RESOURCES Batten Resume Templates Hoos Career Guide Check your mailbox! Also available through MyUCS at Writing Resumes Handout Walk-In Hours at UCS and Batten

SOCIAL MEDIA Google your name to see what comes up Create a LinkedIn account Use a Professional Photo Photo Booth at the Fall Job & Internship Fair Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Make your profile private to limit how much the public can see without your permission Clean up profile employers might ask you for access Why?? A way to assess judgment, character, and protect organization s image

CONDUCTING RESEARCH Review the list of all the companies attending the program and select 5 7 to focus on REMEMBER THAT DIFFERENT COMPANIES WILL BE PRESENT EACH DAY Learn about each organization s major products and/or services, their primary markets, their mission statement and the qualifications they are seeking in their position descriptions Prepare questions about information that is not readily available on the website. (Examples- the organization s culture or the alumni/recruiters personal experiences) Use technology to your advantage. If a company catches your eye that you haven t previously considered, use your phone to Google them before going to the booth.

FALL JOB & INTERNSHIP FAIR CSM.SYMPLICITY.COM/EVENTS/STUDENTS.PHP?CF=FJIF13 You can search what employers will be there each day

RESUMES Some employers are not allowed to take your resume due to OFCCP Guidelines, but you can use this as a jumping off point in your conversation For the employers you most want to impress, take several targeted resumes, cover letters, and/or academic summary sheets Don t be discouraged when you are asked to apply online! Mention your career fair interaction in your cover letter and know that recruiters really do actively search for candidates they meet with after events

Employer Ratings Most Important Candidate Qualities/Skills Skill/Quality Ability to verbally communicate with persons inside and outside the organization Weighted average rating* 4.63 Ability to work in a team structure 4.60 Ability to make decisions and solve problems 4.51 Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work 4.46 Ability to obtain and process information 4.43 Ability to analyze quantitative data 4.30 Technical knowledge related to the job 3.99 Proficiency with computer software programs 3.95 Ability to create and/or edit written reports 3.56 Ability to sell or influence others 3.55 *5-point scale, where 1=Not important; 2=Not very important; 3=Somewhat important; 4=Very important; and 5=Extremely important Source: Job Outlook 2013, National Association of Colleges and Employers

MAKING THE MOST OF THE EVENT Professional Dress Action Plan arrive early! Firm handshake 30-Second Commercials Business Cards

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU Change of Clothes? You ll want to dress in business professional and wear comfortable shoes Something to take notes on- Make sure to jot down names of contacts, job titles, or solid points from the conversation for the follow up Print Copies of Resumes Consider bringing a bag if you believe you will be receiving a lot of materials from employers.

USE YOUR TIME WISELY As you approach each firm representative, use a firm handshake and begin by presenting a 30- to 45-second personal introduction highlighting your academic and career interests. Use your time efficiently to gain confidence, start with a few employers who interest you but who are not among your top choices. When you are at the top of your game focused, articulate, high energy--approach your top choices. Ask employers for their business cards, and be sure to jot down key notes from each conversation (use the backs of the cards if you like). Exchanges will last a few minutes up to ten minutes if the line is not too long and there is a lot to talk about

TIPS FROM EMPLOYERS Be able to talk naturally about your resume, don t act like you re in an interview Do not be too concerned about your first 3-5 seconds. Be confident and enthusiastic. Be patient- Do not act distracted while talking to recruiters Remember that you re trying to meet people. It s not about getting every word out about yourself. It s about getting to know people and making a friendly impression and not feel the need to talk about your entire college career in the two minutes you have.

YOUR 30 SECOND PITCH If you have a genuine interest in the company, begin the conversation with that Also include- your name, year, a bit about why you re interested in that sort of career Other talking points What you re involved in on Grounds What you know about the organization and questions you have Your background- This will help employers find the best opportunity that would fit your interests and background

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT BE ASKED What projects are you working on outside of your schoolwork? What do you know about their program? What activities are you involved in on grounds? Why did you chose those? What are you passionate about?

FOLLOWING UP & MAINTAINING CONTACT Thank You Notes LinkedIn Connection Requests Prepare Cover Letters Contact Alumni Apply on Time!

FOLLOW-UP FORMALITY LinkedIn- Personalizing the message is a great way to keep continued contact - Keep it short and sweet but clear enough to remind the person of who you are and what you talked about When- Within a few days so your interaction is still fresh in their mind
