5 The Professional Managers Programme The Professional Managers Programme is a formal structure of qualifications that ranges from level 2 team leaders (first promotion) to L7 senior managers, and caters for level 3 supervisors, level 4 and 5 middle managers and level 6 senior managers in between. The strength of PMP is that it offers a starting point for all levels of leadership in your organisation and clear progression routes for future development. If you want to know who in your organisation is operating at which level, call us for a guide. What do the levels mean? The level of a qualification is a measure of its degree of difficulty. In leadership terms, the starting point is level 2 and focuses on good people and task management skills. Level 3 is supervisory and includes wider responsibilities, such as customers, equipment, budgets, larger teams etc, while levels 4 and 5 are for middle management and seek to develop new ways of thinking and operating. Levels 6 and 7 challenge you to look at yourself, your operations, your strategies and tactics, with a view to continuous improvement. Each ILM qualification is a recognised and respected achievement in itself and completely standalone. However, they are also nested qualifications which, like Russian dolls, fit inside each other. An Award sits inside a Certificate, which sits inside a Diploma, meaning once you complete your Award you only need to top up to gain a Certificate and top up again to a Diploma. There is no need to start over each time.
