1 JOB DESCRIPTION Post Inspector Grade Grade 111 Location The majority of these posts will be based in Dublin. There is one post available in Sligo. If assigned to a chemical role you may be based in either Dublin or Cork. A panel of successful candidates will be established for the filling of vacancies. Nature of Employment Duties and Responsibilities may include Permanent fulltime positions subject to satisfactory completion of probation period. The role of an inspector can cover a range of activities including, but not limited to, the following: Giving advice, guidance and support to employers, employees and businesses Inspecting workplaces and assessing compliance with occupational safety, health and chemicals legislation Taking enforcement action for serious breaches of legislation or standards Investigating work related incidents, often involving fatal and non-fatal injuries Preparing investigation and prosecution reports Maintaining a full and accurate record of inspection activity Representing the Authority at meetings with stakeholders and representative bodies as well as in public forums such as in court or at inquests Assessing scientific and technical reports and land use planning applications Preparing technical reports and position papers on various administrative and legislative issues (national and European) 1

2 Developing and implementing legislation, guidance and codes of practice Representing the Authority at European and International technical and policy committees Working as part of a team and with other regulatory agencies and government departments Delivering presentations on health and safety topics as required Essential Entry Requirements Applicants must have, on or before the closing date: Honours Degree (minimum Level 8 on the NFQ) in a science, engineering or occupational safety and health discipline and Two years practical experience working in industry or consultancy in a science, engineering or occupational safety and health role and Full driving licence that permits you to drive in Ireland Desirable Requirements Work experience relating to occupational or chemical safety and health A recognised qualification at Diploma level or higher in occupational safety and health For COMAH positions a recognised qualification at Diploma level or higher in planning, environmental information systems or risk modelling Skills Required Communication/Confidence/Personal Effectiveness Demonstrates effective communication style appropriate to audience and situation Ability to get a message across orally and in writing as well as listen effectively to others Creates a positive impact and conveys confidence, credibility, objectivity and impartiality to others Ability to represent the Authority effectively with key stakeholders Demonstrates strong report writing and presentation skills Ability to work independently and effectively while adhering to strict timelines and procedures Teamwork Ability to work effectively and co-operatively with others Establishes and maintains good working and 2

4 Technical Knowledge & Expertise Ability to apply technical knowledge and experience to health and safety and chemical safety principles Demonstrates a good understanding of the key technical issues Draw on best practice and innovations in devising solutions Is competent in using a range of electronic information technologies Salary 1. For persons paying Class A rate of PRSI contributions. The scale is from 30,376 to 59,656 and additionally to 61,681 and 63,701 after 3 years and 6 years satisfactory service on the maximum of the scale 2. For persons paying Class D rate of PRSI contributions. The scale is from 32,045 to 56,757 and additionally 58,686 and 60,604 after 3 years and 6 years satisfactory service on the maximum of the scale. Note: different pay and conditions may apply if, immediately prior to appointment, the successful candidate is already a serving civil or public servant. The rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with government pay policy. Annual Leave Training and development Selection Procedure 25 days per annum increasing to 29 days after 5 years service and 30 days after 10 years service, exclusive of the usual public holidays. You will be supported by your manager and colleagues to understand your role and to develop and enhance your skills as part of our continuing professional development programme. You will receive appropriate training on joining and if you do not hold an acceptable Health and Safety qualification, you will be required to achieve it within 2 years of taking up employment. Candidates will be shortlisted for interview. In addition the selection methods may include any exercises or tests including psychometric tests as deemed appropriate by the Authority. 4
