build HR capability to improve organization performance Create a pool for experienced assessors for TBEM assessments Create a pool of experienced team members for executing HR deep dives Understand the leadership view on HR s role in business excellence and organization performance Deep dive into key HR functional areas and understand the linkages with the overall TBEM assessment process 3

4 About the Program Group Human Resources (Group HR) in partnership with Tata Business Excellence Group (TBExG, earlier known as TQMS) organised the second edition of the HR Senior Business Leaders Programme (HR- SBLP) from 18th to 21st January in Mumbai. The first edition of this programme was organised in April senior HR leaders from various group companies participated in this four day programme. This programme was aimed at CHROs and senior HR managers, such as direct reports and HR process owners having around years of professional work experience. Dr NS Rajan, Member - Group Executive Council and Group Chief Human Resources Officer, Tata Sons, set expectations for the programme and S Padmanabhan, Executive Chairman, Tata Quality Management Services, explained the importance of HR in TBEM assessments. About the Program Other senior leaders at the programme included Suresh Dutt Tripathi, Vice President (HRM), Tata Steel; Dr. PV Ramanna Murthy, Chief Human Resources Officer, Taj Group; Emmanuel David, Director, TMTC; Chetan Tolia, Chief Human Resources Officer, Tata Power; Aadesh Goyal, Chief Human Resources Officer, Tata Communications and Dr. Arup Basu, President-New Businesses and Innovation, Tata Chemicals. 4

5 Program Details Program Details At the start of the programme, Dr NS Rajan, Member - Group Executive Council and Group Chief Human Resources Officer, Tata Sons, set expectations for the programme and explained the dual objectives of providing Business Excellence assessment exposure as well as strengthening the HR domain aspects, which are critical during the assessment process. S Padmanabhan, Executive Chairman, Tata Quality Management Services, explained the importance of HR in TBEM assessments. He highlighted that the functional HR elements have always been a challenge for the assessors and applicant companies. These challenges were discussed in greater detail. The HR domain expertise was addressed during the programme by senior HR Leaders within the group. Post introduction of the participants, faculty and course was over, the focus shifted to the Tata Business Excellence Model (TBEM). Points covered were introduction to the assessment stages, the key business factors, the TBEM Blue Book and understanding the criteria. The session included a film on business excellence. Participants were also taken through process of reading the application, identifying Key Business Factors (KBFs) and assessment concepts of Approach, Deployment, Learning and Integration (ADLI). The day ended with concepts on scoring, preparing ADLI, comment writing along with a film on LeTCI concept (Levels, Trends, Comparison & Integration). 5

6 Program Details On the second day, Dr.Murthy focused He focused on the importance of strategic planning process and HR s role in contributing to value creation for the organization. He also shed light on the various tools organisations use to deploy the organization wide strategy and its implications. His session also focused on importance of organization culture in overall strategy deployment within an organization. Day three started with S Padmanabhan taking a session based on three case studies on companies from different sectors; this session focused on appreciating the context of the applicant company from an assessment perspective. The highlight of the session was that assessors need to identify the key drivers for an organization and also need to meet the right people who will be able to give in-depth insights into the company. The discussion ended with a session on understanding results and group presentation on case. Program Details Emmanuel David, Chetan Tolia, MK Nagabhushan participated in an open discussion on experiences and expectations from a TBEM assessment process. Deepak Deshpande from TBExG moderated this session. All of them shared their expectations from the assessment process and the overall experience they have had till date. Day four started with, Suresh Dutt Tripathi covered the key elements of employee engagement, linkage of employee engagement to the different categories of the TBEM framework and the methods of assessing and improving employee engagement in an organisation. This was followed by analysing responses and group presentations on case. 6

7 Program Details Program Details Aadesh Goyal s session on leadership development and succession planning dived deep into the assessor s perspective of leadership and succession management. He focused on sharing the experiential learning and some of the key initiatives launched at Tata Communications. The concluding session covered a team leader s perspective of a TBEM assessment. Dr. Arup Basu took this session and shared his experiences and learning as a team leader. He also focused on key questions that needs to be answered by an assesse company during the assessment process. Group HR also shared the analysis of the workforce category results of last 3 years and a list of standardised metrics for the organisations to report in their future applications. 7

8 Key Takeaways The programme met with a lot of appreciation from the attendees with many of them finding it great to be a part of this batch. Many called it well-crafted and praised the detailed faculty interaction for continuous improvement of the assessment framework. Many found the case studies on TCS, Tata Power and IHCL very insightful. The biggest takeaways for all the participants were: Thorough understanding of the TBEM framework, processes, assessments, scoring, etc. Experiential learning about real life situations Overall understanding of how business needs to function to imbibe excellence Networking opportunity with colleagues from other Tata organisations Effective ways of embedding business excellence in daily functioning Key Takeaways 8
