We re proud to say that UK blood cancer research leads the world, thanks to the money we ve been able to invest because of our supporters and fundraising. But we still have so much more to do: blood cancer is the 5 th most common cancer and sadly it is the 3 rd biggest cancer killer in the UK claiming more lives than either breast or prostate cancer. 3 JOB DESCRIPTION AND PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title HR Manager Location London Contract Type Permanent Contract Length Salary Range Starting at 33,494 and paying up to 39,384 (dependent on experience) CONTEXT Bloodwise has a long and proud history of funding world leading research into blood cancer and of providing great information and support to those with blood cancer diagnoses, their family and friends. We have a great reputation amongst our many researchers, supporters and advocates, and with new advances on the horizon it is a great time to be part of this lifechanging work. Having been steered through a period of transition by our esteemed Interim CEO we have recently welcomed our dynamic new permanent CEO and moved into a new phase. As an organisation we are not afraid to explore the challenges we face and so this role will need someone who finds that prospect exciting and they should - because with these challenges come great opportunities! The HR and L&D Team has established a positive and influential relationship with the organisation and we now need to build on this; reviewing and developing our support and tools to ensure they best meet the evolving needs of the organisation. The projects on our agenda at the moment include; An organisational cultural review Integration of individual and organisational performance management and development into business planning Management development Developing an organisational planned approach to L&D Engagement and recognition and reviewing Improving our own processes, systems and tools. For the role of HR Manager we need someone who will bring knowledge and experience of what good HR support looks like, has ideas and energy to contribute and the initiative and professional confidence to take the lead in driving these forward. To be successful in this role you will need the flexibility to understand principles but work with customers to apply these pragmatically. You will need to have excellent relationship building skills in order to quickly build an understanding of operational activity and context, as well as the HR professionalism and experience to contribute to building really responsive and embedded HR support. This is a varied and interesting generalist HR role with lots of opportunities to develop HR project experience initially with a review of our own frameworks. There will be some employee relations work and a lead on our recruitment both in terms of supporting individual exercises and developing longer terms strategies in line with business planning. This role is also the alternate for payroll processing and, with an increasing remit for the development of management information and analysis, as well as contract management, it will need strong numeracy skills and exceptional attention to detail. Of course there is the routine transactional and administrative work that we all undertake. MAIN PURPOSE The main purpose of this role is firstly to develop, continuously improve and manage a framework of high quality professional HR systems, processes and tools which are business
4 assured and user-friendly. Secondly it will provide advice, support and capability building to managers on all aspects of people management and development helping to underpin the best possible employment relationship. As part of these to lead on HR projects, ensuring user and business assurance, driving them through to completion. KEY RELATIONSHIPS Reports to Head of HR and L&D Line management responsibilities Key relationships MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Supervisory support to HR Officer with the possibility to manage in the future. To develop an in depth knowledge of the work, challenges and opportunities of the different parts of the organisation and build relationships based on trust and understanding. 2. Using risk based and business partnering approaches, provide guidance, coaching and support to managers on all aspects of people management but in particular on recruitment and performance management. 3. Develop, continuously improve and manage a framework of high quality professional HR systems, processes and tools for people management which are business assured and user-friendly 4. Manage agreed projects in the HR business delivery cycle including the performance management process. 5. Provide workshops, presentations and team-talks on people management approaches and processes. Resourcing 1. Working with the Head of HR & L&D to support areas of the business making structural changes to ensure related role design and recruitment activity is effectively conducted. 2. Provide tailored advice on role review and design, campaign planning, recruitment and selection to ensure best possible resourcing outcomes. 3. Supported by the HR Officer, provide day-to-day recruitment exercise management including candidate engagement/communications, systems administration and support to managers. 4. Conduct pay bench-marking and reviews. 5. Manage a preferred supplier list and recruitment management information. 6. Lead on the development of recruitment strategy that takes advantage of innovative resourcing options, in line with business planning Projects 1. Play a lead role in developing the use of HR & L&D management information and analysis in decision making. This will include working closely with Finance on the staff tracker and management of the annual staff survey. 2. Coordinate the contribution of the work-streams that will be created to take forward themes from the culture review and staff survey. 3. Other projects as required.
5 Administration 1. Draft contracts of service and for services. 2. Coordinate the effective contract management of HR suppliers (including the EAP, Payroll bureau services, employment law advice) and support reviews and tender exercises. 3. Be the alternate for payroll processing. PERSON SPECIFICATION Skills knowledge and experience Essential 1 Substantial broad HR generalist experience including experience of working effectively at a similar level in a comparable operating context 2 Demonstrable experience of driving and delivering initiatives to improve HR support and service, ensuring buy-in and sustainability. 3 Experience of advising and coaching managers on the full range of people management issues and using risk and business partnership approaches to build management confidence, accountability and capability. 4 Excellent communications skills both in writing and verbally including presentations and workshops. The ability to both influence and negotiate effectively with managers and staff. Attention to detail in communications. 5 Experience of writing reports, proposals, policy, procedures and supporting tools. 6 High levels of numeracy including the ability to use excel spreadsheets (including formulas, high volumes of data, charts and graphs). Attention to detail in numeracy. 7 Experience of supporting the delivery of projects to support HR and/or organisation plans. 8 Great team working skills including the ability to identify opportunities to engage and collaborate with colleagues. 9 The professional experience to be work flexibly and be comfortable with ambiguity.
