Data Science and Analytics-Enabled Graduate Competency Map Webinar November 9, BHEF
Agenda BHEF s National Data Science and Analytics (DSA) Strategy The Case for the DSA-Enabled Graduate Release of the DSA-Enabled Competency Map Facilitated Discussion: Operationalizing the Competency Map Ongoing Engagement and Feedback Presenters Debbie Hughes Senior Director Higher Education and Workforce Isabel Cárdenas-Navia Director Emerging Workforce 2016 BHEF 2
About the Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF) BHEF is a membership organization of CEOs, college and university presidents, and other leaders who form strategic partnerships to create diverse, high-skilled talent through innovative undergraduate pathways. BHEF members work together to: BHEF Value Create undergraduate programs to increase baccalaureate attainment, Improve alignment between higher education and talent development, and Prepare diverse, highly-skilled graduates ready to meet industry demand. BHEF members gain value from: Opportunities to form purposeful peer relationships between business or academic counterparts, Access to BHEF s expertise and regional work, and Insight on in-demand high skill trends, collaboration best practices, and case studies. Build Partnerships Strengthen Talent Identify Insights 2016 BHEF 3
How We Do It BHEF helps its academic and business members assess regional workforce needs, identify curriculum gaps, and co-design pathways, which means more successful career outcomes. Workforce Market and Skills Analysis Strategic Partnership Process Business-Led Ideal Candidate Profile Academic Skills Mapping and Gap Analysis Selection of Academic Credential for Development Integration of High Impact Practices and Experiential Learning Development and Feedback on Curriculum and Courses Roll-out of New Program with Continued Engagement Changed Company Hiring Practices 2016 BHEF 4
BHEF s DSA Strategy: Talent Development Models DSA as a Method of Inquiry Integrated into current courses across disciplines Faculty empowered to embed DSA in courses, use DSA in research, and ask new set of questions through DSA DSA as a Core Requirement Offered as quantitative sciences course to all first or second year students regardless of major Two course sequence: employer-engaged foundations course leading to applied research experience (ecure) DSA as New Credentials and Pathways Development of new industry-engaged credentials including majors, minors, concentrations, and certificates Connection of DSA competencies to domain knowledge Credential that industry can recognize and hire against Employer Engagement Articulation of needs across sectors and disciplines Input and validation of competency maps and curriculum Provide research questions and data sets Create a robust talent pipeline aligned to industry needs Strengthen higher education partnerships Engage human resources to align hiring practices to workforce needs and new education offerings 2016 BHEF 5
BHEF s DSA Strategy BHEF aggregates best practices, designs talent development models, and facilitates partnerships between industry and higher education concerning undergraduate DSA. Core Activities Events: workshops and roundtables (including leadership and affinity groups) Knowledge Capture: data calls, surveys, and creation and validation of content and collateral Faculty Workshops: incumbent and pre-service Resource Dissemination: document and develop resources and collateral National Convenings: host national convenings and speaking engagements Resources and IP Nationally-recognized competency maps Compendium of current DSA programs Cutting edge research leading to publication on workforce trends and education requirements New industry validated course modules and curriculum Resources designed for institutions, companies, and faculty to implement best practices 2016 BHEF 6
Demand for a DSA-Enabled Workforce BHEF is well-positioned to lead and shape DSA education and workforce development and build a community of leaders. According to an analysis of DSA jobs in the U.S. done by Burning Glass Technologies and sponsored by BHEF and IBM, there were more than 2.3 million listings for DSA jobs in 2015 Interdisciplinary nature of DSA means that many of these positions require DSA-enabled graduates to fill them Higher education has struggled to produce DSA-enabled graduates because most higher education departments are siloed and DSA is highly interdisciplinary Professional organizations have not addressed the DSAenabled workforce because it does not neatly fit in with any single discipline or profession A student graduating from a postsecondary institution enabled in DSA has the individual and team skills necessary to identify appropriate data and request, consume, capture, and synthesize data and information to develop and communicate data-driven insights that drive value. BHEF has the expertise to be the hub for DSA business-higher education collaborations and capacity-building resources BHEF 7
Developing the DSA-Enabled Competency Map Supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, BHEF facilitated an iterative process among higher education institutions, businesses, government agencies, and cultural organizations to develop a competency map. Convene stakeholders in NYC to identify DSA competencies Work with faculty SMEs in DSA to fully develop competencies 2X Convene stakeholders in NYC to refine DSA competencies Verify competencies with additional stakeholders Release competency map 2016 BHEF 8
Building Blocks for DSA-Enabled Graduate l Academic competencies developed and validated by BHEF-led group of ~50 SMEs from higher education and business BHEF 9
